WE/waff UNITED STATES PATENT miren OLE FLAGSTAD, OF HAMAR, NORWAY.
VlSE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,655, dated August 4, 1885.
Application lcd May 6, 1385. (No model.)
ifo @ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, OLE FLassrnn, a subject of the King of Norway, and residing in the town of Hamai', Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vises; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in vises, the object of the same being to provide a visein which the jaws may be rapidly opened, f
and closed, and one in which the closing of the jaws will be automatic. A further object is to provide a vise of the above character which will be simple and economical in construction and durable and efficient in use; and with these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of constructionand combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims. In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a view of the vise in side elevation, and Figs. 2 and 3 are modifications of the details.
A represents the fixed or stationary jaw of -the vise, and B the movable jaw thereof, which is pivotally secured to the frame, as shown at G. The lower end of the jaw B is provided with the extension D, against which impinges one end of the spring E, the opposite end of which is secured to the inner face of the jaw A, whereby the jaws are pressed together without the aid of the screw. The jaws are connected with each other by means of the joke F, which embraces them, the 'forward end of the said yoke being provided with the teeth G. The opposite end of the said yoke is' enlarged and provided with afemale screwthreadcd opening, in which is inserted the clampscrew H, which is adapted to impinge against the jaw B, and thereby force the said jaw against the stationary jaw A. The enlarged end of the yoke is provided with the depending arm I, against which is adapted to impinge the spring J, which is secu red to the outside of the jaw B, the object of which is to prevent the yoke from sagging when the screw II is released, and also to force the yoke toward the rear of the vise.
To the stationary jaw A is pivotally secured the pawl K by means of the pin or bolt L. The spring M is also secured to the jaw A, and bears against the lower side of the pawl, and forces the same upward in contact with the teeth G on the yoke, whereby the saine is held in locked adjustment. To one side of the yoke is loosely secured the bar N by means of the pins O, which register with the obliquely-inclined slots I?, vformed in the bar. One end of the bar is provided with the clip or bracket Q, in which is adapted to lit one end ofthe lever It,\vliich is pivoted to the jaw B, and provided with the opeiating-handle S. The jaw A is also provided with the guide T, which is pivoted above the yoke, and by means of which the vertical tendency of the toothed end of the yoke is governed.
From the above description it will be observed that the spring E will cause the jaws to automatically close together, and that the pawl Ii, being forced into engagement with the teeth G, will hold the jaws in such locked position, the force of which can be gradually increased by means of the clamp-screw II.
Vhen desired to discngage the pawl K from engagement with the yoke, the same is conveiiiently accomplished by canting the lever It to one side, which will cause the bar Nte move outward and descend upon the pin II with sufficient weight to force the pawl from engagement with the teeth G, at which time the jaws can be separated without interference.
Iwould have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction shown and described, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as properly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention-as, for instance, the yoke could be provided with a projection, and the lever It could be pivoted directly thereto.
To accomplish a positive and secure engagement of the teeth Gon the yoke when the vise is opened very wide and the yoke is in consequence at an oblique angle, the arrangement of parts shown in the modification Figs. 2 and 8 becomes desirable, the upper end, 7;, of the pawl Ii in this instance being formed as shown and turning upon the pin t, which has a sufficient guide partly by its own portion IOO taking hold between the two parts of the yoke and partly by the two pins U,lying against the rail G.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with stationary and movable jaws and a spring for holding the movable jaw in contact with the stationary [o jaw, of a yoke encircling the jaws and pro! otally secured to the stationary jaw and en gaging the teeth on the yoke, a spring secured to the movable jaw and engaging the depending arm, and a screw passing through the yoke and engaging the movable jaw, substantially as set forth.
3. The c01nbination,with the stationary and movable jaws and a spring for holding the jaws in closed adjustment, of the yoke provided with teeth, the pivoted pawl constructed to engage said teeth, the bar having inclined slots therein, pins passing through the slots and entering the yoke, the lever for moving the bar, and the screw passing through the yoke and engaging the movable jaw, substantially as set forth. j
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
