Description

Feb. 22, 1966 P. WHITE, SR 3,236,572
SPLIT COLLAR FOR PAPER CORES Filed Dec. 19, 1963 1%; -57 JaZzP M z 5 United States Patent 3,236,572 SPLIT COLLAR FOR PAPER CORES Philip White, Sr., 390 Maple St., Winchendon, Mass. Filed Dec. 19, 1963, Ser. No. 331,746 4 Claims. (Cl. 308-236) This invention relates to new and improved holding means for the cores of paper rolls. The problem is that the hubs or collars used to connect the paper rolls to steel shafts which are used for holding the rolls while they are being wound or unwound and the like, are ordinarily provided with fastening means which pass through the hub or collar directly onto the shaft and engaging the shaft surface disrupt the same and raise the material of the shaft causing burrs. After use of this nature, the hub or collar gets out of true and the paper core does not run true on the shaft or it vibrates, causing irregular operation of winding and rewinding, and flat spots and soft spots on the roll.
The present invention provides a new and improved split hub or collar which has a flexible portion occasioned by a longitudinal slot therein, together with a fastener which extends in a tangential direction, connecting the ends of the split collar together without engaging the shaft, so that the shaft is never marked up, and when the paper roll is attached to the improved hub or collar, it will run true on the shaft and will not vibrate regardless of use.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a device of the class described including an interchangeable longitudinal key which can be used to actually connect the core of the paper roll to the collar or the hub.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a view in elevation illustrating the invention;
FIG. 2 is an end view thereof, looking in the direction of arrow 2 in FIG. 1; and
FIG. 3 is a sectional view illustrating a modification of the invention.
The shaft which is to be connected to the core of the paper roll is indicated at 10. This shaft is completely conventional. The collar or hub is itself indicated generally by the reference numeral 12 and it will be seen that it comprises two integral cylindrical parts, one of which indicated at 14 is relatively small in diameter and the other part 16 being of larger diameter and actually being more or less in the form of a head or the like but still cylindrical and in axial extension of part 14. It is to be understood however that the two parts 14 and 16 are integral.
A portion of the part 16 which is indicated at 18 is made to be flexible by providing a slot 20 extending longitudinally of the portion 16 and extending completely through the same in a radial direction, and by also providing a slot 22 which does not extend all the way through part 16 but does extend longitudinally to the terminal portion thereof at 24. Slot 22 intersects an arouate slot 26 (see FIG. 1), so that the portion 18 is substantially completely severed from the device except for the web 28 in FIG. 2. Thus it is seen that the portion 18 is capable of bending at the web 28 so as to cause it to act as a gripping means about the shaft 10. The arcuate slot 26 divides part 18 from part 14.
Any kind of fastener such as the bolt which is indi cated at 30 may be utilized to connect the part 18 with the adjacent portion 32 of the part 16 (see FIG. 2), and by turning the bolt 30, the hub is caused to grip the shaft without however marring it in any way. It can be just as easily released when desired.
The dotted lines 34 in FIG. 1 indicate the edge of the paper roll so that it is seen that the bolt 30 is at all times exposed and can be actuated whether the roll is in position or not.
The extra diameter provided by the part 16 of the device also provides a material for a longitudinal slot in the surface thereof at 36. This slot may go from end to end of portion 16 or it may terminate as at 38 in FIG. 1, but in any event it provides accommodation for the key 40 held therein by any kind of suitable fasteners 42, 42. This provides an exposed portion of the key to the left of the portion 16 in FIG. 1 which can penetrate the paper roll to some extent in order to clutch it mechanically with respect to the hub.
As shown in FIG. 2 there could be provided if desired an interengaging longitudinal keyway and key arrangement at 44 which of course would prevent any relative rotation between the hub and the shaft. The clamping mechanism described is still needed to prevent axial motion.
As shown in FIG. 3 the portion of the hub at 58 is similar to that at 12. The portion at 48 is the same as that at 18 including the clamp member 30, etc. which is indicated in FIG. 3 at 50. In this case the key and keyway is shown at 52 and is similar to that at 44, the shaft being indicated at 54.
In this construction, a ball bearing as indicated at 56 could be applied to the portion 58 in any way, and this provides an extremely useful ball bearing assembly for any purpose desired, and at the same time the key 52 provides for easy removal and replacement of the ball bearing and hub assembly with respect to the shaft. If desired, a keyway 46 could be used with a key on the bearing for ease of assembly, instead of shrinking the inner race of the bearing onto the portion 58 and disassembly. A removable collar 60 can be used to hold the bearing in place.
It will be seen therefore that the objects of the invention are carried out and that a new and improved hub or collar is provided for the cores of paper rolls for securing the same with respect to a shaft whether for winding, unwinding, or rew-inding, and that the hub or collar is quickly and easily applied and detached with respect to the shaft without marring the same in any way.
Having thus described my invention and the advantages thereof, I do not wish to be limited to the details herein disclosed, otherwise than as set forth in the claims, but what I claim is:
1. The combination with a shaft for mounting a paper roll, of a hub for securing the roll with respect to the shaft, wherein said hub comprises a hollow cylindrical member having a portion of lesser diameter and a portion of larger diameter both concentric, said portion of larger diameter having a longitudinal slot extending completely therethrough to a point intercepting the portion of smaller diameter of the hub, said portion of larger diameter having a second longitudinal slot angularly spaced from the first slot, the second slot terminating short of the interior of the portion of larger diameter, providing a web, and forming a movable portion on the portion of larger diameter located between the two slots, said movable portion between the two slots being otherwise separate from both the larger portion and the smaller portion except for said web, and means for moving said movable portion relative to the remainder of the portion of larger diameter to in effect relatively constrict the same for removable attachment with respect to the shaft which extends through both the portion of smaller diameter and the portion of larger diameter of the hub.
2. The combination recited in claim 1 including an ar-cuate slot extending completely through the portion of smaller diameter adjacent the portion of larger diameter and extending between the two slots, thus providing that the movable portion of the portion of larger diameter is substantially separate.
3. The combination recited in claim 1 including a third longitudinal slot in the portion of large-r diameter, said slot having a terminal portion contiguous to the portion of smaller diameter thereof and having the bottom of said slot coextensive with the surface of the latter, a key in said third slot, and means securing it in position therein, said key having a portion extending outwardly from the slot onto the surface of the portion of smaller diameter.
4. A bearing assembly structure comprising a shaft, a hub on the shaft, means keying the hub to the shaft, said hub including a hollow cylindrical member having a portion of lesser diameter and an integral portion of larger diameter concentric with the shaft and both portions receiving the shaft therein, the portion of larger diameter having a longitudinal slot extending completely therethrough to a point intercepting the portion of smaller diameter on the hub, said portion of larger diameter having a second longitudinal slot angularly spaced from the first slot, the second slot terminating short of the interior of the portion of larger diameter, providing a semi-flexible web, and forming a movable portion on the portion of larger diameter located between the two slots, said movable portion between the two slots being otherwise separate from both the larger portion and the smaller portion except for said web, and means for moving said movable portion relative to the remainder of the portion of larger diameter to in effect relatively constrict the same for securernent with respect to the shaft, and an annular bearing having an inner race mounted on the periphery of the portion of smaller diameter.
