EARTH SCAPER AND ELEVATOR.
.SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,553, dated June 23,1885.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, J OOHIM H. HAMAN and CHRISTIAN HAMAN, of Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carrier-Excavators; and we hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of a machine embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a side elevation taken from the side opposite to that shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a rear elevation. Fig. 5 is a front elevation. Fig. 6 is a detailview showing the rear axle in section, the inner face of one of the driving-wheels, one of the springactuated pawls, and one of the ratchets. Fig. 7 is a detail view.
Our invention has relation to carrier-excavators designed for excavating and ditching; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the frame of the elevator. This frame is provided near its rear end with drive-wheels B B, having traction-pins in their peripheries. The front axle is pro- Vided with a tongue by which the machine is to be drawn, and a rack, G, extends upwardly from the front axle through the front cross beam of the frame and engages a pinion supported in bearings rising from the front of the frame; and a crank, double pawls,and double ratehets are employed to hold the front end of the frame to its adjustments,which are vertical, and are intended to regulate the depth of the cut of the scraper. An adjustable rotary cutter, E, is suspended in thelower ends of rack-arms F, working vertically in bearings F, secured to theinner faces of the side beams of the mainframemear the forward end of the same, and engaging pinions F on a shaft Fflprovided with acrank, Fiat one end. These rack-arms F are perforated and held to their adjustments by set-screws F An adjustable scraper, G, provided with parallel shares G, is connected to the lower ends of inverted-u form frames H, the parallel arms of which are perforated and secured in bean ings Hby thumb-screwsH Middle rack-bars, H, connect the shares of the scraper with the curves of the U-form frames, and inclined braces H" connect the arms of the U-frames and the rack-bars intermediate of the arms of the inverted-U frames at the sides of the vertically-adjustable scraper. Pivoted arms H connect the inclined braces H with the staychains H, which are in turn connected to a transverse shaft, H secured in bearings at the sides of the main frame near its forward end. This transverse shaft, H, is provided with ratchets and detents H near each end inside of the framing, which prevent backward rotation of said shaft H when the ratchets and detents are in engagement, and a crank common to the several transverse shafts is employed to turn this shaft H to regulatethe tension on the chains H H. The transverse shafts employed in this construction are provided with crank handles to effect the necessary adjustment of the parts. The driving-wheels B B are mounted on the rear shaft, B, and are provided with half-clutches B", with ratchet-teeth on their peripheries, which are engaged by spring-pressed detents B to permit backward movement of the driving wheels B B when the halfclutches B B are in engagement with the sliding halfclutches B on the axle B. The sliding halfclutches B are provided with peripheral grooves, which are engaged by forks B at the upper ends of spring-actuated levers B fulcrumed to the lower ends of hangers B depending from the lower halves of the boxes B, which support the shaft B. Beneath the boxes B and fulcrumed on the hangers B are anglelevers B, the rear arms of which are connected by wire rods B to the arms of the spring-actuatedlevers B The front arms of the angle-levers B are connected by wires G to angle-levers O, fulcrumed to the frame of the machine in front of the inverted- U frames. The angle-levers O are connected to each other by a transverse rod, G, and one of the'angle-levers, G, is connected to a lever, 0 by a rod, 0*, said lever 0 having a detent-lever, G which engages an arc rack, 0 toothed in the lower edge of its arc, and
holds the clutch mechanism out of engagement when desired. The axle B is provided with two spur gearwheels, D D, inside the side rails of the main frame. The gear-wheels D D engage pinions D D", in front of them, on a transverse shaft D", having hearings in hangers D D depending from the inner faces of the side rails of the frame. Just outside of the pinions D D the transverse shaft D is provided with sprocket-wheels D D, which are connected by sprocket-chains D D with the outer sprocket-wheels, DTD on the lower shaft, D of the endless elevator E. The lower shaft, D of the elevator E is'also provided with sprocket -wheels D D and sprocketchains connected by the buckets D to form the elevator E. The frame F of the elevator E inclines upwardly and rearwardly for a portion of its length, its arms F being slotted and extended vertically. The frame G of the elevator E is provided with bearings for the upper shaft, G, which latter is also provided with sprocket-wheels G and the ends of the shaft G project through the slots G in the frame F. This arrangement permits an adjustment of the elevator E, which has its bearings in the forward ends of arc rack X, working in guides X, secured to the inner faces of the side rails of the frame directly opposite the lower end of the elevator E. The teeth of the arc rack X engage pinions X X and the pinions X X engage pinions X X" on the transverse shaft X5, having bearings X X immediately in front of the elevator E. The transverse shaft is provided with ratchetwheels X)? near its pinions X X", and these ratchet-wheels X X are engaged by springpressed pawls X X which prevents backward movement of the shaft In the rear of the elevator E, in bearings rising above the side timbers of the frame 01 the machine, is journaled a transverse shaft, I, which is provided with a pinion, I, which engages a pinion, 1 beneath it on a short shaft, 1", extending inwardly from a shoulder on the side beam of the frame, and the pinion 1 engages the gear-wheel on the driving-shaft beneath it. On the end ofthe transverse shaft I, just inside of its bearing, is a miter-gear, I, which engages a miter-gear, J, on the front end of the longitudinally-disposed lower shaft,
J, of the side carrier, J which is located at the rear of the frame and transversely of the frame. The upper and lower shafts of the side carrier are also provided with sprocketwheels, and its buckets connect sprocketchains which run over the sprocket-wheels. The side carrier is made in two sections, K and K, hinged together, and the upper section, K, is provided with hangers which support a roller, K which prevents sagging of the under portion of the endless carrier. The upper section, K, of the endless carrier is provided with a hinged bail, K and with angular stops K, which prevent the hail from interfering with the buckets of said carrier. The bail K is provided with an eye at its middle, and to this eye is connected a rope, L, which extends over a pulley, L, in a strapguide, L at the upper end of a standard at the rear right corner of the frame, and runs down and connects with a winch near the lower end of the standard. 7 The winch is provided with a ratchet and pawl to prevent accidental backward movement of the same. The lower section of the side carrier is suitably braced, while the upper section may be raised and lowered or turned on its hinges to change its inclination, as may be required in operating the machine,in the ditch to properly discharge the dirt at the side of the ditch as it becomes deeper.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with the main frame provided with the bearings F" and set-screws E of the rotary cutter E, the raek-arms F, and the shaft F provided with the crank E, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the frame A, provided with the bearings H, of the scraper G, the inverted- U frames H, with perforated parallel arms,thumb-screws H middle rack-bars, H", inclined braces H, pivoted arms H staychains H, and the transverse shaft H, with ratchets and detents H substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with the frame A, provided with the endless elevator E, and mechanism, substantially as described, for operating said elevator E, of the hinged side carrier provided with the supportingroller K the bail K rope L, pulley and strap guide on the corner standard, and the winch, pawl, and ratchet for operating the rope, substantially as specified.
4. The combination of the main frame, the endless elevator E, the elevator-frame F having vertical slotted arms, curved racks hinged to the lower end of the elevator-frame Gr, guides in the main frame for the curved racks, and gears moving the curved racks and raising or lowering the elevator, substantially as described.
