Description

R. J. KORESKA Jan. 4, 1966 STEEL SHELF Filed Oct. 1, 1962 layer lies'in a protected position in under the shelf and the freely exposed portion of the plastic layer is not exposed to damage through impact.
The invention relates furthermore to a holder for the ribbons with information. This holder is characterized in that it consists in a substantially U-formed rail, where the free ends of the arms have portions bent toward each other and where a yieldable list is placed in the rail, said list bearing yieldably to one side against the back portion of the U-formed rail and to the other side against the bent portions of the arms.
In the drawing are shown four embodiments of a steel shelf according to the invention, wherein FIG. 1 shows a cross section of a steel shelf in a first embodiment,
FIG. 2 a cross section in the front edge portions of a steel shelf in a second embodiment,
FIG. 3 a cross section in the front edge portions of a steel shelf of a third embodiment and FIG. 4 a cross section in both lateral sections of a steel shelf in a fourth embodiment.
In the drawings a sheet steel part comprises a rectangular, plane main portion 1 with a relatively slight thickness, e.g. 0.7 mm., along the forward edge of the main portion 1 an approximately 180 curvature 2, continued by a rearwardly extending first strip-shaped portion 3 substantially parallel to the portion 1, and in continuation of the portion 3 a Second stripshaped portion 4 extending approximately at right angles to the plane of the main portion; in connection of this portion 4 there is a forwardly directed third strip-shaped portion 5. The rear edge portion of the sheet steel part is bent upward to form a vertical supporting wall 6. On the underside of main portion 1, in the proximity of the rear edge, is fastened a U-shaped rail 7, the opening of which forms a groove directed toward the front edge of the shelf. The curved main portion 2 and the strip-shaped portion 3 together form a corresponding groove at the front edge of the shelf.
' The ends of the main portion 1 may be bent downward (not shown) so that the shelfs ends can be hooked into bearing rails in a book-case.
The innermost portion of the strip-shaped portion 5 may be bent slightly upward so that the groove formed by the strip- shaped portions 3, 4 and 5 can hold a ribbon with information which can be set in from the end or, if it consists of elastic material, can be edged into place.
In the grooves at the front end and the rear edges and projecting downward under the shelf may be placed guide portions of a book-end having a downwardly projecting looped spring member which connects the guiding portrons and press them yieldingly into said grooves underside the main portions.
On the front side of the strip-shaped portion 4 in the embodiment shown in FIG. 1 is fastened by spot welding a U-shaped rail with a back portion 8 and two arms 9 and 10 that are provided with edge portions 11 and 12 directed toward each other. In said U-shaped rail is placed a strip of foam rubber 13 holding a plastic ribbon 14 pressed against the edge portions 11 and 12. The plastic ribbon may carry information on its front side. By pressing it inward the ribbon may be displaced along the foam rubber strip. Several short plastic ribbons may be employed on one shelf. The foam rubber strip 13 extends preferably along the whole length of the shelf. The plastic ribbon 14 has preferably such a width that when pressing at the top or the bottom it can be pulled out at the opposite edge. Insertion may be per formed in the same manner.
On the upper side of the main portion 1 there is glued a flexible plastic material 15 which at its one edge abuts the upwardly extending portion 6 while said material at the opposite edge is bent around the curvature 2 and under the strip portion 3 onto which it is also glued.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2 the portions 3 and 5 are inclined so that they provide an undercut groove. In this groove there is inserted a wooden list 16 in the front side of which there is formed a groove 17 for inserting rearwardly projecting fixing means of plastic letters. The wooden list may be replaced by a plastic strip having information thereon.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 3 the strip- shaped portions 4 and 5 are omitted. On the underside of the main portion 1 there is secured, for instance by spot welding, a horizontal strip-shaped portion 18 of a steel sheet profile rod which is formed with a curvature 19, a horizontal arm 20 bearing against the upper side of the portion 3, a vertically downwardly extending stripshaped portion 21 and a forwardly extending, bent edge portion or strip-shaped portion 22. The profile rod is substantially heavier than the steel sheet from which the main portion 1 is made.
The steel shelf shown in FIG. 4 consists of a steel sheet part formed with a rectangular, plane main portion 23, at each longitudinal edge of said main portion with an approximately 180 curvature 24 and 25 respectively, and in continuation of this curvature a profile portion with generally C-profile comprising a back portion 26 and 27 an upper curved arm 28 and 29, and a lower curved arm 30 and 31, respectively. The outer portions of the arms converge greatly. In the undercut groove formed by the profile portions 27, 29, 31 there is arranged a list 32 consisting of foam nylon and shaped to fill the groove elastically so that it presses against the back portion 27 and against the converging outer end portions of the arms 29 and 31.
A strip 33 of sheet material, preferably an elastic material, is inserted in the groove in front of the list 32 so that the latter keeps the longitudinal edges of the strip 33 pressed against the converging end portion of the arms 29 and 31 so as to retain the strip 33 in position.
Pressing inward on the strip 33 results in loosening the latter so that it is easily displaced in the longitudinal direction of the groove. If the strip 33 consists of elastic material it will be easily inserted into the groove and removed therefrom without displacing it longitudinally.
I claim:
'1. A steel shelf comprising, in combination, a planar sheet member formed with a rectangular, plane main portion and a curved portion along at least one longitudinal edge thereof and extending throughout an arc of at least approximately 180 degrees, said curved portion having at one side a flushing transition to said main portion, a first strip-shaped portion in continuation of the other side of said curved portion and having a flushing transition to said curved portion and being substantially parallel to the plane of said main portion, and a second strip-shaped portion in continuation of said first strip-shaped portion extending generally away from and approximately at right angles to the plane of said main portion and parallel to said one longitudinal edge.
