BRICK-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 323,909, dated August 11, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VALFRID BURKMAN, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, anda citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brick-Machines, of which the following is a full description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2, an enlarged detail central section through the bolt or look. Fig. 3 is a plan; Fig. 4., a detailed plan of the table and molds; Fig. 5, a detail central vertical section.
This invention relatesto that class of brickmachines in which are employed a horizontal mold wheel or table and plungers or dies op erating from above and below to press the clay brought under and above said plungers by the rotation of the mold-wheel. In machines of the above type toggle-levers have hitherto been employed for operating the plungers or dies, or else levers acted upon by camsurfaces have been the instrumentalities for operating the plungers. Such devices have not given entire satisfaction,because the pressure exerted by the dies is liable to be uncertain and variable, and for this reason I have devised the present machine, in which the dies or plungers are operated gradually with uniformityand precision, and other advantages are also obtained.
The invention will first be fully described, and then set forth in the claims.
That which I claim to be new will be set forth in the claims.
In the drawings, A represents a metal web, which extends up from the bed of the machine.
B is a shaft, the upper bearing for which is attached to the web A. The lower bearingis supported from the main frame, as indicated in the drawings.
0 is a bevel gear-wheel on the top of the shaft B, and D is a bevel gearwheel on the shaft E.
F is a loose pulley.
G H are fixed pulleys on the shaft E.
I is a broad gear-wheel on the shaft B,which engages with the gear-wheel J, which is mounted upon the upper end of the screw K, which rotates in a screw-threaded collar, a, preferably made of brass, and having aflange, I), upon its lower end, which enters a recess, 0, in the web or support A.
d is a cap, which is bolted to the web A, holding the collar a in place.
L is a plunger, with which the lower end of v the screw K is connected in any well-known manner. On the lower end of the plunger is a head, 6, fitting the mold with which it is to 6 be used. I
L is located in a socket, M, in which it moves up and down. As shown, the part of L which moves in M is square. On the lower end of the shaft B is another broad gear-wheel, I, which engages with the wheel J, which is secured to a screw, K, which screw is connected with and operates the plunger L. The screw runs in a collar similar to a, and L moves in a socket similar to M.
N is a rotating table centrally supported on a pin, f, extending upward from a post or support, 0.
P P are two boxes or molds secured to the top of the table N, in which there are holes somewhat smaller than the interior of the boxes, as shown in Fig.5, over and around which holes the boxes are placed. In the box P there is a movable die or bottom, 9, the upper side of which isformed to correspond with the ornament which is designed to appearup- 011 the face of the brick. This piece 9 extends down into the opening in the table, as shown in Fig. 5.
g is a piece similar to 9, located in the box 85 P. The parts LL are inline with each other, and the molds are so arranged upon the table that they can be brought into line with L L. Upon each end of the table there is an upward projection, 71, circular in form, as shown in Fig. 4.
i is a spring bolt or latch, supported near the upper end of a standard, R, the inner end of which bolt can enter a hole in the flange h at either end of the table.
j is a guide bolted to the top of the standard R and extending over the end'of the table.
K is a support standing out at right angles from the standard R, having recesses within it in which is pivoted a small cog-wheel, Z, 100
upon the outer end of the shaft 12 of which is secured a lever or. (See Fig. 3.)
S is a bar having a rack upon one side,with which the eog-wheel Z engages. This bar S is supported in guides,one of which is in the part It, and upon its upper end is a head a, arranged to engage with the under side of the parts or g when they are in proper position.
In Fig. 3 I have shown a mold divided into two parts, designed for making two small bricks, instead of one large one. WVhen such a mold is used each part must be provided with a die similar to g, and the lifter which forces the pressed brick out from the mold must be arranged to act upon the several dies. The parts I J K and some other parts are located below the ground line, because otherwise the table would be at too great a distance above the ground line for convenience.
The bed of the machine can be bolted to timbers, or the machine can be placed upon brick-work or masonry; but it should be well secured in place.
The operation is as follows: The molds are to be filled with the clay which is to be pressed into brick; then, the machinery being in motion, the plungers L L will move, the one down, the other up, simultaneously, and they are to be arranged so that 0 will enter the mold just before L comes in contact with the die in the bottom of the mold. The pressure upon the clay by the rotation of the screws K K will be very great, L moving downward and L moving upward at the same time. \Vhen sufiicient pressure has been given, the ma chine is to be reversed by shifting the belts, and then the plungers L L will be returned to the position shown in Fig. 1. WVhile this is being done, the table is held in proper position by the lock orlatch 6. When thislatch is drawn out, the table can be rotated half way around, bringing the other mold, which is to be filled with clay, in proper position to be operated by the plungers L L, and while the machinery is moving the operator, by the use of thelever m, can raise the bar S, with its head a, bringingit in contact with the die in the bottom of the mold, forcing it upward until the brick in the mold is lifted to its upper surface, when the brick can be removed, and the bar S and head or returned to the position shown in Fig. 5, the mold being again fill-ed with clay, ready for the next movement.
The machine can be stopped and started and reversed by shifting the belts by means of devices in common use.
The table may be provided with a greater number of molds than shown,being arranged so that the several molds will be brought, one after another, in line with the plungers L L.
As shown, the bolt or latehz' must be withdrawn by hand to release the table; but when the opposite end comes around to the bolt h, being circular in form, it will come in contact with the end of the bolt and force it back until the opening in h gets to the proper po' sition, when the bolt will be forced into such opening.
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a brick-machine, the combination of the vertical shaft B, having long spur-wheels I I, the screw spindles K K, provided with pinions J J, and the plungers L L, with the frame A and mold adapted to be brought in line with the plungers, substantially as described.
2. In a brick-machine, the combination, with the frame A, and upper and lower plungers, L L, operated by screws and pinions, substantially as described,with a rotary horizontal mold frame or wheel, 1 P, having movable bottoms, and the lilting-bar S n for raising said movable bottom, substantially as described.
