Description
March 1966 w. M. OLIVET ETAL 3,237,939
BABY WALKING AID Filed Oct. 15, 1962 IN VEN TORS WILLIAM M.OLWET BY CHARLE WINZHIIM United States Patent 3,237,939 BABY WALKING AID William M. Olivet, 49 Daisy Ave., and Charles Winzheim, 43 Daisy Ave., both of Floral Park, N .Y. Filed Oct. 15, 1962, Ser. No. 230,547 3 Claims. (Cl. 272-70) This invention relates to baby walking aids and more particularly to such means comprising a holding bar which is adapted to be held by an adult, the bar being provided with hand holds for a baby.
The main object of the present invention is to provide means for assisting a baby to learn how to walk. At this stage of the babys development, it is generally necessary to provide a steady hand so that he can balance himself as he takes his first steps. This is generally done by an adult leaning over and holding the babys hands to give him balance and some support. This leaning posture is rather uncomfortable and awkard for the adult and may be somewhat dangerous if the support provided by the adult is not steady and sure.
The present invention solves this difiiculty by providing an elongated member having a handle in its upper center portion for the adult to hold and having curved portions at either end terminating in holding grips for the baby. Means are also provided for securing a harness to the elongated member for providing additional safety support to the baby.
Accordingly a principal object of the invention is to provide new and improved baby walking aid means.
Another object of the invention is to provide new and improved baby walking aid comprising an elongated member having handles for an adult, and for both hands of the baby.
Another object of the invention is to provide new and improved baby walking aid means comprising an elongated member having a centrally located handle for an adult and having curved horns at either end terminating in handles for the baby, and also having means to connect and support the babys harness.
Another object of the invention is to provide new and improved baby walking aid means having a single handle for an adult whereby it is easy to steer the direction of the babys walking.
Another object of the invention is to provide new and improved baby walking aid means having an adjustable height handle for an adult.
These and other objects of the invention will be apparent from the following specification and drawings of which:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view illustrating an embodiment of the invention and the use thereof.
FIGURE 2 is a modification of the invention.
FIGURE 3 is a detail view of the adjustable handle means for the adult and,
FIGURES 4 and 5 are side views of other embodiments of the invention.
Referring to the figures, FIGURE 1 illustrates the use of an embodiment of the invention. The invention comprises an elongated member 1 having a handle 2 for an adult and having curved ends 3 and 4 which terminate 3,237,939 Patented Mar. 1, i966 in handles 5 and 6 which are adapted to be held by the baby. Slots 7 and 8 are provided for securing the babys harness 10 to the member 1.
The spacing between the hands of the U-shaped portions of the member 1 is chosen to accommodate the babys head so that the baby may grip the handles 5 and 6 conveniently.
The ends of the handles 5 and 6 are preferably soft and rounded and all sharp edges eliminated so that if the baby stumbles, he cannot be injured by them.
The member I may be made out of any suitable material for instance it, may be molded out of a single piece of plastic or it may be made out of a light-weight metal. The handle 2 for the adult is centrally located so that it is easy for the adult to steer the babys direction.
FIGURE 2 shows an enlarged view of the member 1 illustrating finger grips 11 on the handle 2 and finger grips 5 and 6' on the handles 5 and 6. If the member 1 is made of a molded plastic construction, it preferably has centerweb portions 12 and 13 to provide added strength.
FIGURE 3 shows a detail view of a modification wherein the handle 2 has a shank 14 which extends into a slot 15 in the member I so that the handle may be adjusted in height by means of the tightening screw or pin 16.
FIGURE 4 shows a simplified modification of the invention wherein the center hand grip I7 is not raised above the member 1' but is molded into the center portion of the member 1'. The babys handles 18 and 19 may be plain or may have finger grips as shown in FIG- URE 2. The slots 7 and 8 are similar to those described above. Alternatively other fastening means may be used for securing the harness such as clips or buckles.
FIGURE 5 shows another modification or" the invention which may be a one-piece molded plastic member 20 having a U-shaped handle 21. In this modification clips 22 and 23 are provided for securing the babys harness.
We claim:
1. Baby walking aid means comprising;
an elongated member having a U-shaped curve at each end to provide hand holds for a walking baby, said ends being spaced sufliciently to accommodate the babys head,
and means for an adult to support and control said member with one hand, said last means being located at the center of said elongated member and adapted to accommodate the fingers of a hand of the adult.
2. Apparatus as in claim ll having means to adjust the height of said control means relative to said elongated member.
3. Apparatus as in claim 2 having means to connect a harness to said elongated member.
