UNITED STATES PATENT OEErcE.
SOPHRONIA T. LEWIS, OF \VATERTOlVN, NEW YORK.
DRESS-CHART.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,986, dated July 14,1885.
(N0 model.)
To all whom it nury concern:
Be it known that I, SOPHRONIA T. LEwIs, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVatertown, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented a new and useful DressOhart, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to pattern-charts or combination-squares used in drafting patterns of ladies and childrens garments, or any garment that may be made by taking measures of the waist and sleeve; and it has for its object to produce a pattern-chart or combination-square by which the drafting may be done, at the same time saving time and study in cutting perfectly-fitting garments, the tables on the chart being simple and the chart or square being of a convenient size for handling; and the invention consists in the novel pattern-chart or combination-square hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improved combination-square, showing the tables for the waist and bust measureswaist-1ine, center-back, side-body, gore, back-neck, and dart tables. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the other side of the combinationsquare, showing the frontneck and sleeve tables; Fig. 3, aplan of the draft of the front of a garment. Fig. 4 is a draft of the center back. Fig. 5 is a draft of the side body. Fig. 6 is a draft for the gore. Fig. 7 is a draft of front with one dart. Fig. 8 is a draft of plain back. Fig. 9 is a draft for childrens garments. Figs. 10 and 11 (marked Diagram 1, Diagram 2) are drafts of the back, with seam to the shoulder. Fig. 12 is a draft of a common sleeve; Fig. 13, a draft of a gathered sleeve; Fig. 14, a draft of under part for gathered sleeve; Fig. 15,,(lraft of yoke without a seam.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, S designates my improved patternchart or combination-square, which is twelve inches long byfive inches Wide at one end,
and two and one-half inches wide at the other end. Its straight edges are graduated into inches and fractions of inches. The curved slotV is also provided with a graduated scale at its inner edge on one of its faces, marked Front Neck, and having dots numbered from 1 to 20, as shown in Fig. On one face of tie combination-square is provided the frontbust scale, which has the A corner and the E corner marked, and is divided into one-eighth inch gradations, and at the tonr-and-one-halfinch mark is marked with the number 20, which is the commencement of a series terminating in' the number 50, arranged onefourth inch apart. The five-inch edge on this face is provided with the back-neck scale, which is graded-into inches, one-fourth inch, and one-tenth inch, and mark tenths. The other end is also graduated into one-eighth inches. This face of the combination-square is provided with a table for the waist-lines marked \Vaist Lines thereon, and comprises the center-back table, side-body table, and gore table, located along the twelveinch rule. Above these and parallel therewith is another table, marked Bust and Vaist Measures. Above this latter table and parallel therewith is a double-oolu mn table, marked Dart Table at the left end, across the end, and marked Index Fig. in the upper col umn, and Dart-s in the lower one of these two columns of figures and fractions. On this face of the combinationsquare at the one-inch mark the letter F appears. At the point nearest the curve portion V is printed the letter D, and on the curved portion V are printed the letters X and Y and the mark 11, located at the points shown. On
the other face of the combination the square is provided with the B corner, G corner, and K corner. The point -D also appears on this face, and a point, C, at the end of the curve in line with the half-inch mark on the five-inch scale. The two-and-onehalf-inch scale also appears on the short end of the square on this face. The twelve-inch edge is provided with a scale of one-eighth inch, numbered from 20 to 50, commencing at the three-and-seven-eighths -inch mark, and is marked Back Bust. The frontneck scale on this face has already been described. The sleeve-table is printed or otherwise made on this face, and is marked at the left Sleeve Table. The columns of figures which compose the sleeve-table run parallel with each other and in the direction of the length of the square. The upper column of the sleeve-table is marked Armseye Meastoo i ures, and contains the numbers constituting the table for said measures. The columns next below are marked Common Sleeve above them. Across them at the left of the figures constituting the table is the word Upper. and near this word are the abbreviations T.S. and the wort Line, whieh, when construed, means Top Sleeve-Line. Immediately under the letter T. appear the letter E. and the ditto-murks-thus E. -whieh is read Elbow Line. The columns next below have the letters T. S. and E., and the dittomurks, and the crossword Under with the table for the under part of the common sleeve. Below the table for the common sleeve are the tables for the guthered elbow, marked Gathered Elbow, having the words Upper and Under, and the abbreviations "T. S. and E, and the ditto-marks arranged us those in the columns directly above. To the left of the tables just described are the tables for the wrist-measures of the common sleeve and gathered elbow, marked \Vrist Measures, Common Sleeve, Uppefland Under, and Gathered Elbow, Upper, and Under.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
