- The drive for the members 22 and 23- consists of an electric motor 31 mounted in the base 13 and having a drive pulley 32 connected to the generally indicated pulley 33 ofIa speed reducer 34 by a belt 35. The driven shaft of the speed reducer 34 is provided with a pulley 36' connected by a belt 37 to a pulley 38 on the shaft 16.
As it is desirable to be able to vary the speed of the feedmembers 22 and-23, the pulley 33 is shown, see FIG- URE 7, as of: the type including sections 39 and 40. While both pulley sections are fast on the shaft 41 of thespeed reducer 34, the section 40 is slidably splined thereto as at 42, with outward movement being yieldably opposed by a spring 43 backed by a cage 44 fixed on the end of the shaft 41. By increasing the pull of the belt on the pulley 33, the section is moved outwardly against the opposing action of the spring 43 with the result that the effective diameter of the pulley 33 is decreased resulting in an increase in speed at which the shaft 41 is turned by the motor 31. To vary such a pull, and accordingly the speed of the members 22 and 23, the motor 31, see FIG- URE l, is mounted on a bracket 45 pivoted as at 46 to the base structure and pivotably connected as at 47 to a link 48 having. a threaded connection 49 with a rotatable stem 50. The stem 50 extends through the front wall 51, where it is provided with a knob 52;
The sole 24 must be securely gripped between the feed members 22 and 23 and, for that reason, downward pressure is applied on the member 23. To accomplish that result, the head 15 is provided with a piston-cylinder unit, the cylinder being indicated at 53 and the stem of its piston at 54. The stem 54 is connected to a bracket 55 pivotally connected as at 56 to the arm 18.
' As may be seen in FIGURE 8, a conduit 57 is provided with a valve 58 and an adjustable pressure regulator 59 is connected to the upper end of the cylinder 53 thus to provide predetermined but adjustable opposition to upward movement of the feed member 23 regardless of whether it is in engagement with the fore or thinner part of the sole 24 or in engagement with the heel part 25 thereof. The valve 58 connects a conduit 60 to the conduit 57.. The conduit 60 is in communication with a three way valve 61 having a conduit 62 in communication with the lower part of the cylinder 53 so that, when the valve 61 is positioned to connect the conduits 60 and 62, air is delivered to the cylinder 53 under sufficient pressure to raise the arm 18 thus to enable a sole'to be inserted or removed from between the members 22 and 23, otherwise the lower end of the cylinder 53 is vented.
It is preferred that the operation of the valve 61 be controlled by the operator by means of a treadle 63 pivoted as at 64 and operatively connected to the valve stem 65 to move it from a normal venting position into its position wherein the arm 18 is raised.
It will be noted that the trimming member 27, which is shown as a cutter, is removably mounted on a vertical shaft 66. In order that the axis of the trimming member 27, regardless of its diameter, may be located in a desired position in or close to a vertical plane inclusive of the axes of the shafts 16 and 17 and in a desired relationship to the feed rolls 22 and 23 and to the guide member 26, the shaft 66 is journalled in a hinge part 67 in the form of a mount connected by the pintle 68 to a hinge part 69 shown as connected to an upright 70 of the base frame by an adjusting screw 71, there being an adjustable screw 72 hearing against the proximate face of the upright 70'. By this construction, not only can the mount 67 be shifted transversely but also the axis of the trimming member 27 may be precisely adjusted. For that reason, the front wall 51 of the base 13 is provided with transverse slots 73 for'the anchoring screw 74. A set screw 75 is threaded through the front wall 51 for engagement with the mount 67 to provide means for adjusting its angular relationship relative to the hinge part 69 and the front wall 51. The mount 67 also supports a motor 76 whose pulley 77 is connected to a pulley 78 on the shaft 66 by a belt 79.
The guide member 26 is shown, see FIGURE 2, as mounted on a driven shaft 80 of a speed reducer 81 secured to the work-supporting surface 12 with the axis of the guide member 26 being in a plane in which the feed members 23 and 24 rotate and abutting the opening 11.
The infeed shaft 81A of the speed reducer 81 is shown as connected to a motor 82 by a flexible shaft 83. The motor 82 is provided with a variable speed device, generally indicated at 84, whose adjusting shaft 85 is exposed through the front wall 51 and provided with an adjusting knob 86. A manually operable lock 87 is threaded through the wall 51 and is operable to clamp the segment 88 on the shaft 85 thereagainst. The device 84 is desirably of the type shown in United States Letters Patent No. 2,691,896. With this construction, the operator can quickly and easily adjust the speed of the guide member 26 to secure the desired edge trimming effect with soles of different thickness as well as those of varying thickness.
When it is desired that the speed of the guide member 26 be automatically changed as when the sole is being trimmed in the heel area and that area is materially thicker than in the fore part, the device 84 is provided with an adjustable stop 89, see FIGURE 3, overlying the plate 90 on the shaft 85 and engageable by the rib 91 thereof. A spring 92 is operable to yieldably maintain the rib 91 in a position in which the speed of the guide member 26 is correct for the proper trimming of the fore part of the sole 24. The stop 89 is pre-set to provide, when engaged by the rib 91, that speed of the guide member 26 that results in the movement of the sole 24 relative to the trimming member 27 that provides the desired sole edge trimming in the heel area 25.
The plate 90 is moved against the action of the spring 92 when air is delivered into the cylinder 93 whose piston includes a stem 94 in engagement with the rib 91. An air conduit 95, in communication with the cylinder 93 has a solenoid controlled valve whose circuit 97 includes a switch 98 having an arm 99 disposed as a feeler in contact with the sole 24 and actuated to close the circuit 97 when the heel area 25 is engaged thereby. The switch 98 is mounted on the table top 12 with the feeler arm 99 located closely adjacent the trimming member 26. When the circuit 97 is closed, air is delivered into the cylinder 93 thus to cause the plate 90 to be swung, and accordingly the shaft 85 to be turned to bring the rib 91 against the stop 89 to provide a slower speed of the guide member 26 thereby ensuring an increased trimming effect in the heel area.
If the guide member 26 is enough thinner than a sole 24 in the area of its heel 25, the sole may occasionally be tilted out of position. To prevent such an occurrence, a sole hold-down is used. The hold-down is generally indicated at 100 and may be seen in FIGURES 2 and 6.
The hold-down 100 consists of a base 101 secured to the table top 12 as by a screw 102. The base 101 has side walls 103 supporting the pivot 104 for the rocker arm 105. Forwardly and rearwardly of the pivot axis, the rocker'arm 105 is provided with set screws 106 and 107, respectively, adapted to be adjusted to limit the motion of the rocker arm 105. The hold-down arm 108 has a slot 109 enabling it to be adjustably connected to the rocker arm 105 by screws 110. The free end of the arm 108 is U-shaped with its extremity 111 elevated for holding engagement with the heel 25' to prevent its being lifted as a result of its engagement with the guide member 26 and its height is adjustable by means of the set screws 106 and 107.
It will be appreciated that an edge trimmer for shoe soles in accordance with the invention is well adapted to meet a wide range of requirements. Contributing to this result is the adjustability of speedof both the guide members and the feed members, the adjustability ofthe opposition to upward movement of the feed member 23,
sole support, a rotatable guide member for advancing a sole edge and a rotatable edge trimming member" both rotatably mounted on said support with their axespan' allel and with their peripheriesengageable bytthe edge of a sole placed fiat on said support, a pair of rotatable feed members, one engageable with the under surface of said sole and the other engageable with the'upperfsurface thereof, means mounting one feedroll for movement towards and away from the sole, saidfeed-members being operable to maintain the edge of the sole against said trimming and guide members as it is advanced by said guide member, all of said members cooperating to ei fect the continuous advance and engagement of the [edge of the sole with said trimming member throughout the entire length, a drive for said feedmembers,a drive for said trimming member, a drive for said guide member, and means yieldably maintaining predetermined opposition to movement of said movable feed member away from said sole regardless of changes in sole thickness. p 2. In an edge trimmer for shoe soles that are thicker in the heel area than they are forwardly thereof, a flat sole support, a rotatable guide member for advancing a sole edge and a rotatable edge trimming member both rotatably mounted on said support with their axes parallel and with their peripheries engageable by the edge of a sole placed fiat on said support, a pair of rotatable feed members, one engageable with the under surface of said sole and the other engageable with the upper surface thereof, means mounting one feed member for movement towards and away from the sole said feed members being operable to maintain the edge of the sole against said trimming and guide members as it is advanced by said guide member, all of said members cooperating to effect the continuous advance and engagement of the edge of the sole with said trimming member throughout the entire length, a drive for said feed members, a drive for said trimming member, a drive for said guide member, a feeler engageable with the upper fact of a sole disposed on said support and movable in response to changes in its thickness, and means operable by feeler movement to modify one of said drives to increase the effect of the trimming member on the edge of the sole in the heel area thereof.
8. In an edge trimmer for shoe soles that are thicker in the heel area than they are forwardly thereof, a fiat sole support, a rotatable guide member for advancing a sole edge and a rotatable edge trimming member both rotatably mounted on said support with their axes parallel and with their peripheries engageable by the edge of a sole placed flat on said support, a pair of rotatable feed members, one engageable with the under surface of said sole and the other engageable with the upper surface thereof, means mounting one feed member for movement towards and away from the sole said feed members being operable to maintain the edge of the sole against said trimming and guide members as it is advanced by said guide member, all of said members cooperating to effect the continuous advance and engagement of the edge of the sole with said trimming member throughout the entire length, a drive for said feed members, a drive for said trimming member, a drive for said guide member, a feeler engageable with the upper face of a sole disposed on said support and movable in response to changes in its thickness, and means operable by feeler movement to modify said guide member drive to increase the effect of the trimming member on the edge of the sole in the heel area thereof.
9. In an edge trimmer for shoe soles that are thicker in the heel area than they are forwardly thereof, a flat sole support, a rotatable guide member for advancing a sole edge and a rotatable edge trimming member both rotatably mounted on said support with their axes parallel and withtheir peripheries engageable by the edge of a sole placed fiat on said support, a pair of rotatable feed members, one engageable with the under surface of said sole and the other engageable with the upper surface thereof, means mounting one feed member for movement towards and away from the sole, said feed members being operable to maintain the edge of the sole against said trimming and guide members as it is advanced by said guide member, all of said members cooperating to effect thhe continuous advance and engagement of the edge of the sole with said trimming member throughout its entire length, a drive for said feed member, a drive for said trimming member, a two speed drive for said guide member, a feeler engageable with the upper face of a sole disposed on said support and movable in response to changes in its thickness, and means operable by feeler movement to control said guide member drive to establish the low speed thereof in the thicker area and the high speed thereof in the thinner area.
10. In an edge trimmer for shoe soles that are thicker in the heel area than they are forwardly thereof, a flat sole support, a rotatable guide member for advancing a sole edge and a rotatable edge trimming member both rotatably mounted on said support with their axes parallel and with their peripheries engageable by the edge of a sole placed flat on said support, a pair of rotatable feed members, one engageable with the under surface of said sole and the other with the upper surface thereof, means mounting one feed member for movement towards and away from the sole said feed members being operable to maintain the edge of the sole against said trimming and guide members as it is advanced by said guide member, all of said members cooperating to effect the continuous advance and engagement of the edge of the sole with said trimming member throughout its entire length, a drive for said feed member, a drive for said trimming member, a drive for said guide member including a motor and a speed changer driven thereby and including a control, a spring yieldably holding said control in a position providing high speed, a feeler engageable with the upper face of a sole disposed on said support and movable into an operative position by the heel area, and a normally open switch closed by the feeler in its operative position, and means to move said control into a low speed position, said means including an operating circuit including said switch.
11. The edge trimmer of claim 9 in which the circuit includes a solenoid, and the control moving means includes an air operated piston and a valve in control thereof and opened by the solenoid when energized.
12. The edge trimmer of claim 9 in which the control includes a speed controlling arm to which the spring and the moving means are both connected and an adjustable stop is provided to stop the arm when actuated by the moving means.
13. In an edge trimmer for shoe soles that are thicker in the heel area than they are forwardly thereof, a fiat sole support, a rotatable guide member for advancing a sole edge and a rotatable edge trimming member both rotatably mounted on said support with their axes parallel and with their peripheries engageable by the edge of a sole placed fiat on said support, a pair of rotatable feed members, one engageable with the under surface of said sole and the other engageable with the upper surface thereof, means mounting one feed member for movement towards and away from the sole said feed members being operable to maintain the edge of the sole against said trimming and guide members as it is advanced by said guide member, all of said members cooperating to effect the continuous advance and engagement of the edge of the sole with said trimming member throughout the entire length, a drive for said feed members, a drive for said trimming member, a drive for said guide member, and means to adjust universally the pivot of the axis of the trimming member.
14. In an edge trimmer for shoe soles that are thicker in the heel area than they are forwardly thereof, a fiat sole support, a rotatable guide member for advancing a sole edge and a rotatable edge trimming member both rotatably mounted on said support with their axes parallel and with their peripheries engageable by the edge of a sole placed flat on said support, a pair of rotatable feed members, one engageable with the under surface of said sole and the other engageable with the upper surface thereof, means mounting one feed member for movement towards and away from the sole said feed members being operable to maintain the edge of the sole against said trimming and guide members as it is advanced by said guide member, all of said members cooperating to effect the continuous advance and engagement of the edge of the sole with said trimming member throughout the entire length, a drive for said feed members, a drive for said trimming member, a drive for said guide member, and mounting means for said drive for said trimming member including a hinge part in the form of a mount, a part adjustably attached to said trimmer for transverse movement, the hinge axis being vertical, said mount including means for adjusting its angular relation to said attached hinge part, said mounting means enabling the axis of said trimming member to be set in a desired relation to the feed members;
15. In an edge trimmer for shoe soles that are thicker in the heel area than they are forwardly thereof, a flat sole support, a rotatable guide member for advancing a sole edge and a rotatable edge trimming member both rotatably mounted on said support with their axes parallel and with their peripheries engageable by the edge of a sole placed flat on said support, a pair of rotatable feed members, one engageable with the under surface of said sole and the other engageable with the upper surface thereof, means mounting one feed member for movement towards and away from the sole said feed members being operable to maintain the edge of the sole against said trimming and guide members as it is advanced by said guide member, all of said members cooperating to eifect the continuous advance and engagement of the edge of the sole with said trimming member throughout the entire length, a drive for said feed members, a drive for said trimming member, a drive for said guide member and a to which the first portion is pivotally connected, and a second portion connected to the first portion to enable the length of the hold down to be varied.

Claims (1)

1. IN AN EDGE TRIMMER FOR SHOE SOLES THAT ARE THICKER IN THE HEEL AREA THAN THEY ARE FORWARDLY THEREOF, A FLAT SOLE SUPPORT, A ROTATABLE GUIDE MEMBER FOR ADVANCING A SOLE EDGE AND A ROTATABLE EDGE TRIMMING MEMBER BOTH ROTATABLY MOUNTED ON SAID SUPPORT WITH THEIR AXES PARALLEL AND WITH THEIR PERIPHERIES ENGAGEABLE BY THE EDGE OF A SOLE PLACED FLAT ON SAID SUPPORT, A PAIR OF ROTATABLE FEED MEMBERS, ONE ENGAGEABLE WITH THE UNDER SURFACE OF SAID SOLE AND THE OTHER ENGAGEABLE WITH THE UPPER SURFACE THEREOF, MEANS MOUNTING ONE FEED ROLL FOR MOVEMENT TOWARDS AND AWAY FROM THE SOLE, SAID FEED MEMBERS BEING OPERABLE TO MAINTAIN THE EDGE OF THE SOLE AGAINST SAID TRIMMING SAID GUIDE MEMBERS AS IT IS ADVANCED BY SAID GUIDE MEMBER, ALL OF THE MEMBERS COOPERATING TO EFFECT THE CONTINUOUS ADVANCE AND ENGAGEMENT OF THE EDGE OF THE SOLE WITH SAID TRIMMING MEMBER THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE LENGTH, A DRIVE FOR FEED MEMBERS, A DRIVE FOR SAID TRIMMING MEMBER, A DRIVE FOR SAID GUIDE MEMBERS, AND MEANS YIELDABLY MAINTAINING PREDETERMINED OPPOSITIONS TO MOVEMENT OF SAID MOVABLE FEED MEMBER AWAY FROM SAID SOLE REGARDLESS OF CHANGES IN SOLE THICKNESS.
