Description

Sept. 28, 1965 M. B. BLISH DISPLAY PACKAGE Filed Oct. 22, 1963 United States Patent 3,208,590 DISPLAY PACKAGE Matthew B. Blish, Box 151, Oak Park, Ill. Filed Oct. 22, 1963, Ser. No. 317,936 2 Claims. ('Cl. 206--80) This invention relates to display packaging of commodities and more particularly to the packaging of threedimensional articles of merchandise in a manner which enables the packaged articles to be readily displayed for retail marketing.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved display package in which the article of merchandise is displayed upon a stiff backing sheet by a novel pliable banding means and attractively presented for point-ofpurchase viewing and consumer shopping convenience.
A further object of the invention is to provide a display pack-age of this type which is simple in construction and economical to manufacture.
Other object-s and advantages of the present invention will be apparent from the detailed description taken in conjunction wit-h the accompanying drawings which form a part thereof and illustrate preferred embodiments of the invention, in which:
FIG. 1 is a front face plan view of a completed formation of the package as provided by the invention and indicating the packaged merchandise in broken lines.
FIG. 2 is a side view of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is a rear face fragmentary view of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a top end view of FIG. 1.
FIG. 5 is a front face perspective view illustrating another form of the package.
FIG. 6 is a rear face perspective view of FIG. 5.
FIG. 7 is a front face fragmentary plan view of a further form of the package.
FIG. 8 is a rear face view of FIG. 7.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawings in which similarly numbered characters of reference indicate corresponding parts of the various views, the numeral 10 denotes the package backing sheet, formed of relatively stiff stock such as paperboard or similar thin, semirigid material, having an integrally formed flap portion 11 which is separated from the main body of the backing sheet by cut lines 12, 13 and 14 which extend entirely through the backing sheet. The flap portion is integrally based to the main body of the backing sheet at one end which is preferably the bot-tom end of the flap portion and the remaining free edges providing inward and outward swinging rn-ovability for the main body of the flap portion prior to assembling the completed package. The numeral 15 denotes the package band member which may be of thin pliable material, plastic film, paper, cloth, or the like, of a narrow Width sufficiently wide to retain the article 16 to be packaged.
In the preferred embodiments of the invention shown throughout the drawings the band member is of elongate rectangular formation, of lesser dimensional width than the height of the article to be packaged and slightly narrower than the length of cut lines 12 and 14, and of sufficient length to tightly encompass the sides and front of the article so that the opposing ends 17 and 18 of the band member may be inserted through the cut lines 12 and 14 respectively, then folded over the rear face side of the package and secured thereto.
When employing a strip of transparent plastic film material for use as the band member 15, I have found that the material can be quickly and easily applied in the package assembly of the present invention by swinging the main body of the flap portion 11 slightly outward away from the backing sheet rear face side and then inserting the transverse central portion 20 of the band member between the front face side of the flap portion and the rear face side of the backing sheet so that the two opposing ends of the band member extend outwardly of the longitudinal axis of the flap portion. Upon then swinging the flap portion slightly outward away from the front face side of the backing sheet, the transverse central portion of the band member is brought forward beyond the surface of the backing sheet front face side and can then be easily pulled further forward to form an outwardly extended loop formation of the desired size while swinging the flap portion back to its normal position level with the backing sheet so that the rear face side of the flap portion is disposed flush with the rear face side of the backing sheet. The article to be packaged is then placed within the formed loop and the band member ends are drawn taut causing the main body of the band member to tightly encompass the sides and front of the artcile. The packaged article is thus retained tightly adjacent the backing sheet front face side and the band member ends are then folded over the rear face side of the backing sheet or the rear face side of the flap portion and adhesively secured thereto. A flap portion retaining member 19 formed of sheet material slightly wider than the flap portion width is bonded over the flap portion at the rear face side of the backing sheet as shown in FIGS. 2, 3 and 4.
Although means for securing the band member ends indicate the employment of adhesive, any suitable securing means such as heat sealing or mechanical fastening for example, may be used for securing the band member ends or the flap portion retaining member.
A variation of the package of this invention is brought forth in FIGS. 5 and 6 wherein the flap portion retaining member is integrally formed of the flap portion adjacent its peripheral end edge. The flap portion retaining member having cut out peripheral side edges and a cut out peripherial end edge and based to the flap portion so that the flap portion retaining member can be folded over the peripherial end edge of the flap portion from the rear face side of the flap portion and extending in face-to-face relation with a portion of the rear face side of the backing sheet adjacent the peripheral end edge of the flap portion when the flap portion is disposed normally level with the backing sheet. The thus folded over flap portion retaining member is then bonded to the said portion of the rear face side of the backing sheet securing the flap portion rear face side disposed flush with the rear face side of the backing sheet as shown in FIG. 6.
FIGS. 7 and 8 disclose another variation of the novel structure of the package of the present invention embodying means conveniently retaining the fla portion and integrally formed of the backing sheet. The backing sheet illustrated in FIGS. 7 and 8 has formed therein an integral flap portion retaining member having cut out peripheral side edges and a cut out peripheral end edge and based to the backing sheet adjacent the peripheral end edge of the flap portion when the flap portion is disposed normally level with the backing sheet so that the flap portion retaining member can be folded over the peripheral end edge of the flap portion and extending in face-to-face relation with a portion of the rear face of the flap portion adjacent the peripheral end edge of the flap portion when the flap portion is disposed normally level with the backing sheet. The thus folded over flap portion retaining member is then bonded to the said portion of the rear face of the flap portion securing the flap portion rear face side disposed flush with the rear face side of the backing sheet as shown in FIG. 8.
Upon drawing the band member ends through the cut lines, they may be selectively folded over the rear face of the backing sheet, or folded over the rear face of the flap portion and secured thereto, or they may be overlapped a) one end bonded over the other around the flap portion rear face side as shown in FIG. 8. The band member width may be formed to reach or exceed the full dimensional height of the article to be packaged, depending upon the size and shape of the article to be packaged provided the band member ends are insertable through the cut lines.
While preferred embodiments of the invention are described herein and shown in the accompanying drawings in detail, other arrangements may be produced without departing from the scope and spirit of the invention. It is to be understood that all matter contained in the foregoing descriptions or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense; that certain changes from the exact shapes or constructions shown, or materials described, and fully comprebonded by the spirit of the invention may be made without affecting the scope and spirit of the invention as hereinafter described.
