Code (1952), see. 266) The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
The invention relates to hose guides and supports for a hose nozzle on a hose reel so as to locate such nozzle in a fixed position on said reel, which prevents it from being tangled with the convolutions of the coil of hose on the reel yet which will allow the nozzle to be instantly moved from such fixed or retracted position in close association with the coil to an operative position outwardly of the same and/or which will permit the entire length of hose to be uncoiled from the reel. The invention is particularly applicable to hose reels wherein the hose is uncoiled against the action of a spring which recoils the hose on the reel upon release of the uncoiling force.
Hose reels are usually furnished with or without a fixed hose guide. Either form presents disadvantages.
In the case of a fixed hose guide, the dsspensing nozzle protrudes beyond the reel when the hose is not in use, thus causing the reel to be cumbersome rather than oompact. Without the hose guide, the nozzle tends to override the stopping point, hence becoming inaccessible for use.
The present invention eliminates the aforesaid disadvantages since the nozzle, when retracted, hugs the hose on the reel to form a compact unit. When extended, the hose guide clears the reel and permits its rotation to any position without binding of the hose.
With the foregoing in view, it is an object of the invention to provide an improved hose nozzle support and hose guide of the class described.
A further object is to provide a novel mount for such support and hose guide which includes means providing a shelter or housing for at least the fitting connecting the hose to the nozzle.
Another object is to provide a novel support and guide of the class described which comprises a yoke formed with a pair of arms straddling said reel and having one pair of ends pivoted to the frame for the same and a combined nozzle support and hose guide pivoted between the other ends of said arms whereby said assembly is swingable from a retracted position locating said nozzle closely adjacent said reel to an operative position in radial relation to the same.
Other objects and advantages reside in the specific structure of the invention, the structure of the several elements of the same, combinations and subcombinations of such elements with each other and/or with a hose reel, hose, nozzle and fitting for the same, all of which will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art upon reference to the attached drawing which illustrates one species of the invention and to the following specification wherein the invention is described and claimed.

FIGURE 2 is a view similar to FIGURE 1 but showing the parts in the advanced or operative position; and
FIGURE 3 is a sectional view taken along lines 3--3 of FIGURE 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows the hose reel being omitted.
Referring specifically to the drawing wherein like reference characters designate like parts in all views, desig ice nates a frame for a hose reel. Frame 10 includes two side frame members 9 between which hose reel 11 is mounted on a shaft or the like 12. A hose 13 is coiled on the reel 11 and is connected to any suitable nozzle 14 by a fitting 15 which may comprise a quick operating cam type of connector fitting as is disclosed in U.S. Military Standard MS 27,019, dated September 23, 1960. Such fittings include cam levers 16 which are pivoted thereto.
In the species illustrated, the nozzle support-hose guide of the invention comprises a yoke including a pair of arms 17 having ends which are integrally connected together by a tubular bearing 18 which is freely pivoted on any sutable spindle or shaft 19 which may comprise a bolt which extends through the side frame members 9 and which is secured in position in any suitable manner as by the lock nut 20. Spindle 19 is located radially outwardly of the outermost convolution of the coil of hose 13.
Collar 25 is a tubular member which is oval in cross section and at least wide and long enough to accommodate the fitting 15 therein. The oval cross section permits the collar 25 to accommodate also the fitting cam levers 16 therein while, at the same time, preventing the nozzle from being twisted by tensions generated in the hose by the coiling thereof. This arrangement insures that the spout 24 of the nozzle 14 is always pointed downward so that it is closed to rain, snow, sleet or the like. Also, the collar 25 covers the lever arms 16 and their pivots to protect them from the elements when the parts are in the non-use position. This also prevents them from being damaged by physical contact with foreign objects or from being accidentally swung to the radially outward position wherein they release the hose for disconnection from the nozzle.
Collar 25 includes suitable means for pivotally connecting the same to the upper ends of the arms 17. In the embodiment illustrated, such means comprise a pair of laterally aligned and outwardly directed tubular bearings 21 in the nature of trunnions. Such trunnions 21 pivotally receive a pair of stub shafts 22 which may be threaded through holes 5 and 6 in the upper ends of the arms 17. Obviously, other pivotal arrangements are contemplated within the scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed. The trunnions 21 may be reinforced if desired by suitable buttresses of flanges 23 which likewise reinforce side portions of the collar 25.
Stops 7 and 8 are provided on the inside faces of side members 9 for limiting the rotation of arms 17 in retracted and extended positions.
In operation, nozzle 14 when in its inoperative position (see FIG. 1) is held by normal spring tension (such as disclosed in US. patent to Cook et al. No. 2,150,025 of March 7, 1939) of hose reel 11. The butt end of nozzle 14 with the hose fitting 15 is retained within collar 25, its inoperative position being governed by stops 7. When nozzle 14 is pulled out towards its operative position (FIG. 2) collar 25 pivots freely on stub shafts 22 and swings out with arms 17 which swing out to a maximum distance which is controlled by stops 8. Thus, hose nozzle 14 and hose 13 may be quickly payed out or retracted.
Variations and modifications may be effected without departing from the scope of the novel concept of the present invention as set forth in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In combination with a hose reel including a frame therefor, a hose coiled on said reel and a tubular collar for guiding said hose and supporting said nozzle, said collar being sized to permit free passage of the hose therethrough but being too small to permit passage of the nozzle therethrough; a yoke for mounting said collar on said frame comprising a pair of laterally spaced arms having upper and lower ends, tubular bearing means connecting said lower ends together, an axle fixed to said frame forwardly of said coiled hose and extending through said bearing, said collar having aligned lateral extensions in the nature of tubular trunnions, stub shafts fixed to the upper ends of said yoke arms and pivotally received in said tubular trunnions whereby said yoke is capable of swinging movement to and from a retracted position wherein said nozzle is supported forwardly of said collar adjacent said coiled hose and an operative position wherein said nozzle is supported in radially outwardly disposed relation to said coiled hose, reel and frame, and interengaging stop means on said frame for limiting the swinging movement of the yoke to said retracted and operative positions.
2. The combination of claim 1, therebeing a fitting con necting said hose to said nozzle, and said collar being sized to receive said fitting therein and provide a Weather cover therefor when said collar is in at least said retracted position.

Claims (1)

1. IN COMBINATION WITH A HOSE REEL INCLUDING A FRAME THEREFOR, A HOSE COILED ON SAID REEL AND A TUBULAR COLLAR FOR GUIDING SAID HOSE AND SUPPORTING SAID NOZZLE, SAID COLLAR BEING SIZED TO PERMIT FREE PASSAGE OF THE HOSE THEREHROUGH BUT BEING TOO SMALL TO PERMIT PASAGE OF THE NOZZLE THERETHROUGH; A YOKE FOR MOUNTING SAID COLLAR ON SAID FRAME COMPRISING A PAIR OF LATERALLY SPACED ARMS HAVING UPPER AND LOWER ENDS, TUBULAR BEARING MEANS CONNECTING SAID LOWER ENDS TOGETHER, AN AXLW FIXED TO SAID FRAME FORWARDLY OF SAID COILED HOSE AND EXTENDING THROUGH SAID BEARING, SAID COLLAR HAVING ALIGNED LATERAL EXTENSIONS IN THE NATURE OF TUBULAR TRUNNIONS, TUB SHAFTS FIXED TO THE
