IMPROVEMENT IN PLOws.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 32,311, dated May 14, 1861.

This invention is an improvement in oper- I ating turn-plowshares for very heavy or light plowing, wherein the plow is supported under a carriage and raised and depressed by the plowman while sitting on the carriage.
The invention consists in connecting and bracing the plow-body to a beam, which is suitably jointed to the front part of the axle-tree of the carriage, and which projects out a suitable distance in front of said axle-tree, said beam being connected near its front end by jointed straps to a lever which is arranged in a convenient position to be operated by the plowman, as will be hereinafter described, and also at its front end by a jointed arm and chains to a sliding cross-tree to which the team are attached, all as will be hereinafter fully explained.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents an axle-tree, carrying on its ends wheels B B, one of which, B', is somewhat smaller in diameter than the other, B, for the purpose of keeping the axle-tree nearly horizontal, while one of the wheels runs in the furrow and the other over the unplowed ground.
C is the drivers seat, which is mounted over axle A on springs C C', and situated near the large wheel B.
D is the draft-pole, which is securely bolted to the axle-tree A, as near to the hub of wheel B as possible without touching this hub. Draft-pole D projects out a suitable distance from the front side of axle-tree A, and h'as a cross-tree, (ban) D,attachedto it some distance in advance of the wheel B, in such a manner that this cross-treeD is allowed to slide back and forth on the pole D, and at the same time to work on a central pivot, a, the ends of which pass into longitudinal slots in plates b b', the- 'former of which is a guard for holding the tree D down on the pole D. The draft-pole D is securely braced at its rear end to the axle-tree A by a strap, C.
Below the draft-pole D is a beam, E, which is securely pivoted at its rear end to the axletree A, directly under the pole D, and which proceeds out from the aXle-tree beyond the wheel B. This beam being pivoted at one end, as before stated, its forward end can be moved up or down by a longitudinal lever, F, which is arranged on top of pole D, to which the front end of beam E is attached by two straps,
d d, which are jointed-at their ends to each side of the beam E, and also to the front end of lever F. Lever F has its fulcrum on post F', and its rear end or long arm can be fixed at any desiredpoint to the postF2, both of which,
post F and post F2, are secured to and proj ect up from the pole D alongside of the drivers seat C.
The plow-body G is constructed of a frame, e, to which the mold-board and share are securely bolted. This plow-body has no landside, but a iin or colter, k, is secured to the landside edge of the frame e, and projects up therefrom a suitable distance for making a vertical cut through the sod to facilitate the passage of the plow. The upper end of the frame e is bolted to the frontend of movable beam E, and with the two brace rods g gthe plow-body is securely fixed to this beam E in the relative position with wheel B shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. This wheel B, it will be seen, will follow in the furrow made by the plow, and the smaller wheel, B', will run-on the unplowed land, thus keeping the axle-tree in a horizontal position.

a short transverse bar, h, is pivoted, to the ends of which two chains, K K, are fastened. The other ends of chains K K are attached to hooks 'i i on the back part of the cross-tree, and on each side of the slotted guard-plate. These two chains K K can be shortened or lengthened at pleasure.
Now it will be seen that when the team is hitched to the cross-tree D', the chains K K being properly adjusted the draft of the team will be directly from the end of beam E, and
much of the strain on lever F occasioned by the downward tendency of the plow-body will loe removed. The lever will not therefore require niuchlabor on the part of the driver to operate it in` regulating the depth of the plow or in raising the plow entirely from the ground.
