Description

Nov. 30, 1965 e. HEGEDUS 3,
PROTECTIVE COVER FOR DRAWING-BOARDS AND THE LIKE Filed April 25, 1963 INVENTOR Gabor Hegeclus ATTOR United States Patent 9 3,229,661 PRQTECTIVE COVER FOR DRAWING-BOARDS AND THE LIKE Gabor Hegedns, 164 Stinson St, Hamitten, Ontario, Canada Filed Apr. 25, 1963, Ser. No. 275,708 1 Claim. (Ci. 24267.1)
The present invention relates to a protective covering for drawing boards and the like and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a flexible cover for a drawing board or the like and which is normally spring-held within a casing which is mounted at one end portion of the board but which may be withdrawn from the casing through a slot provided therein to extend over the top of the drawing board when the latter is not in use, as for example, at night. Manipulating the free end of the cover acts to free the spring device to again draw the cover within the casing when it is desired to utilize the drawing board or the like in conventional manner. The device is such that it keeps the drawing board or the like free of dust which might otherwise accumulate over night or at other times when the board is not in use.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and yet effective and eflicient in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel cover for drawing boards.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character set forth having novel means for storing and permitting withdrawal of a cover forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
FIGURE 1 is a botom plan view of an embodiment of the invention,
FIGURE 2 is a top plan view thereof, partly broken away, to illustrate certain details of construction,
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary perspective view of a housing forming a part of the invention,
FIGURE 4 is a fragmentary perspective view, partly broken away, of an end casing forming a part of the invention, and
FIGURE 5 is a side elevational view, partly broken away, illustrating the device in use upon a drafting board or the like.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, there is shown therein a device of the character set forth comprising an elongated tubular housing having a longitudinally extending slot 11 therein, the end portions of the housing adjacent the slot being inturned, as indicated at 12, to prevent injury to the fingers of the user and to a cover forming a part of the invention when the device is in use.
An end housing 13 is grooved, as indicated at 13a, to receive one end of the housing 10 and is integrally provided with a bracket 14 having an opening 15 therein for the reception of screws 17 whereby the same may be "ice attached to a drawing board 18, as indicated in FIGURE 5 The casing 13 is also provided with an inwardly extending lug 19 centrally apertured for the reception of a pin 20 affixed to one end of a roller 21.
The other end of the housing 10 is provided with an end casing 22 likewise having integrally formed therewith a bracket 23 apertured, as indicated at 24, for the reception of screws 17 whereby the same may be attached to the board 18.
The roller 21 is spring loaded and provided with the conventional pawl and ratchet mechanism indicated at 26 and is also provided with a slot for receiving the conventional end portion 27 of the spring mechanism.
A flexible cover 25 is afiixed at one of its ends to the roller 21 and extends outwardly through the slot 11 and its free end has mounted therein, by sewing or the like, a bar 28. A pull ring 29 is centrally fastened to the bar 28.
In operation, it will be apparent that the device may be aflixed to the underside of a drafting board 18, as indicated in FIGURE 5 and that, when it is desired to protect the board 18 and any papers which may be positioned thereon, it is only necessary to grasp the ring 19 and withdraw the cover 25 from the housing 10 against the act-ion of the spring mechanism as clearly shown in FIGURE 5. When it is desired to no longer utilize the cover, the ring 29 may be manipulated in customary manner to free the spring mechanism and allow the cover 25 to again withdraw through the slot 11 and again wind itself upon the roller as shown, for example, in FIG- URE 4.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modification-s may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A protective covering for a drawing board comprising a cylindrical housing of sheet metal having a longitudinal slot therein, inwardly turned edges of said sheet metal along each side of said slot, end casings supporting said housing at either end thereof, grooves formed in said end casings for mating engagement with said housing, a roller within said housing rotatably mounted in said casings, a spring rewind mechanism associated with said roller and one of said casings, bracket means integral with said casings for attachment to the underside of one end portion of a said board with said longitudinal slot oriented and directed downwardly, a flexible cover attached at its inner edge to said roller and extending through said slot, a bar mounted in the free edge portion of said cover, and a pull ring centrally affixed to said bar.
