SHEATHING FOR BUILDINGS.
SECEFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,757, dated June 23, 1885.

Be it known that I, DENIsoN S. GHEsEBRo, of Geddes, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sheathing for Build ings, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.
rlhis invention consists in a novel construction of a metallic sheathing forming an article of merchandise, which can be conveniently packed for transportation, and is supplied to the trade in a condition which admits of a ready application of said sheathing to the exterior of buildings.
The invention is fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a partial end elevation of a building with my improved sheathing in process of being applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the sheathing, showing its application to a building. Figs. 3 and4t are detached face views ofthe sheathing as formed for different parts of the building, and Figs. 5 and 6 are horizontal transverse sections of the sheathing, showing it with and without apacking between its component sheets or plates.

My improved sheathing is composed of two thicknesses of sheet metal formed with channels between them, the back plate, a, being plain and straight, and the front plate, b, being corrugated to forni the channels c c between it and the back plate, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings. Said sheathing I manufacture in sections of convenient sizes for handling and transportation. The back plate, a, is made wider and higher than the front plate, I), so as to project beyond one of the side edges and the top edge of said front plate, as represented at c c in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, and the bottom edge of the front plate is made to project below-the bottoni edge of the back plate, for the purpose hereinafter explained.
In applying my improved sheathing to a` building, the back plates of the successive sections of the sheathing are lapped onto the projecting portions e c of the preceding sec- 5o tions, and the bottom of the front plate of the former laps onto the top of the front plate ot' the latter, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 ot' the drawings, the building heilig previously covered with boards B I3, onto which the sheathing is to be fastened by nails or screws driven through the overlapping portions of the sections of sheathing.
The described sheathing may be applied with its corrugatious running either horizon- 6o tally or vertically, and in hot .climates the channels between the `corrugated front plate and the back plate may be left open at the bottom and top of the building, so as to admit of circulation of air between said plates. In cold climates the aforesaid channels may be closed at the bottom and filled either with lime or sawdust or other suitablepacking, as represented in Fig. 6 ofthe drawings. y
IIaving described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
