(Cl. 312-308) The present invention relates in general to dishwashers and, more particularly, to an improved dish-supporting rack assembly and mounting means therefor.
The invention contemplates a dishwasher of the frontloading type, i.e., a dishwasher of the type wherein the tub is provided at the front thereof with a doorway adapted to be closed by a downwardly-and-forwardlyopening front door pivotable about a generally horizontal axis extending transversely of the tub adjacent the lower edge of the doorway. Such a dishwasher normally includes two dish-supporting baskets of open construction which are movable through the doorway in the fore-andaft direction between retracted and extended positions, being entirely within the tub in their retracted positions and being at least partially withdrawn from the tub in their extended positions.
A general object of the invention is to provide a dish rack assembly including a basket capable of full extension completely, or substantially completely, out of the tub for easy loading and unloading.
More particularly, an object of the invention is to provide a dish rack which includes a frame partially extensible through the doorway, and a basket carried by the frame and extensible forwardly relative thereto into a position completely, or substantially completely, out of the tub.
An important object of the invention is to provide a construction of the foregoing nature wherein the partiallyextensible frame is a rigid structure comprising a dishsupporting means of open construction which substantially spans the space between the sides of the tub and which substantially spans the space between the front and the back of the tub when the frame is in its retracted position, the basket being detachably connected to such frame.
With the foregoing construction, either the frame or the basket may be used to support dishes within the tub. The basket is preferably of such a construction as to render it suitable for containing relatively small articles. However, when the basket is removed, pots, pans, bowls, or other dishes, which are too large for any conventional dishwasher may be placed on its supporting frame.
This is an important feature of the invention since it r permits washing large articles which, heretofore, could not be handled by any household dishwasher.
Thus, the present invention, by providing a partiallyextensible dish-supporting frame which carries a forwardly-extensible detachable basket, achieves two important results, viz., it provides full forward extension of the hasket for easy loading and unloading, and it provides an alternate dish-supporting means capable of handling much larger dishes than possible previously.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a dish-rack mounting means, for supporting and guiding the aforementioned frame, which comprises only three rollers on each side of the tub. More particularly, an object is to provide a mounting means which includes two transversely spaced rails on the frame respectively supported and guided by two trinities of rollers on the respective sides of the tub, each trinity of rollers including two lower rollers spaced apart in the fore-and-aft direction and engageable with a lower surface of the corresponding rail, and a single upper roller located between and above the lower rollers and engageable with an upper surface of the corresponding rail.

Another object is to locate the two sets of rollers adjacent the front of the tub so that the supporting frame and the basket are cantilevered in both the retracted and the extended positions of the frame and the basket.
The supporting frame and the basket are cantilevered to a greater degree in their extended positions than in their retracted positions. Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to locate the upper rollers of the two sets rearwardly of points midway between the lower rollers thereof, thereby providing a more positive cantilever support for the frame and the basket in the extended positions thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide the frame with two transversely spaced, generally horizontal, foreand-aft tracks respectively engageable by two transversely spaced track follower means on the basket, the track follower means being slidable along the respective tracks in the fore-and-aft direction and each preferably including two hooks spaced apart in the fore-and-aft direction and engageable with upper and lower surfaces of the corresponding tracks to positively prevent tipping of the hasket relative to the frame even when the basket is fully extended relative to the frame and is loaded in an unbalanced manner.
Another object is to provide for disengagement of the basket from the frame, when it is desired to use the frame alone, by forming the tracks on the frame with discontinuities through which the corresponding hooks on the basket are displaceable to provide for detachment of the basket. Other objects of the invention are to provide interengageable stop means on the tub and the frame and on the frame and the basket for limiting forward movement of the frame relative to the tub and forward movement of the basket relative to the frame, respectively.
The present invention, by utilizing a rigid supporting frame for the basket, provides a rigid dish rack assembly which is extremely sturdy and which is quite stable even when the frame and the basket are fully extended and the basket is fully loaded, which is an important feature.
Another important feature is that since the supporting frame for the basket is a rigid structure, extreme rigidity for the basket itself is not necessary and, as a matter of fact, the basket may be relatively flexible for some purposes. In this connection, an object of the invention is to provide on the frame a plurality of points of support for the basket so that the basket is adequately supported even if it is not a rigid structure.
The foregoing objects, advantages, features and results of the invention, together with various other objects, advantages, features and results which will be evident to those skilled in the dishwasher art in the light of this disclosure, may be achieved with the exemplary embodiment of the invention described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2, the numeral 10 designates a dishwasher of the invention comprising a housing providing a tub 12 which is enclosed by a cabinet 14 in the particular construction illustrated. The dishwasher 10 is of the front-loading type, the tub 12 being provided at the front thereof with a doorway 16 adapted to be closed by a downwardly and forwardly opening front door 18. The dishwasher includes pivot meansZO, FIG. 1, mounting the door 18 for downward and forward opening movement about a generally horizontal axis extending transversely of the tub 12 adjacent the lower edge of the doorway 16.
The dishwasher 10 also includes upper and lower dish racks 22 and 24 which are movable forwardly from retracted positions within the tub 12 through the doorway 16 into extended positions above the door 18, when the door is in its open position. The present invention is embodied in the dish rack 22, which will be considered in more detail hereinafter.
The dishwasher 10 also includes various instrumentalities for washing, rinsing and drying dishes carried by the racks 22 and 24. Such instrumentalities are conventional in automatic household dishwashers so that it is unnecessary to describe them herein, other than to point out in a general way that the dishes carried by the racks 22 and 24 are washed and rinsed by water sprayed thereover by a water distributing means 26. The latter, in the particular construction illustrated, is shown as including a reaction-type spray head 28 located between the two racks 22 and 24 and adapted to spray wash and rinse water upwardly against dishes carried by the upper rack and downwardly over dishes carried by the upper rack and downwardly over dishes carried by the lower rack.
Turning to the dish rack 22, it comprises a two-part assembly the basic components of which are rigid dishsupporting shelf or frame 30 of open construction and a dish-supporting basket 32. of open construction detachably mounted on the frame. When the dish rack 22 is in its retracted position within the tube 12, the frame 30 and the basket 32 extend substantially from the back of the tub to the front thereof, and substantially span the space between the sides or side walls 34 of the tub. As will be described in detail hereinafter, the frame 31) is movable forwardly, when the door 18 is open, into an extended position wherein it projects forwardly through the doorway 16 a distance of the order of half the length of the frame, and the basket 32 is similarly movable forwardly, relative to the frame 30, a distance of the order of half the length of the basket. Thus, when the frame 30 and the basket 32 are in their extended positions relative to the tub 12 and the frame, respectively, the basket is completely, or substantially completely, withdrawn from the tub for maximum accessibility in loading and unloading, which is an important feature.
The frame 30 is a rigid structure comprising, in the embodiment illustrated, a U-shaped wire 36 of relatively heavy gauge having fore-and-aft arms 38 integrally interconnected by a transverse portion 40 extending across the frame adjacent the front thereof, as best shown in FIGS. 2 and 7. The arms 38 have transversely-outwardly- offset portions 42 and 44 to which are welded, or
otherwise secured, transversely spaced, fore-and-aft rails 46 by means of which the frame 30 issupported and guided by two guiding and supporting means 4% respectively mounted on the sides 34 of the tub 12 and described in more detail hereinafter. Extending across the frame 3tlat the rear thereof is another wire 50 which is welded,
or otherwise secured, to the rails 46 adjacent their rearward ends. The ends of the wire 50 project upwardly above the rails 46 to provide stops 52 engageable with the guiding and supporting means 48, as will be described, to limit forward movement of the frame 30 relative to the tub 12. It will be understood, however, that the stops 52 may take other forms.
The frame 30 further includes a dish-supporting means 54 of open construction. Such dish-supporting means may take various forms, having the form, in the particular construction illustrated, or a coarse-mesh wire grid welded, or otherwise secured, to the portion 40 of the wire 36 Cir and, to the wire 50. It will .be understood that, when the frame 30 is utilized as a dish-supporting structure, it is intended to be used with large dishes such as large pots, pans, bowls, and the like. Consequently, the grid 54 provides large openings, thereby minimizing the resistance to upward spraying of water against dishes in the basket 32 when the latter is in use. The wire 50 is located at a level above the wire portion 40, and the grid 54 is correspondingly upturned at the rear of the frame 30, to provide a stop flange 56 for preventing dishes from sliding off the rear edge of the frame.
The guiding and supporting means 48 are mounted on the sides 34 of the tub 12 adjacent the front of the tub and each includes three rollers engageable by the corresponding rail 46 on the frame 30. More particularly, each guiding an dsuporting means 48 includes two lower rollers 58 and 60 engageable by the lower surface of the corresponding rail 46, and an upper roller 62 engageable by the upper surface of the corresponding rail and located above the corresponding lower rollers. ,Still more particularly, the lower rollers 58 and 60 are spaced apart in the fore-and-aft direction, and the upper roller 62 is located intermediate the lower rollers, being located rearwardly of a point midway between the two lower rollers. In order to confine the frame 30 against any substantial lateral movement, at least the lower rollers 58 and 66 of each set are provided with circumferential grooves receiving the lower edges of the rails 46 therein.
As will be apparent from FIG. 3 of the drawings, when the frame 30 and the basket 32 are in their retracted positions within the tub 12, they are supported by the guiding and supporting means 48 in cantilever fashion, with a rearward overhang. More particularly, the support is provided by the rear lower rollers 60 and the upper rollers 62. On the other hand, when the frame 36 is displaced forwardly into its extended position, as shown, for example, in FIG. 4 of the drawings, the frame and the basket 32 are again supported in cantilever fashion, with a front overhang. In this case, the weight is supported by the front lower rollers 58 and the upper rollers 62. When the basket 32 is extended forwardly relative to the frame 30, as will be described hereinafter, the forward overhang is considerably greater than is the rearward overhang when the frame and the basket are both in their retract-ed positions within the tub 12. For this reason, the upper rollers 62 are located rearwardly of points midway between the lower rollers 58 and 66 to provide greater support for the forward overhang.
As best shown in FIG. 5 of the drawings, when the frame 30 is in its extended position, the stops 52 thereon engage the upper roll-ers 62. Thus, forward movement of the frame 36 beyond its extended position is prevented.
The basket 32, which may be of any suitable construction, is provided on or has connected to its bottom surface two transversely spaced, fore-and-aft members, preferably relatively heavy-gauge wires 64, which, as best shown in FIG. 7, rest on and are slidable forwardly and rearwardly along tracks constituted by the arms 38 of the U-shaped wire 36 of the frame 30. Thus, the wires 64 constitute track followers or track follower means movable along the tracks 38 in the fore-and-aft directions. The wires 64 are further supported by resting on and being slidable across the transverse portion 40 of the U-sha-ped wire 36.
More particularly, the wires 64 are provided adjacent their rearward ends with track following hook-s 66 extending under the tracks 38 and engageable with both the upper and lower surfaces thereof. The wires 64 are providedintermediate their ends with front hooks 68 which also extend under the tracks 38, FIGS. 7 and 9, and are engageable with both the upper and lower surfaces thereof.
With the foregoing construction, the wires 64 on the basket 32, including the hooks 66 and 68 thereon, are slidable back and forth along the tracks 38 and over the connecting wire portion 40. Forward movement of the basket 32 beyond its extended position relative to the frame 30, is prevented by engagement of the front hooks 68 with the transverse wire portion 40, as shown in FIG. 7 of the drawings, the hooks 68 and the wire portion 40 thus acting as interengageable stops on the frame 30 and the basket 32 for limiting forward movement of the basket relative to the frame. The basket 32, when extended forwardly relative to the frame 3'] in this manner, is prevented from tipping downwardly by "engagement of the rear hooks 66 with the lowersurfaces of the tracks 38.
The forward extension of the frame 30, which is limited by engagement of the'stops 52 with the upper, stop rollers 62, is of the order of half the length of the frame 30 and the basket 32. Similarly, the forward extension of the basket 32 relative to the frame 30, which is limited by engagement of the hooks 68 with the stop wire portion 40, is of the order of half the length of the frame and the basket. Thus, when both the frame 30 and the basket 32 are in their extended positions, the basket is complet'ely, or substantially completely, withdrawn from the tub 12 for ready accessibility and loading and unloading. When the basket 32 is in its fully extended position, the rearward end thereof occupies the position shown in phantom at 32 in FIG. 4 of the drawings.
Considering the manner in which the basket 32 may be detached from the frame 30 when it is desiredto use the frame alone as a dish-supporting structure, the laterallyoutwardly-otfset portions 44 of the tracks 38- provide the tracks with notch-like discontinuities through which the hooks 66 and 68 may be withdrawn upwardly. Considering the procedure to be followed in removing the basket 32, the frame 30 is first displaced forwardly into its fully extended position and the basket 32 is then placed in a position relative to the frame such that the front hooks 68 register with the discontinuities provided by the offset portions 44. Thereupon, the front hooks 68 may be "withdrawn upwardly out of engagement with the tracks 38. The basket 32, with its forward end elevated as shown in FIG. 5, is 'thenmoved forwardly until the rear hooks 66 are in aposition permitting upward withdrawal through the discontinuities provided by the offset portions 44 in the same manner. The basket 32 may be re-engaged with the frame 30 in a manner essentially the reverse of the foregoing, engagement and disengagement involving simple sequences of manual manipulations.
As hereinbefore outlined, the dish rack "22 may be used either with the basket 32 in place, or removed. With the basket 32 in place, full extension thereof is possible to simplify loading and unloading. With'only theframe 30 in use, it is still partially extensible'to facilitate placement thereon of large dishes, such as large pots, pans, bowls, and the like. The frame 30, when used without the basket 32, is capable of accepting articles'much larger than anything that can ibe plac ed in the 'basket 32, or in the lower basket 24. Thus, the present invention permits washing, in an automatic hous'ehold dishwasher, articles considerably larger than anything'prior appliances of this type are capable of accepting, which is an important feature of the invention. I
Another important feature 'is that the rigidity of the frame 30 provides a very sturdy and stable structure, even with the frame and the basket 32 intheir fully extended positions and with the basket heavily loaded. This rigidity of the frame 3tl provides a'r'nuch 'sturdierand'more stable structure than anything obtainable by usingseparate fullextension drawer-slide types of supporting structures on opposite sides of a basket. 7
Furthermore, since the frame 30 acts as the primary supporting structure for the basket 32, the basket itself need not be particularly rigid, and may even be quite flexible in some instances. In such a case, the necessary support for the basket can be provided by joining the two wires 64 adjacent their forward and rearward ends for the purpose of rigidifying the basket to the exent necessary.
Even with the particular structure shown, it isnot necessary for the "basket to be extremely rigid because of the rigidifying effect of the wires 64. Itwill be noted that the wires 64 engage the frame 30 at a plurality of points to provide adequate support for the basket 32 even though the basket itself is not necessarily an extremely rigid structure.
Although an exemplary embodiment of the invention has been disclosed herein for purposes of illustration, it will be understood that various changes, modifications and substitutions may be incorporatedtherein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the claims which follow.
What is claimed is:
1. In a dishwasher comprising'a tub having transversely spaced sides and a front andhaving at the front thereof a doorway for access to its'interior, the combination of:
(a) a dish rack including a rigid dish-supporting frame of open construction movable generally horizontally in the fore-and aft direction into and out of said tub through said doorway between retracted and extended positions;
(b) two guiding and supporting means respectively mounted on said sides of said tub adjacent the front thereof for supporting said frame and for guiding it between said retracted and extended positions;
(0) said frame including two transversely spaced, generally horizontal, fore-and-aft rails respectively engaging said guiding and supporting means and including a dish-supporting means of open construction between said rails;
(d) each of said guiding and supporting means including two lower rollers spaced apart in the fore-and aft direction, and including an upper roller above and rearwardly of a point midway betweensaid lower rollers thereof;
(e) each of said rails extending through the corresponding guiding and supporting means above said lower rollers thereof and below said upper roller thereof;
(f) said rails being engageable with said rollers of said guiding and supporting means, respectively, to support said frame in cantilever fashion in both its retracted and extended positions;
(g) said dish rack also including a dish-supporting basjket of open construction above and carried by said frame and movable generally horizontally relative thereto in the fore-and-aft direction between extended and retracted 'positions; and
(h) said basket being substantially completely withdrawn from said tub when both said basket and said frame are in their extended positions.
2. In a dishwasher comprising a tub having transversely spaced sides and a front and having at the front thereof a doorway for access to its interior, the combination of:
(a) a rigid dish-supporting frame of open construction movable generally horizontally in the fore-and-aft direction into and out of said tub through said doorway between retracted and extended positions;
(b) a dish-supporting basket of open construction above and carried by said frame and movable generally horizontally relative thereto in the fore-andaft direction between retracted and extended posi- 'tions; I A
(c) said basket being substantially completely A withdrawn from said tub when both said basket and said frame are in their extended positions; and
((1) said basket being removable from said frame so 'that either said frame or said basket may be used to supportdishe's within said tub.
3. In a dishwasher comprising a tub having transversely spaced sides'and a front and having at the front thereof a doorway for access to its interior, the combination'of:

(a) a rigid dish-supporting frame of open construction transversely spanning the space between said sides of said tub and movable generally horizontally in that either said frame or said basket may be used to support dishes within said tub.
4. In a dishwasher comprising a tub having transversely spaced sides and a front and having at the front thereof a doorway for access to its interior, the combination of:
(a) a rigid dish-supporting frame of open construction transversely spanning the space between said sides of said tub and movable generally horizontally in the respectively, in certain relative positions of said basket and said frame, so that said basket may be detached from said frame to provide for usingsaid frame alone to support dishes within said tub.
