ELECTRICAL COMPONENT, TUBE, AND TUBE-HOLDER-SHIELD COMBINATION Filed Oct. 19, 1964 v //7 T i! Inn INVENTOR. THEODORE E HA/VDl/VG United States Patent 3,225,259 ELECTRICAL COMPONENT, TUBE, AND TUBE- HOLDER-SHIELD COMBINATION Theodore E. Handing, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Amplifone Corporation, Chicago, 11]., a corporation of Illinois Filed Oct. 19, 1964, Ser. No. 404,825 3 Claims. (Cl. 31799) This invention relates to high-voltage, tube-holdershield elements for certain types of electrically-operated equipment.
In certain types of electrically-operated equipment, using high-voltage tubes adjacent electrical components, it is necessary to shield the tube. Heretof ore tubes were normally mounted in a tube socket secured to a base in the television set, this takes up additional space. The present invention was conceived to eliminate this defect and to place the tube and its shield directly to the electric component such as for instance, a flyback.
The .main objects of this invention are; to provide an improved form of combination tube-holder-shield element; to provide an improved combination tube-holdershield element of this kind structured from flame retardent, high-dielectric strength material; to provide a tube holder of this kind which may be positioned and made part of a flyback unit; and to provide an improved combination tube-holder-shield element of this kind of such simple construction as to make very inexpensive its manufacture and extremely facilitate its installation and use in the circuitry for such equipment.
In the adaptation shown in the accompanying drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a plan view of a combination tube-holdershield element, constructed in accordance with this invention, as part of an electrical component commonly referred to as a flyback coil,
FIG. 2 is a side elevational view of the device;
FIG. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the element, taken on the plane of the line 3-3 of FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a perspective view of the preferred form of such a combination tube-holder-shield element constructed in accordance with this invention;
FIG. 5 is a transverse, cross-sectional view similar to FIG. 3 but showing a strip of metal foil interposed between a tube and the element; and
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of such a combination tube-holder-shield element.
The essential concept of this invention involves a cylindrical element formed of flame retardent, high dielectric strength material for embracement of the tube and having an exteriorly-integrated rib for mounting the element on a suitable electric component to form a part thereof.
A combination tube-holder-shield element, for use with an electrical component 7, embodying the foregoing concept comprises either a longitudinally-slotted cylindricaltype element 8 or a complete cylindrical element 9 having an integrated rib 10 for attachment of the element to a suitable support.
The electrical component 7, herein shown, represents a type for use with which this combination tube-holdershield element has been particularly designed. It is a type commonly known as a flyback. However it is to be understood that this device may be used in connection with other electrical components. As here shown, this component 7 comprises a pair of annular coils 11 and 11 mounted on one leg 12 of an O-shaped armature. On opposed legs 13 a conventional terminal plate 14 is secured and the device of the present invention 8 respective- 3,225,259 Patented Dec. 21, 1965 ly as shown. Attached to and leading from the coil 11 are wires 16 attached to a conventional connector cap 17 for setting over a stem on the end of the tube T, which is to be frictionally embraced within either the slotted type element 8 or the full cylindrical element 9.
Either of these elements 8 or 9 is structured from a flame-retardent material of high dielectric strength. One such material, suitable for this purpose, is polypropylene. The material is molded into tubes of convenient lengths and requisite diameters and subsequently cut into suitable lengths to form the elements 8 and 9 for use with particular electrical components 7. The element 8 has a longitudinal portion cut out to form a gap or slot 18, disposed axially of the element, as shown in all the figures except FIGURE 6. When so slotted, the element, although very stable by virtue of the nature of the polypropylene, is somewhat flexible so that a tube T may be pressed into the element 8 radially through the gap or slot 18, and likewise removed from the element 8.
The rib 10 is herein shown to be of T shape crosssection, of a thickness somewhat greater than the thickness of the elements 8 and 9, and of a length slightly less than the elements themselves. Obviously, this rib 10 could be structured from the same material as the elements 8 and 9 or from some other non-conductive substance. Other forms of such a rib 10 could be used than that herein indicated. For example, the transverse part of a T-sha-pe rib could be of arcuate contour of the same diameter as the element 8 or 9 so as to partially embrace the respective element. The stem part of the rib could be disposed radially outward either transversely to or parallel with the axis of the element.
The integrating of a separately-formed rib 10 with the element 8 or 9 may be effected by the use of any of the conventional adhesives. Or the rib 10 could be molded as an integral part of the element.
It should be obvious that if the tubes need further shielding the interior of the elements 8 or 9 may be lined with a thin sheet of metal foil 19, as shown in FIG. 5.
Normally the opposed legs 12 are provided with longitudinal grooves on their outer surfaces for seating the usual bolts 22 for securing the terminal plate to the flyback unit. These same bolts are employed to anchor the shield element 8 or 9 to the unit as shown through the apertures 23 one of which is in the form of a slot to compensate for any lateral adjustment required.
The tube T is provided with its usual prongs or terminals 21 to which is connected the cables 20 and the other normal cables (not shown) and required in the circuitry of a television set.
It should now be obvious that the development of this invention helps in solving the problem of decreasing the size of television receivers which problem has been sought for a long time in this industry.
It is to be understood that details of the construction shown may be altered or omitted without departing from the spirit of this invention as defined by the following claims.
