Claims. (Cl. 12-12) This invention relates to shoe lasting wipers and more particularly to devices suitable for forming shoe uppers to inner soles and the like.

In order to connect upper leather parts or uppers stretched on lasts or trees to soles, for example, to inner soles, the uppers must be folded inwardly along the entire contour of the associated soles until engaged or applied against the same. It is not possible to do this in one operation by means of a simple tool.

In order to turn in the uppers on the generally planar front section of a shoe, Wipers are generally employed which consist of two pivoted parts or members whose turning edges are so shaped that their inner contour approximately corresponds to that of the associated last at its front planar section so that, upon the wipers being closed, the projecting edge of the uppers can be gripped and turned inwardly.

These planar wipers can be used only at the front planar section of shoes. They do not reach a higher level where the bottom edge of the last slopes upwardly from the plane of the front section of the sole. In this respect, wipers have been employed which are bent upwardly in said region in accordance with the shape of the last. Said wipers, however, can be used only for a specific last because the elevation (i.e., the extent to which the front edge of the last bends upwardly) is different even within a single series of lasts for different sizes.

It is an object of the present invention to provide wipers which can be used for elevations of different sizes within a specific range.

For this purpose, the invention provides that pivoted wiper sections include portions which are bent upwardly and are provided, in the region of the resulting elevation, with a plurality of closely juxtaposed leaf springs, the latter accounting, with their elasticity for differences of the elevation. The leaf springs are preferably interchangeable, so that springs of different height can be used when necessary.

Further details of the invention will become apparent from the folowing description of a preferred embodiment a illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

FIG. 1 is a side view of a last and of wipers provided in accordance with the invention;

FIG. 2 is a top view of the wipers of FIG. 1;

FIG. 3 is a sectional view through the last and the wipers along line 1-1 of FIG. 1;

FIG. 4 is an enlarged cross-section through a turning edge of the wipers; and

FIG. 5 is a top view, on enlarged scale, of a section of the spring-equipped turning edge of the wipers.

Two turning edges 12 and 13 are provided on wiper elements 1 and 2 which are connected to each other by pivot 3 and are adapted to perform a wiping movement.

The mode of action of spring 4 appears in FIG. 3.

Shoe upper 6 engaging the last 5 is pressed against the sole 7 for gluing or other method of fastening by the closing of the wipers. The elasticity of the springs accounts for change of elevation.

The mounting of springs 3 is apparent in FIGS. 4 and 5. They are each provided at the turning end with a short bent section 8 of reduced width, with which they are suspended in corresponding openings 9 in the periphery of the turning edge portions 21. The depth of the opening or recess 9 corresponds to the thickness of the leaf spring. The spring thence extends outwardly and upwardly away from the turning edge and at the outermost end, it is bent downwardly and back by more than The springs are thus preferably of hemi-cordate configuration.

The turned under end 20 is provided with a slot 10 with which the spring is engaged with the head of a rivet 11. This method of fastening or fixing the springs facilitates interchanging them.

There will now be obvious to those skilled in the art many modifications and variations of the aforedescribed structure. These modifications and variations will not depart from the scope of the invention if defined by the following claims.

What is claimed is:

l. A shoe lasting wiper comprising first and second wiper elements, means connecting said wiper elements together for pivotal movement to perform a wiping operation, said first and section elements each including a planar section and a section sloping upwardly from said planar section, a plurality of springs mounted on the sloping section of each of the wiper elements and adapted to grasp an object positioned between said first and second elements and deform the same, said sloping sections including facing edge portions, and springs being hemicordate shaped leaf springs extending substantially perpendicular to the edge portions and in edgewise abutting relation, each spring including a first end constituted of a na row bent section releasably secured to the edge portion of the associated wiper element and a second end constituted by a wide turned under end portion which is detachably secured to the associated wiper element whereby each spring is normally secured to the respective wiper element at both ends and is detachable for replacement.

2. A wiper as claimed in claim 1 wherein said edge portions are provided with notches in which said springs are secured.

3. A wiper as claimed in claim 2 wherein said notches have a depth about equal to the thickness of said springs.

4. A wiper as claimed in claim 3 comprising rivets on said sloping sections in correspondence with said springs, said turned under end portions of the springs being provided with slots wherewith to engage said rivets.

5. A wiper as claimed in claim 4 wherein said first and second elements are provided with slots separating the planar and sloping sections.

Claims

1. A SHOE LASTING WIPER COMPRISING FIRST AND SECOND WIPER ELEMENTS, MEANS CONNECTING SAID WIPER ELEMENTS TOGETHER FOR PIVOTAL MOVEMENT TO PERFORM A WIPING OPERATION, SAID FIRST AND SECTIOLN ELEMENTS EACH INCLUDING A PLANAR SECTION AND A SECTION SLOPING UPWARDLY FROM SAID PLANAR SECTION, A PLURALITY OF SPRINGS MOUNTED ON THE SLOPING SECTION OF EACH OF THE WIPER ELEMENTS AND ADAPTED TO GRASP AN OBJECT POSITIONED BETWEEN SAID FIRST AND SECOND ELEMENTS AND DEFORM THE SAME, SAID SLOPING SECTIONS INCLUDING FACING EDGE PORTIONS, AND SPRINGS BEING HEMICORDATE SHAPED LEAF SPRINGS EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY PERPENDICULAR TO THE EDGE PORTIONS AND IN EDGEWISE ABUTTING RELATION, EACH SPRING INCLUDING A FIRST END CONSTITUTED OF A NARROW BENT SECTION RELEASABLY SECURED TO THE EDGE PORTION OF THE ASSOCIATED WIPER ELEMENT AND A SECOND END CONSTITUTED BY A WIDE TURNED UNDER END PORTION WHICH IS DETACHABLY SECURED TO THE ASSOCIATED WIPER ELEMENT WHEREBY EACH SPRING IS NORMALLY SECURED TO THE RESPECTIVE WIPER ELEMENT AT BOTH ENDS AND IS DETACHABLE FOR REPLACEMENT.
