WILLIAM M. KINNARD, OF DAYTON, OHIO.
INDEX-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,798, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed May 19, 1884.
To 41. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. KINNARD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Dayton, county of Montgomery, and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new'and usefullmprovement in lndex Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an index-book, and particularly that class which are used to index names of persons.
The object of my invention is to provide an index in which the surname can be readily found by index-letters which can be read from both sides, forward or backward, so as to facilitate the ready finding of any name, no matter where theindex-book is opened.
Figure 1 represents a plane View of my improved index-book. Fig. 2 represents a plane View with the same opened near the middle. Fig. 3 represents a plane view of a single leaf.
1 represents a tab on which is printed in this instance the letter M, for indexing names commencing with M.
The letters A B O, &c., on page 7, indicate spaces for entering names-for instance, names like Mandell, Malloy, 8m, would be entered upon the upper space. These letters A B G are indicated by tabs, or letters printed or pasted upon the extreme upper left corner on the left-hand leaf, and on the right-hand page the same letters A B G are placed one space below those upon the lefthand corner, and it and all the remaining leaves in the book are slotted out above the space opposite the letters A B G on the left-hand page, so that whenever the book is opened back of that point the letters A B O on the left upperhand corner are exposed to view and the book 0 may be readily turned to that point by clasp- (ModeL) ing the thumb upon the letters A B C with the cover of the book and opening it to that point. The next index letters, 0 D E, would be printed in a similar manner on the space below on the left-hand corner or side, and the same letters on the space below on the righthand side and all the ren'iaining leaves of the book above the letters 0 D E are slotted out, so that the letters are exposed no matter where the book is opened. For instance, the letters 0 D E on the lefthand page are in view as the leaves are turned over toward the back, and the letters 0 D E on the right-hand page are exposed to view from the front or rear to the desired point.
The method of indexing and opening is accomplished by having the letters upon the left hand page one space abovethose upon the right-hand page, and all the leaves above these respective letters, respectively slotted on one side and the other, so as to expose the same to view from the front and the back as the book is turned or opened. When the book is indexed in this manner, it can be instantly opened to the desired name when the book is closed or opened.
The cover or iiy-leaves may be slotted or not, as desired.
I claim- A11 index-book having an index-letter upon a tab, 1, and like index-letters upon the left and right hand sheets, with the remaining leaves of the book slotted upon each side, so as to expose said letters to view, substantially as setforth and specified.
