ATTORNEY WITNESSES: I

\VILLIAM T. HOIVES, OF WHITE HEATH, ILLINOIS.
PAINTERS SCAFFOLD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 323,152, dated July 28, 1885.
Application filed May 29, 1885.
To mZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM T. HOWES, of White Heath, in the county of Piatt and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Painters Scaffold, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a new and improved painters scaffold, which is so constructed that the operator can easily and conveniently raise or lower himself or move to any place on the side of a house to which the device is attached.
The invention consists of a frame having a seat and provided with a pivoted pulley-block, of clamps, pulleys, and ropes, and oflevers attached to the pulley-block for fastening the ropes which hold the frame.
The invention also consists of various parts and details hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is afront elevation showing my improved painter s scaffold attached to a gableroofed house. Fig. 2is a side elevation of the frame and the pivoted pulley-block. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the pullcyblock. Fig. 4 is a vertical section of the same on the line a x of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a bottom View of the pulley-block.
The frame A is of suitable construction, and is provided with the seat B, the foot-rest O, the braces G, which serve as a ladder, and the hooks D, on which the operator can place his paint-buckets, &c.
' To the upper part of the frame Ais pivoted a block, E, having recesses E, in which are placed the four pulleys F F and F F.
To the under side of the pulley-block E is attached a plate, G, having recesses G, in which are placed the notched levers II, fulcrumed in the plate G, and through which re cesses G pass the lower ends of the ropes. The under side of the pulley-block E is also provided with hooks II, in which the levers II can be held in a horizontal position. To the outer edges of the pulley-block E are pivoted the clevises E, to each of which is attached one end of the ropes I and I, and in place desired.
(No model.)
the middle, on the top of the pulley-block E,
is pivoted a clevis, E to which is secured the pulley J.
The clamps K and Kare provided with the pulley-blocks I" and I attached pivotally to the same, and the clamps K K are united by a ring, K, to which is attached a p ulley-block, K. The said pulley-blocks I I'Zand K" carry each a pulley. One end of the rope L is attached to the pulley-block K and passes down and around the pulley J and up and over the pulleyin thepulley-block K, anddown through the recess G,between the pulleys F F, to the ground.
The ropes I and I, attached to the clevises E, pass each from there over to and around the pulley in the pulley-blocks I and I and back again, and over the pulleys F F, and thence down to the ground. The device is used and operated as follows: The clamps K are attached to the comb of the house to be painted, and the clamps K and K are secured to the eaves, one on eachside. The operator places himselfin the seat Band the ropes being attached, as before described, the operator is then enabled to raise or lower himself or move to any point on the side of the house to be painted bypulling on the re spective ropes I, I, or L. As soon as theoperator has reached the desired point he unfastens the lovers H,which, with their notched edges, tightly clamp the ropes I, I, and L in the recesses G of the plate G, andthcreby suspend the frame A and its attachments at the In case the operator cannot conveniently reach a desired spot from the seat B he can go up the braces O O and from there reach the desired point. In case the side of a house is to be painted, the clamps K and K are fastened to each end of the caves and the clamps K K midway between them to the eaves.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. In a painters scaffold, the frame A and the pivoted pulley-block E, in combination with the ropes I, I, and L. the pulley-blocks I I, and K, the clamps K, K, and K and the ring K, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a painters scaffold, the frame A, the pivoted pulley-block E, and the levers H, in combination with the ropes I, I, and L,.the pulley-block I 1 and K the clamps K, K, and K and the ring. K substantially as shown and described. I
3. In a painters scaffold, the frame A, the seat- B, the foot-rest O, the braces C, and the hooks D, in combination with the pivoted pulley-block E, having the recesses E, the pulleys F and F, the clevises E and E the plate G, having the recesses G, the levers H, and the hooks H, substantially as ihown and described.
4. In a painters scaffold, the frame A, the seat B, the foot-rest O, the braces O, the hooks D, the pivoted pulley-block E, having the recesses E, the pulleys]? F and FE', the clevises E" and E, the plate G, having the recesses G,
20 the levers H, and the hooks H, in combination with the ropes I, I, and L, the pulleyblocks 1, I and K, the pulley J, the clamps K, K, and K and the ring K all operating substantially as shown and described.
5. In a painters scaffold, the pulley-block E, having the recesses E, the pulleys F and F, the clevises E and E, the plate G, having the recesses G, the levers- H, and the hooks H, in combination with the ropes I, I, and L, the pulley-blocks I I", and K*, the pulley J, the clamps K, K, and K and the ring K substantially as shown and described.
6. In a painters scaffold, the pulley-block E, having the recesses E, the pulleys F and F, the clevises E and E, the plate G, having the recesses G, the levers H, and the hooks H, substantially as shown and described.
