JOHN ILLINGWVORTH, OF NINVARK, NEV JERSEY.
MOLD FOR CASTING INGOTS OF ALTERNATE LAYERS OF METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,560, dated June 23, 1885.
" A lication filed Ma -ch17, 18M. (Nomodch) To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN ILLINGWORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New ark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds for Casting Ingots of Alternating Layers of Metal; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the process of producing ingots of alternating layers of hard and soft steel or other metals, and to reduce the cost of the same.
It consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally be embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, embodied in two sheets, in which similar letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device, partially in section, to show the interna lconstruction thereof. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, showing the center formed in elevation, the base partly in section, the left mold in elevation with its cover on,
'and the right mold in section with its cover off, and with the metal plates and plate-holders in section. Fig. 3 is avertical section taken through line 00, and Fig. 4 is a detail plan of the foundation-piece. V
In carrying out the invention I form the mold of several detachable sections, preferably of cast-iron, of which a is the base, having therein grooves or passages 72, leading from a central funnel, c, to one or more upright ingot-molds or plate-receptacles. Said grooves are lined and covered with suitable fire-bricks, Z) Z), the covering-brick being removable.
The ingot-molds or plate-receptacles d are formed of foundation-pieces e and hollow uprights h. The foundation pieces e are provided with inclined inner sides, f, and wedgeshaped projections 9, adapted to separate the lower extremities of the steel plates h when thelatter are dropped into the said molds,
and to hold them at suitable distances apart and from the side walls of the receptacles, as will. be understood upon reference to Fig. 1. Upon the foundation-pieces c are placed the hollow uprights or molds h, which app'roximate the length of the plates h.
In casting the ingots, which areto be of alternating layers of differing metal, I place the metallic plates or bars h longitudinally in the vertical receptacles, the lower ends being separated in the lowering process by the wedgeshaped projections g, and brought to a proper distance from the wall of the receptacle by the inclined side surfaces, Said lower extremitiesrest on suitable ledges or shoulders, j, and are thereby held up into proper relative position in the receptacle to allow the molten metal coming up through the passages 11 to pass around on all sides of the plate or plates h. plates are correspondingly held apart and from the walls of the receptacle by notched cross-strips l and side wedges, m, as shown in Fig. 3, or by any other suitable means.
The receptacles are provided with a cover, a, to close the mouth thereof. Said covers are supported by the notched strips Z and m, which hold the covers, and the plates h fit loosely, so as to allow the plate'chambers to be vented.
The funnel 0 may be lined with tubular tile or fire-brick s.
In operation the plates h are heated, so as not to chill the molten metal, and placed in position in the receptacle, after which the molten metal is poured through the funnel 0 and passes through the passage b, entering the receptacles a, and filling the spaces around and between the plates 72, the plates and cast metal forming, whencool, an ingot of alternating layers.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown, as numerous changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
\Vhen the metal is hardened, the portion (1 is drawn off by a suitable crane or othertackling, handles or means 1) being provided to receive said tackling.
The upper extremities of the said substantially as and for the purposes set forth;
The combination of afunnel, one or more ingot-molds, one or more metal plates in each mold, and a passage extending from the funnel to each mold or plate-receptacle, and to a position under the plate or plates therein, whereby the metal passes beneath and upward] y on both sides of the plate or plates, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. In a mold for casting ingots of alternating layers of metal, a plate-receptacle having ledges j, inclines f, and guides g,arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
5. In combination, the base having passages therein, the funnel, the uprights h, and foundation-pieces 6, provided with wedge-shaped projections, all said parts being arranged and operating substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of March, 188-1.
JOHN ILLINGWORTH.
\Vitnesses:
CHARLES H. PELL, ED\VARD G. KEMPF.
