This application is a continuation-impart applicationof my earlier'filed application Serial No. 263,570 now Patent No. 3,202,269, filed March 7, 1 963, and 'directed to the container'itse-lf.
'In the marketing of these commodities it has been *the generally adopted practice to wind a predetermined length into a roll and to pin the outer end. In this relatively exposed state the rollsare dife'red {for sale. More-particularlyin the caseof India tape "considerable soiling oi theouter end portion and "the edges of the tape frequently occurs. Furthermore, in the dispensing of desired-lengths from the roll care' is needed iifits' handling.
It is a principal'object of the inventiqn to provide a method for forming a container which representsvanimprovement in the form'of presentation for sale ensued textiletapes and ribbons.
According to an embodiment of the invention "there is provided a container for a textiletapefiribbonor the like A commodity comprising-a ilatbasefiarid a coverin-g' member of transparent sheet material. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the container consists of a flat cardboard base 3 coated on one face with a heat sensitive adhesive 4. A transparent sheet 5 of cellulose acetate or other suitable synthetic material is pre-formed, by the conventional vacuum forming process or other means, with a central recess 6 on one face surrounded by a fiat marginal portion 12. The central recess 6 may be approximately cylindrical but preferably has a frusto-conical wall 7 connecting to a circular apex. A slot is formed in the sheet 5 such that a portion 8 of the slot is cut in the wall 7 and a portion 9 of the slot United States Patent extends through the adjacent marginal edge 12'ot the sheet.

The foregoing description refers "in the main to one embodiment but it should be understood that modificaitions thereto are feasible Within the scope of the invention. For instance, the base may be elongated as in FIG; 2 and contain a multiplicity of rolls. "In such an event a single strip of transparent "sheet covering 5A may be employed and be preformed to have-a required 'nurnber of recesses 6A for the rolls of tape 'to be accommod'ated. The strip of containers may then 'be supported from a peg 14 for display and when required the lowermost container 15 may be cut from the strip'for sale.
-It should be appreciated that by forming the slot 8 with a portion 9thereof 'inthe flat portion has described and illustrated 'in' the' drawing, "threading of the rolls 10 into their respective recesses 6 is greatly facilitated. In FIGURE 3 thereis shown an operation in which the slot'porti'ons' 8 and 9 are formed in a plurality of covering members 5 ma single operation.
'As' shown, a plurality of sheet covering members 5 are internested to form a'stack. As many as fifty sheet members'S 'may constitute a stack. A cutting memberZO', with a sharp'ed-ge '21, is supported for reciprocal movement such that in one stroke of the member 29 there are formed in the sheet ineinbe'rsS, the slot portions 8 and 9. Thecutting member 20 is removed from the members 5 'in a retractive stroke, where'atterthe stack of internested sheet members, is replaced by a new stack in which the slots are to be formed.
Thus, the production of the slots in the sheet members 5 is greatly simplified by the concurrent forming of the portions 8 and 9 in a single operation on a plurality of sheets 5, as compared to the forming of the slot portion 8 all alone in the sheet members, one by one. Moreover, the slot portion 9 facilitates the insertion of the outer end 13 of the roll of material through the slot.
In the arrangement wherein a plurality of recesses are formed in a sheet member, as for example in FIG. 2, the formation of the slots will be the same as that described above With the exception that a plurailty of cutting members may be employed equal in number to the number of recesses in each sheet so that the slots in all the recesses are formed all at once. The plurality of cutting members may all be connected together for concurrent movement to form all the slots in a single operation.
Numerous modifications and variations of the method of forming the container will become apparent to those skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the attached claim-s.
What is claimed is:
1. A method of producing a plurality of containers for individual rolls of material comprising cutting to size plural fiat bases, coating one surface of each base with a heat sensitive adhesive, preforming in a plurality of flat sheets of material at least one recess and a flat portion bounding each recess, nesting said plurality of preformed sheets of material into a stack, cutting a single slot extending in the wall of each recess and in the bounding flat portion of the material in all of the sheets in a single operation, inserting a free end of each roll of material through a respective slot and applying heat and pressure to the bounding flat portion of each sheet of material and the respective fiat base to secure the same together with a roll of material in the recess and with the end of the roll of material extending through the slot.
2. A method of producing a covering sheet for a container which is adapted for accommodating a roll of material with a free end thereof projecting from the container, said method comprising: forming in a fiat covering sheet a central recess while leaving a fiat portion bounding the recess, stacking a plurality of sheets one atop the other with the central recesses internested, and cutting in a single operation in all of the sheets a slot extending partially in the wall of the recess and partially in the bounding fiat portion.
3. A method of forming a slot in a covering sheet of a container which is adapted for accommodating a roll of material with a free end thereof projecting from the slot, said method comprising forming the slot in the covering sheet prior to assembly in the container by cutting in a single operation in a covering sheet having a recess and a bounding flat portion a slot extending partially in the wall of the recess and partially in the bounding flat portion whereby a plurality of covering sheets may be internested in a stack and the slots formed in all the sheets in a single step.
4. A method of forming slots in a plurality of covering sheets which have central recesses and flat portions bounding the recesses, the method comprising internesting the covering sheets to form a stack and cutting slots in the sheets partially in the walls of the recesses and partially in the flat portions all in a single operation,

A method of forming slots in a plurality of covering sheets which have central recesses and flat portions bounding the recesses, the method comprising internesting the covering sheets to form a stack and passing a cutting tool through all the sheets to form in each sheet of the stack a slot partially extending in the wall of the recess and partially in the flat portion.
6. A method of producing containers with rolls of material, said method comprising: cutting to size fiat bases for the containers, coating one surface of the bases with a heat sensitive adhesive, pre-forming in each of a plurality of fiat sheets of material a recess and a fiat portion bounding the recess, stacking the sheets one atop the other with the recesses internested, cutting in all of the stacked sheets in a single operation slots which in each sheet extend partially in the wall of the recess and partially in the bounding flat portion, inserting in the slot in each sheet a free end of a roll of material and securing a base to each sheet of material by applying heat and pressure to the base and to the bounding flat portion of each sheet whereby a roll of material is accommodated in the recess and the free end of the material extends through the slot.
7. A method as claimed in claim 6 wherein the slots are cut in the sheets by a reciprocally supported cutting tool which in one stroke passes entirely through the stacked sheets and in the opposite stroke is withdrawn from the sheets.
8. A method as claimed in claim 6 wherein a plurality of recesses are formed in each sheet whereby a plurality of rolls may be accommodated in each container.
9. A method as claimed in claim 8 wherein slots are formed in each of the recesses in each sheet concurrently and the slots in all of the recesses in the stacked sheets are formed in a single operation.
10. A method as claimed in claim 6 wherein the recesses are formed as conical portions to facilitate internesting thereof.
11. A method of producing a container for a roll of material comprising the steps of cutting to size a flat base, coating one surface of the base with a heat sensitive adhesive, pre-forming in a flat sheet of material a recess and a flat portion bounding said recess, cutting all at once a slot extending partially in the wall of the recess and partially in the bounding fiat portion of the material simultaneously in a plurality of pre-formed sheets of material which are internested to form a stack, inserting a free end of the roll of material through the slot and applying heat and pressure to the bounding fiat portion of the sheet material to secure the flat base thereto with the roll of material in the recess and with the end of the material extending through the slot.
12. A method as claimed in claim 11 wherein the fiat sheet of material is transparent.

A METHOD OF PRODUCING A PLURALITY OF CONTAINERS FOR INDIVIDUAL ROLLS OF MATERIAL COMPRISING CUTTING TO SIZE PLURAL FLAT BASES, COATING ONE SURFACE OF EACH BASE WITH A HEAT SENSITIVE ADHESIVE, PERFORMING IN A PLURALITY OF FLAT SHEETS OF MATERIAL AT LEAST ONE RECESS AND A FLAT PORTION BOUNDING EACH RECESS, NESTING SAID PLURALITY OF PERFORMED SHEETS OF MATERIAL INTO A STACK, CUTTING A SINGLE SLOT EXTENDING IN THE WALL OF EACH RECES AND IN THE BOUNDING FLAT PORTION OF THE MATERIAL IN ALL OF THE SHEETS IN A SINGLE OPERATION, INSERTING A FREE END OF EACH ROLL OF MATERIAL THROUGH A RESPECTIVE SLOT AND APPLYING HEAT AND PRESSURE TO THE BOUNDING FLAT PORTION OF EACH SHEET OF MATERIAL AND THE RESPECTIVE FLAT BASE TO SECURE THE SAME TOGETHER WITH A ROLL OF MATERIAL IN THE RECESS AND WITH THE END OF THE ROLL OF MATERIAL EXTENDING THROUGH THE SLOT.
