Be it known that we, GILFORD FLEWWEL- LING and GILBERT J. HARRIS, subjects of the Queen of Great Britain, and residents at Hampton, in the county of Kings and Province of New Brunswick, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Making Match-Splints; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has relation to the manufacture of matches and it consists in the combination and novel arrangement of devices, all as hereinafter set forth,and pointed out in the appended claims.

The object of the invention is to facilitate the manufacture of match-cards wherein the match-splints, although divided from each other for the greater portion of their length, are nevertheless in contact, and support each other to aid in the preservation of the card from casual breakage.

In carrying out this invention I provide a frame, A, having suitable parallel guides, B,

between which the stock is fed by the rollers,

G. Extending through one of these guides is arranged a gang of saws, O, which, as the stock passes them, form parallel grooves in the edge of the .stock, these grooves being preferably of tapering form in section. As

ways transverse to the guides B, in which are secured, usually in a suitable clamp, the gang of incisor-knives E, which project toward the advancing end of the stock which is fed from the rollers. These incisors are parallel in three directions, and are arranged in the planes of the saws and of the guidestrips D. They are short and quite thin laterally, their front and rear edges being cutting edges. They are preferably of convex form. The stock being fed down to the plate F and its incisor-knives, which reciprocate across the path between the guides or at the lower end thereof, is incised by said knives in parallel lines, these incisors extending into the stock a short distance, usually about one-eighth of an inch.

The incisors extend from the bottoms of the of the same, but not entirely cutting the stock through at thisside, so that the stock is left entire at said opposite side.

The plate F is also provided with a slicing bit or knife, H, the plane of which is in or parallel to the plane of the reciprocating plate, and transverse to the planes of the incisors. This slicing-bit H is usually made'in jawed or V form, its cutting-edges being beveled on the side away from the stock. A pressertongue, K, is also usually provided to hold the card being cut off by the slicer. On the return of the reciprocating plate, after the parallel incisions are made in the end of the stock, the slicing-knife operates to cut off the card from the end of the stock. This card passes out through an opening in the plate F, and is ready to receive the lighting composition. 4

Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. The combination, with the stock-feeding guides and the grooving gang-saws, of the gang incisor-knives acting in the planes of 9 the saws and at the ends of the said guidestrips, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with the guides for the stock and the gang of grooving-saws arranged partially in the path thereof of the guidestrips extending in the planes of the saws,and
