UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT W. BARTHOLOMEIV, OF MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
AXLE-TOOL.
SPECIFICATIQN forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,748, dated June 23, 1885.
Application filed August 6, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT W. BAErHoLo Mnw, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Axle- Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in axle-tools,whereby any form or size of metallic axles maybe speedily and properly repaired or altered. It is often found that the axles of vehicles become after a time so much worn as to cause the wheels to rattle on the axles, necessitating the use of washers between the hub of the wheel and the axle-nut; but a better and'more effectual way-is to turn up a new shoulder and to cut a new thread to correspond, and also, if necessary, to cut off a portion of the end of the axle.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and eifective tool for this purpose, and one easily managed by artisans who are required to do such work. This I do by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, Fig. 2 a front elevation, and Fig. 3a rear elevation, of the tool.
A represents the stock or body of the tool, having a recess, E, Fig. 2, for the purpose of receiving a movable tool-block, B, and also a recess in the rear F, Fig. 1, for the purpose of receiving a pair of screw-cutting dies, D D.
h is a cuttingtoo], of steel, secured in the tool-block B by means of the movable clamp or strap 9 and screws 76 k.
H is a stand attached to the stock A for the purpose of supporting the yokef.
m m are check-nuts to secure the stock to the axle when the cutting-tool l1v is being used.
K K are stands attached to the stock A for the purpose of supporting the yoke J and movable clamp O and check-nuts a a.
O is a feed-rod passing through a bearing, q, and secured to the tool'block B by means of the collar .9 and nut t.
p is a nut with inside screw to receive the feed-screw on the rod 0.
ing the feed-screw C.
d is a feed-screw with milled head b passing through the bearings '16 and 'w.
r is aunt-bearing to regulate the feed or cut of the dies D D.
Similar letters refer to similar parts th roughout the several views.
The manner of using the device is as follows: \Vhen an axle is to be repaired by turning up a new shoulder, the device is attached to the work by slipping the same over the end of the axle, with the cutting-tool 71. toward the old shoulder of the same. The yoke Jand movable clamp O are then brought to bear on the body of said axle and secured in place by means of the check-nuts n n. The whole body of the stock is now made to revolve around the work by means of the small part of the body of the stock, which may he of any desired length. Thus by means of the feedscrew 0 and cutter h the required amount of metal can be removed and a new shoulder formed. N ow reverse the device, bringing the rear side holding the dies D D toward the shoulder, and secure the same loosely by means of the yoke f and check-nuts m m, and bring the dies D D down to the work, regulating the cut by means of the feedscrew d, and cut the screw up to the new shoulder by rotating the device in the same manner as when using the cuttingtool. If it is desired to cut off the end of the axle, that can be done while the tool is in the latter position by feeding down the cuttingtool h as may be required.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an axle-tool, the combination of stock A, provided with a guide-recess for the toolblock, and an adjustable guide'yoke, J, with tool-block B, cutter h, and feed-screw 0, substantially as described.
2. In an axle-tool, the combination of stock A, provided with a recess for the dies, the dies D D, the latter provided with means for adjustment, and the yoke f, substantially as set forth.
ALBERT \V. BARTHOLOMEV.
