Description

UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
J. G. TREADWELL AND WM. HAILES, 0F ALBANY, NEW YORK.
STOVE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 32,257, dated May 7, 1861; Reissued. February 3,
i. 1868, No. 1,397.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OHN G. TREADWELL and TVILLIA T HAILES, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State. of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Base-Burning Stoves; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the annexed drawings making a part of this specification Figures 1 and 2 represent vertical sections of the stove.
In these figures A, represents the external casing of the stove which is made in any ornamental form, its low r portion being perforated as represented in Fig. 1, so that air can pass it and the cylinder within.
B, represents the fire pot, and C, the supply cyl nder immediately over it. The lower end of the supply cylinder is provided with an annular contracting ring or diaphragm c. The object of this ring is to support the body of the coal in the supply cylinder and prevent its forcing down too much into the combrstion chamber or fire pot B. The coal is allowed to drop through this ring as it is neededin the fire pot, though the converging sides of the ring evidently support the body of the coal.
H, represents the inverted frustum of a cone secured betwe n the supply chamber and fire pot and also between the metallic ring (Z, and the ring or diaphragm c. This frustum is made of brick, black lead, soapstone, or any other suitable nonconducting substance. The metallic ring d, is provided with a flange through which it is bolted, or secured to the supply cylinder, and answers the purpose of holding and sustaining the frustum in proper position.
D, D, represent two descending flues which receive the products of combustion from between the supply cylinder and fire chamber, as shown in Fig. 1, and convey them down into the hollow bottom of the stove or bottom fine from whence they are carried up the flue E, to the smoke pipe. The advantages of these flues D, are very great in this class of stoves, forit is very essential that the smoke, gases, &c. should have some place of exit without being compelled to descend through the tire.
J, J, represent the combustion chamber which is protected from the coal in the supply cylinder by means of the ring 0, and the frustum H, and being thus protected it is evident that a continuous combustion is promoted around the entire top of the fire pot.
At the top of the supply cylinder, and between it and the outer casing is a chamber F, for receiving the gas which is formed in, and which escapes from the chamber C. The gas thus escaping passes into the smoke pipe through pipe G.
a, and 6, represent two covers one on top of the stove the other on top of the supply cylinder. n, which passes through the cover 0, and through the cap piece m, which rests upon cover 6.
It will be seen that the cap piece is not level on its bottom and that when its lowest edge touches the top 6, it pushes the rod a ainst the opposite side of the opening in the top through which it passes and thus holds it.
The rod 12, may be raisedor lowered at pleasure and it Will always remain where it is stopped. Vhen it is wished to move the rod, the cap piece 112, is raised so as to have the opening through it in line with the opening in the top 6, the rod will then move freely and easily.
The top 6 is pivoted to the top and slides out of the way when it is desired to fill the stove with coal.
Having thus fullydescribed our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure "by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of the contracting circular ring or diaphragm c, the inverted frustum H, and the metallic ring d, when the same are used as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combmation with the subject of the first claim, a continuous or circular combustion chamber, between the fire pot and supply cylinder arranged withtwo or more descending flues as and for the purpose specified.
3. The employment of the covers a, e, the cap piece 1%, and the rod 4%, constructed arranged and used as and for the purpose specified.
J NO. Gr. TREADWVELL. WM. HAILES.
