(No Model.)
G. W. EVANS.
MILK OR CREAM CAN.
No. 323,864. Patented Aug. 4, 1885.
NITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
GEORGE W. EVANS, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
MILK OR CREAM CAN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,864, dated August 4, 1885.
Application filed May 13, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk or Cream Cans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a side view of one of my improved milk-cans, showing the same locked and sealed and ready for transportation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the top of the can with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the annular brace-ring detached. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the opposite side of the said ring. Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the cover of the can in an inverted position. Fig. 6 is a vertical sectional view of the can with the cover in position and locked. Figs. 7 and 8 are detail views of the sections through the joint, as shown in Fig. 6, but on an enlarged scale; and Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the rim F.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to milk or cream cans; and it consists in certain improvements on the device for which Letters Patent of the United States No. 274,745 were granted to myself on the 27th day of March, 1883. This device consisted of a milk-can having a peculiarly-constructed hollow tubular neck, with elbow-slots and a lock-spring, in combination with a flanged cover and a separate and detachable lock-collar. My present improvement consists in constructing the cover and lock-collar in a single piece, thereby rendering the manipulation more convenient.
The invention also consists in the arrcngementwithin the tubular neck of an annular ring or brace which is provided with L-shaped reoesses registering with the elbow-slots for the reception of the locking-catches, a recess for the reception of the lockin g-spring, and aflange extending outwardly below the latter recess, in order to prevent access to and tampering with the spring.
With these ends in view, the invention consists in the improved construction, arrangement, and combination of parts which will he hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A desig-.
hates the body of the milk-can, B the breast of the same, and O the neck. The latter is provided at its upper edge with an annular cast-metal ring or collar, 1), the upper edge of which has an inwardly-extending annular flange, E, against which the upper edge of the neck 0 of the can abuts. The said ring or collar, which is inclosed and covered by a sheet-metal rim, F, is provided on diametrically opposite sides with L-shaped recesses H H, registering with the elbow-slots I I, formed in the rim E.
The rim F, ring or collar D, and neck 0 are secured together by means of rivets or other suitable fastening devices. oesses His provided with a lateral extension, J, in which is secured a spring, K, extending under the elbow-slot I and provided with a downturned lip, L, the object of which will be presently set forth. The said ring or collar is also provided at its lower edge, below the recess H J, with an outwardlyextending flange, M.
N is the cover, which is provided with the handle 0, collar P, fitting in the neck of the can, a flange, Q, resting upon and extending over the upper edge of the neck of the canand its surrounding collar, and a rim or collar, R, extending downwardly from the said flange One of the re- 1 and adapted to fit around the rim F of the neck of the can. The rim or collar It is provided on its inner side with lugs S S, adapted to engage the elbowslots I I and recesses H H, and near one of the said lugs the said collar is provided with a vertical slot, T..
In operai ion ,the coveris placed upon the neck of the can, as shown in Fig.6 of the drawings, in such a manner as to cause the lugs S S to engage the elbow-slots I I and recesses H H, after which the cover is turned to one side, thereby causing one of the lugs S S to engage the lock-spring K. A seal may then be placed over the opening or slot T, as described in my patent to which reference has been made above, thereby preventing access to the spring, which must be depressed by a key or suitable instru' went, in order to enable the cover to be re moved. The flange M of the cast-metal ring or collar 1), which extends outwardly below the recess 11 J of the latter, prevents tampering with the lock-spring from the bottom of said recess by inserting some instrument between thelower edges of the collarD and rim F.
The operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. The construction is simple and inexpensive. There are no loose or extra parts which would be liable to get lost. The eoveris stifi'ened and braced by the collar R, which forms a part thereof, and the neck of the can is also greatly strengthened by the ring or collar D.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Lettters Patent of the United States- The combination of the milk-can, the castmetal collar surrounding the neck of the same and having L-shaped recesses on diametricallyopposite sides, a lock-springreceptacle extending laterally from one of said recesses, and a bottom flange extending outwardly below the latter recess, the surrounding rim having elbow slots, the lock-spring arranged as herein GEORGE W. EVANS.
