Thisinvention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lap sticks for a high speed picker and in particular reference to the textile arts.
It is well known to provide a lapstick which consists of a rod with a plate-shaped disk disposed transversely of the longitudinal axis of the rod at one end thereof with the disk being of relatively large diameter with respect to the diameter of the rod.
For automatic control of the operation of the apparatus, it is necessary that the lap stick rods be stored for quick change or insertion and the storing of such lap stick rods was extremely diflicult as the disk fixed to the rods prevented close association of the rods for the occupation of a minimum of space, resulting in relatively large or Wide spaces between lap stick rods.
To overcome the foregoing disadvantages of lap stick rods, the lap stick rod of this invention is formed in such a manner that the transversely extending part or element provided on the lap stick rod has radially extending fingers instead of a disk member with the fingers spaced from one another at an angle of less than 180 and the transversely extending element is formed of at least three fingers that extend from the periphery of the lap stick rod in radial direction. By the foregoing formation of a lap stick rod there is obtained the close association of the stick rods when stored together, there always being a free space between the fingers of the transverse element which makes it possible that the rods of adjacent lap sticks may lie very closely to one another. The arrangement of at least three fingers at the same angular distance from one another has the advantage that at least one finger finds a support at a backing member. Also, the design according to the invention enables storing of the lap sticks in the smallest possible space.
With the a-bove and other objects in view that will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel for-m, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and claimed.

In the form of invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 2,
the reference numeral 1 designates a lap stick rod with a transverse element designated in general by the reference character 2 at the rear end of the rod and the transverse element comprises fingers 3 and 4 extending through transverse openings in fairly close relationship in the rod 1, and these openings are so arranged that the fingers 3 and 4 that extend from the periphery of the rod 1 have the fingers of each set displaced from one another for approximately In the form of invention shown in FIGS. 3 and 4, the lap stick 6 has a reduced neck 6 at the rear-end thereof for the mounting of the hub portion 6 of the transverse element designated in general by the reference character 7. This transverse element 7 is anchored in position by the swaged end 6 on the reduced end 6 of the rod 6 outwardly of the transverse element as illustrated. This transverse element is shaped like a cross with four fingers 7 and may be formed from a disk with cutout segments to produce the fingers 7*.
As illustrated in FIG. 5, the transverse element on the lap stick rod has three fingers 9 equidistantly spaced so that regardless of the rotative position of the rod one of the fingers will always be positioned between a pair of backing members 10, 10 (FIG. 6). As illustrated, the fingers are arranged with the same angular distance from one another and at an angle less than As illustrated in FIGS. 6 and 7, the lap stick rods may be stored in a comparatively small space for delivery to proper operating conditions. Upon storing, the ends of the rods 6 as well as the ends of the rods 1 provided with the transverse elements at the rear ends of the rods, lie in close relationship to one another and the rods are illustrated as extending through a slot 18 defined by the backing member 10 that is for-med of two parts for the support thereof. The right-hand ends of the lap stick 6 as viewed in FIGS. 6 and 9 are similarly supported, while both the right and left ends of the lap sticks 6 as viewed in FIG. 9 are supported in a conventional manner upon support elements 19, one of which support elements is illustrated and both support elements 19 can be moved to allow the lower lap stick to drop.
The lap stick is mainly used in connection with a beater machine, especially a high speed picker constructed by the firm Hergeth KG., Diil-men, Westphalia, In this Hergeth picker, a layer of fibers is coiled into a lap 11 on a hub tube 12. The tube 12 is provided at one end with a handle 13 and a collar 14. The lap stick 1 is inserted into the open side of tmbe 12. During the growth of lap 11 which may consist of natural or synthetic fibers, as for example cotton or artificial cotton, the hub composed of parts 12 and 1 is guided along vertical guidances. After completion of lap 11, the same is rolled by lap rollers 16 on a lap pan 17 which may be displaced in transverse direction of the machine. During this movement, the lap resting on the displaceab le lap pan is removed from tube 12, the collar 14 of which engages with a vertical guidance and is retained thereby. The lap stick remains into the lap.
Thereupon, the lap may be seized by means of the lap stick and may be carried to any desired place. The lap stick I removed from the lap may be inserted by hand at the upper end of magazine 15. By the special design of the rear end of the lap sticks, the same may be stored a) in close relationship to one another as is clearly shown in FIGS. 6, 7 and 9. Upon return movement of lap pan 17, the lowermost laip stick is extracted from the mag-azin'e and is inserted into hub tube 12.
While there are herein shown and described the preferred embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that minor changes may be made therein, such as will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. The combination of a storage device and a plurality of lap sticks so constructed and arranged as to provide support for a maximum number of lap sticks in a minimum volume of space comprising a two-part backing member, a slot defined by opposing edge portions of said two-part backing member, a plurality of lap sticks positioned in said slot, each of said lap sticks including a rod having forward and rear end portions positioned at opposite sides of said backing member, each of said lap sticks having a transversely extending element at the respective rear end portions thereof, said element including at least a pair of radially extending fingers with an angle of less than 180 therebetween, the rear end portions of each of adjacent ones of said lap sticks being supported by a portion of one of said lap sticks adjacent said rear end portion thereof, and the element of at least one of said lap sticks being axially spaced from one surface of said backing member a greater distance than an element of another of said lap sticks.
2. The combination of a storage device and a plurality of lap sticks so constructed and arranged as to provide support for a maximum number of lap sticks in a minimum volume of space comprising a two-part backing member, a slot defined by opposing edge portions of said two-part backing member, a plurality of lap sticks positioned in said slot, each of said lap sticks including a rod having forward and rear end portions positioned at opposite sides of said backing member, each of said lap sticks having a transversely extending element at the respective rear end portions thereof, said element including at least three radially extending fingers joined to each other at a juncture portion defining an angle of less than 180 thercbetween, the rear end portion of an uppermost one of said lap sticks being supported by a juncture portion of a next lower one of said lap sticks, and the ele- ,ment of at least one of said lap sticks being spaced further from one surface of said backing member a greater distance than an element of a next lower one of said lap sticks.
3. The combination of a storage device and a plurality of lap sticks so constructed and arranged as to provide support for a maximum number of lap sticks in a minimum volume of space comprising a two-part backing member, a slot defined by opposing edge portions of said two-part backing member, .a plurality of lap sticks positioned in said slot, each of said lap sticks including a rod having forward and rear end portions positioned at opposite sides of said backing member, each of said lap sticks having a transversely extending element at the respective rear end portions thereof, each of said elements including radially extending fingers with an angle of less than between the fingers, said fingers of each element being at least four in number arranged in two pairs With the fingers of each pair being in axial alignment at opposite sides of each associated rod, the rear end portion of each of adjacent ones of said lap sticks being supported by a portion of one of said lap sticks adjacent said rear end portion thereof, and the elements of each of each of said lap sticks being axially spaced a different distance from one surface of said backing member than an element of another of said lap sticks.
4. The combination as defined in claim 3 wherein each rod of said lap sticks has longitudinally spaced openings at the rear end portion thereof extending diametrically of the rod, and said fingers being secured in said openings.
5. The combination of a storage device and a plurality of lap sticks so constructed and arranged as to provide support for a maximum number of the lap sticks in a minim-um volume of space comprising a two part backing member, a slot defined by opposing edge portions of said two-part backing member opening upwardly through an upper edge portion of said member, a plurality of laip sticks positioned in said slot, each of said lap sticks including a rod having forward and rear end portions positioned at opposite sides of said backing member, each of said lap stick-s having a transversely extending element at the respective rear end portions thereof, each element including at least a pair of radially extending fingers joined by a juncture portion at an angle of less than 180, the rear endportion of an uppermost one of said lap sticks being supported by a juncture portion of a next lower one of said lap sticks, and the element of at least one of the lap sticks being spaced further from one surface of said backing member a greater distance than an element of a next lower one of said lap sticks.

Claims (1)

1. THE COMBINATION OF A STORAGE DEVICE AND A PLURALITY OF LAP STICKS SO CONSTRUCTED AND ARRANGED AS TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR A MAXIMUM NUMBER OF LAP STICKS IN A MINIMUM VOLUME OF SPACE COMPRISING A TWO-PART BACKING MEMBER; A SLOT DEFINED BY OPPOSING EDGE PORTIONS OF SAID TWO-PART BACKING MEMBER, A PLURALITY OF LAP STICKS POSITIONED IN SAID SLOT, EACH OF SAID LAP STICKS INCLUDING A ROD HAVING FORWARD AND REAR END PORTIONS POSITIONED AT OPPOSITE SIDES OF SAID BACKING MEMBER, EACH OF SAID LAP STICKS HAVING A TRANSVERSELY EXTENDING ELEMENT AT THE RESPECTIVE REAR END PORTIONS THEREOF, SAID ELEMENT INCLUDING AT LEAST A PAIR OF RADIALLY EXTENDING FINGERS WITH AN ANGLE OF LESS THAN 180* THEREBETWEEN, THE REAR END PORTIONS OF EACH OF ADJACENT ONES OF SAID LAP STICKS BEING SUPPRTED BY A PORTION OF ONE OF SAID LAP STICKS ADJACENT SAID REAR END PORTION THEREOF, AND THE ELEMENT OF AT LEAST ONE OF SAID LAP STICKS BEING AXIALLY SPACED FROM ONE SURFACE OF SAID BACKING MEMBER A GREATER DISTANCE THAN AN ELEMENT OF ANOTHER OF SAID LAP STICKS.
