Description

(No Model.)
' J. A. TURNBULL.
ROLLER SKATE.
'No.321,261'. I PatentedJune so, 1885.
v FIG! UNITED STATES PATENT Urricn.
J AMES A. TURNBULL, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
ROLLER-SKATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 321,261, dated June 30, 1885.
Application filed February 20, 1885. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES A. TURNBULL, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Roller-Skates, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention consists in the combination, with a roller-skate, of a brake adapted to be applied to the roller or rollers by means of a lever having its free end projecting from the skate in such a manner as to allow said lever to be operated by the companion skate, all as hereinafter more fully described, and specifically set forth in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, Figures 1 and 3 are side views of the heel portions of rollerskates, showing the application of my invention to a double-roller and a single-roller skate, respectively. Figs. 2 and at are transverse sections of the same, taken in front of the hind-roller frame. Fig. 5 illustrates modifications of the invention, and Fig. 6 illustrates further modifications, drawn on a re duced scale, and Fig. 7 illustrates the operaation of my invention.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
R R represent the hind rollers pivoted on the roller-frame F, which may be of any suitable and well-known form, secured to the heel portion of the foot-plate A.
L denotes a brake-lever, which is to be pivoted in any suitable manner eccentrically in relation to the axes of the aforesaid rollers,
and is to have its free end projecting from the skate either at the side or end, though, preferably, at the end of the skate, as shown in the annexed drawings, so as to allow said lever to be operated by the companion skate, as illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings. I prefer to fulcrum the lever L on arms a a, which may either project forward from the axle portion of the roller-frame, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 5 of the drawings, or project rearward, as represented in Fig. 6 of the drawings.
The lever is extended from its fulcrum rearward, and thence upward, and terminates, with
a step, I), back of the heel of the skate and at a double-roller skate the lever L is arranged between the rollers, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. In a single-roller skate the lever is to be bifurcated to reach across the ends of the roller, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Furthermore, the aforesaid lever may be either provided with arms 0 0, extending from the fulcrum of the lever, to the free ends of which arms the brake-shoe d is attached, as illustrated in Figs. 1, 3, and 6 of the drawings; or the brake-lever may be bifurcated and extended over the tread'of the rollers, and have secured directly to it the brake-shoe d, as represented in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
Either of the described arrangements permits of applying the brake to the rollers of one skate by pressing on the free end of the brake-lever with the companion skate, as illustrated in Fig. 7 of the drawings, and such operation of the skates is easily and readily accomplished by a skater of ordinary skill.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a roller skate, the combination, with the rollers, of a brake-lever projecting from the skate and terminating with a step, to receive the pressure from the companion skate,
as set forth.
2. The combination, with a roller-skate, of a lever pivoted eccentrically in relation to the axes of the hind rollers, and its free end extended to the rear of the skate and terminating with a step, I), back of the heel of the skate, and brake-shoes connected with and actuated by said lever substantially in the manner described and shown.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name and affixed my seal, in the presence of two attesting witnesses, at Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, this 14th day of February, 1885.
JAMES A. TURNBULL. [L. s.]
