To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD F. BUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vestborough, in the county of Atchison and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to straddle-row cultivators of the class in which an arch connection between two plow-beams is used; and the novelty consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, and in their peculiar adaptation to desired results, as will be more fully hereinafter set forth, and specifically pointed out in the claims.

The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of' this specification, and in which- Figure I is a side view. Fig.' 2 is a plan view. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View, and Fig. 4. is a detail perspective ofthe elevis, and Fig. 5 is a detail View of theadjusting-lever.

I provide a straddle-row cultivator having an arch, in the horizontal arms of which are supported adj ustabl y the clevises of the plows. These clevises may readily be adjusted in or out and up or down, as occasion may require. I provide runners made of a single piece of metal, supported in the horizontal arms of the arch, and attached to the bolts which secure the plow-clevises to the arch on a line with the respective beams, and to these runners I attach the draft. I provide convenient means for elevating the plows out of operation at will, as in case of transporting the cultivator from one field to another.

Referring to the drawings for specific description and reference, A designates the arch, having horizontal arms da? a3 projecting there from in opposite directions, as show-n. These arms have each a series of register-holes, c, into which the draft-bolt is secured. This draft-bolt b serves to secure adjustably, bctween the horizontal arms of the arch, a plowclevis, as B, which clevis oscillates horizontally on the bolt b, and is loosely pivoted to the plow-beam B by a horizontal bolt, b', which gives to the plow a desired vertical play. The plows are of any ordinary and approved kind and construction,

G designates the runners. They are formed of a single piece of metal, bent to form runner-bearing c, curved front c', horizontal arm c2, brace c, and horizontal arm 0*, with flange ci, which is bolted to the curved portion c by a coclceye, G, which forms the draft attachment. he arm cAl operates between the archarms and c, and the arm c2 between the arch-arms c and ai, being secured therein by the draft-bolt. A sleeve, D, operates upon cach draft-bolt loosely, and a set-screw, d, serves to secure said sleeve upon lthe bolt at any point, so as to adjust the plow-beam at will. rIhe forward end of each plow-beam is provided with a stout metal band, E, which gives a tirm bearing to the pivot-bolt b', and is provided with ears e, between which is pivoted a rod, F, carrying a shoe, f. This shoerod F folds up closely under each beam, and may be depressed by the proper manipulation ot' a lever, G, pivoted to the beam and carrying loosely a sleeve, g, which embraces the rod F between its shoe and pivotal point. When the rod F is depressed. the shoe rides along the surface of the ground, and the plows are held ont of operation by reason of the Sleeve g having been brought under the pivot of the lever G on the beam.

I attach importance to the construction of these devices for throwing the plows o ut of action to the construction of the arch, the

runners, and to their adaptation for service in relation to each other.

l/Vhat I claim as new is- I. In a cultivator, the combination, with the arch A, constructed as shown, of the adjusting-sleeves D, loosely secured to the rods b, and provided with the thumb-screws d, the runners G, formed of a single piece of metal, compressing the bearing c, curved portion c', brace c3, horizontal arms c2 ci, one above the other, the latter provided with the vertical flange adapted to be secured to the front portion of the runner, and the former bent rearwardly parallel with the portion 0*, and perforated to 'receive the bolt b, by which said runner is pivoted to the arch, as shown and described, and for the purposes specified.

2. The combination, with the cultivator and runners, constructed as shown and described, of the arch A, constructed of three straps of IOO metal secured to one another, bent downwardly and then laterally into horizontal arms a a2 a, to receive the horizontal portions c2 c" of the runners, and having the perforations as shown, and provided with the coupling rods or pins 7;, each having the sliding sleeve provided with the thumb-screws, as shown and described.
