VESSEL FIRE-EXTINGUISHING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 32,389, dated May 21, 1861.
To all whomtt may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES L. STUART, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and Improved Apparat-us for the Extinguishment of Fires on Shipboard, which I terni the Hydraulic Safety Machinery; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and correct description thereof, reference being had tothe accom panying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side view, showing outA side of vessel. The natureof my invention consists in the construction and operation of a new and novel apparatus to be usedA in connection with the means of propulsion for the eX- tinguishment of lires on shipboard.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention I will speak of the construction and operation of the saine.
In connection `with my improved safety apparatus I employ (l) a new and novel means of propulsion; (2) a new and novel means for the discharge of water, in the case of a serious leak; (3) a new and novel mode of steering.
N N show two slides of iron, inclosed in the frame G and working in the same, the frame G being grooved as at O, Fig. 7, for this purpose. These slides N N are grooved at their bottom edge and are provided with rubber-packing to prevent the water from entering the main pipe A, when the slides N N are depressed or closed. `These slides R R show two tubular masts provided i with flanges S S, to secure them to the mast pedestals lV V resting uponthe tube A. These pedestals IV W contain each two valves as at X X', opening upward for the admission of water into the tubular masts R R, said valves X X being closed by depressing the rods Y and Y, whileby elevating these rods Y and Y the valves are opened and the water allowed to enter the tubular masts R R.
The masts R R may be provided at the bottom with stop-cocks to allow the water to escape therefrom, into the hold of the vessel, whence it may be pumped out, the rotary pump H being provided with stop-cocks p p for this purpose.
T T show pipes connected with the tubular masts R, R, and provided with hydrants t, to which may be attached hose, (V) while by means of the stop-cocks u, u', u2, ug, water may be shut off from either one side or the other of the vessel. Similar slides to those shown at N N are placed in the bows of the vessel and may be arranged and operated in the same manner or in an equivalent way. Y
Operation: In case of fire, the hose is attached to any of the hydrants (t) desired. If the ship be propelling bows first, the rod Y is raised the valves as at open by the pressure of theA water below and the water rushes up the tubularmast R, from the fact that the branch tubes B B are smaller aft than forward. In case the quantity of water thus supplied be not suthcient, it may be increased by depressing the slides N N previously described. The water thus forced into the tubular mast R passes through the pipes T T to the hydrants t, and is thrown upon the fire by means of hose V as previously described. After the lire has been extinguished, the rod Y is depressed, thereby closing the valves as at X, the stop-cock at the bottom of the mast R is opened and the water flows from the mast pedestal IV into the hold, whence it is pumped out as previously stated. In case the vessel be propelling stern first, the rod Y is raised, slides similar to N N are depressed, thus introducing the water into the tubular mast R and the operation just described is gone through with.
It will be observed that each of the tubular masts is provided with a throttle valve a2, which, in case of lire occurring in the rigging or in the vicinity of the masts, may be opened and allow the water to be forced out of the mast head and when desired the valves a2 may be opened and the water be v elevated to the mast head as a means of testing the strength of the tube A.
In Fig. 11, the apparatus for the extinguishment of lire on shipboard, is shown used in connection with the present mode of propelling, in which case I employ the rectangular tube A, the rotary pump H, the slides N2 N3 placed on each side of the pump H, .the throttle valves a4 a? opening communication between the tube A and the tubes B3 B3 ofy the tire department; also the valves 10 and 11 placed as shown in Fig. 2. Levers marked 4:0 are used to operate the throttle valves at a4, and 41 shows a wheel on the side wheel or propeller shaft 4Q gearing into the shaft L and operating the rotary pump the shaft L and operating the rotary pump H.
Operation: In case of a lire and the driving wheel I moving in the direction of the arrow, the slide N3 and the throttle valve a4 are opened, the latter by means of the lever 40. The water rushes through the tube A as shown by the arrows and up the tube B3, and thence passes through the pipes T T to the hydrants t, to which is attached hose V and is thrown upon the fire as previously described. If the wheel I be running in the opposite direction, the slide N2 and throttle valve a* are opened and the water ascends the tube B3 and the operation previously described is repeated. IVhen the lire has been extinguished and the hose v having been removed, air is admitted through the opened Y hydrants t, the throttle valve a4 and the slide N3 being opened, the water is discharged by means of the tube A through an aperture in the side or bottom of the vessel.
I do not of course desire in the employment of my invention to limit myself to the eXact arrangement of parts as shown.
Having thus described my invention what I claim therein as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the rotary pump H, slides N N tubular masts R and R, valves X and X and pipes T and T provided with hydrants t, when combined and operated as shown and for the purpose set forth.
