To LLZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, WILLIAM F. MAULICK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Columbia, in the county ot' Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Incubators; and I do hereby declare the following to be afnll, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters oriigures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention consists in certain new and useful improvements in incubators, as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved incubator. A represents a suitable case, which is mounted on legs, and provided in its top or upper side with a ventilator, a, and in its lower part ot' its opposite side with openin gs a, above which on one of its sides are hinged the doors B, which may have panels of glass. This case is provided centrally with a transverse partition, which divides the same into two parts and provides a place to attach the shelf-holding means. The openings c are covered and uncovered by a rectangular slide, U, which is constructed as shown in Fin'. 7, and consists of the end pieee,c, and the side pieces,c,at right angles thereto, which have slots or openings, 0 and are heldin position by the diagonal brace-rods c. At the point ofj nnction of these brace-rods a plate, c, is provided, against which bears the end of a screw-threaded rod, d, which passes through a screw-threaded block, d', secured to the outer side of the case. This screw-threaded rod is provided atits outer end Fig. 3 is a detail perspec' with acrank-handle, d. The slide() is secured within the case, so that by turning the crankhandle d its slots or openings maybe brought opposite the openings a in the case and admit more or less air, as desired.
The heating apparatus consists otl an upper rectangular tank, D, of substantially the same size as the inner portion of the case A, and the saine is provided with an outlet-pipe, c, which extends through thetop of the case. This tank is provided at opposite ends with pipes E Ef, which connect the saine with a second hollow rectangular tank, F, the inner edges otl which are curved, as shown in Fig. 2. A vertical pipe, G, extends up and enters the tank D at each side at or about the center thereof, as fully shown in Fig. 2. After each pipe Gr enters the said tank it terminates in two diverging branches, C.
To the lower vertical ends ot' the pipes G is secured a horizontal pipe having a T-conneetion, g, by lneans ot' which it is attached to the upper part of the boiler II. The afore said boiler is also connected to the tank F by means of pipes I, as shown. The boiler H is made in two sections, lt h', the lower section, h', being provided with a central line, while the upper part is connected thereto by short tubes, It, as shown. The upper section, h, terininates in a cone, at the apex otl which the lower end of the 'T-joint g is attached.
The circulation ofthe water in the tanks and boiler is indicated by arrows, and when the devices are in operation the tanks should be completely tilled.
The lamp or heating device K is supported upon an adjustable shelf, K', which is suspended under the boiler ll by rods K", which are connected to each other at their lower portions by a spider, K, having a central perforation. The shelt' K is provided with perforations, through which pass the rods K'", and has attached at its central under portion an indented or perforated rod, L, which rod passes through the central perforation in the spider, and can be retained in different vertical positions by a set-screw. By means ot' this adjustable shelf the lamp can be raised or lowered.
Between the upper and lower sections of the boiler h h is secured a perforated band, M, which serves to retain the heat between the IOO partition therein are secured castings N,l
which have on their sides, adjacent to the walls,
rack bars or projections a, with which en gagel castings N. These castings are provided on one edge with a ange, n', to lit the recess s of the shelves S, and on the opposite side with hooks m, which engage with a rack of the casting N, thus forming a support for the shelves. rlhc castings N' are provided with a hook m', which may engage with the edges ot' the casting N to prevent the same being withdrawn. The hook m' will always be held against the'casting N when the shelves are with in the case.
By means of the hooks m and rack-bars n the shelf-supporting casting N' may be adjusted to dilerent heights within the casiu g.
rlhe shelves S consist of a rectangular framework, two edges of which are provided with recesses s, and on its under side with boxes or frames S', which contain a series of suitably .journaled sprocket-wheels, It. Theframe is covered with wire-cloth, in which is cut a serpentine passage, r, between which passages are secured vertical guides r'. The chain T passes over the spockct-wheels It, and is provided at suitable intervals with upwardlyprojecting carriers t, with concave ends, which project through the passage r in the wirecloth. The shaft of one ofthe sprocket-wheels ot' each tray depends su tliciently to permit the formation thereof into an operatin g crankhandle, R', as fully seen in Fig. 6.
The operation of my invention is asfollows When the tanks and boiler have been filled with water, which is heated by the lamp, a constant circulation will be maintained, and the water, as it rises through the pipes G, will be distributed at different points wit-hin the tank D, so that the whole of the same will be kept at an equal temperature and an equal degree of heat will be maintained within the case. When theendless chain T is moved,it will carry with it the eggs, which are placed upon-the shelf on their sides, and will turn the eggs as the chain is moved forward. The guides r' and curved carriers willprevent the eggs being moved from the groove.
I claim- 1. The combination, in an incubator, of the upper tank, D, the lower tank, F, the burner H, having upper and lower sections, h h' with connecting-tubes h", centralilue for the lamp, and perforated band M between the sections, and pipes E E I G, the latter entering the upper tank and terminating in divergin g pipes or .branches G', substantially set forth.
2L The combination, in an incubator, of a case or receptacle provided with a series of openings on opposite sides extending horizontally, a rectangular slide having a series of slots, as described, and adapted to cover and uncover the openings in the case, and means of operating said slide, substantially as set forth.
3. In auincubator ashelf-supportin g means, consisting of a casting, N, having rack-bars n, in combination with a casting, N', havin hooks fm, augc n', and retaining .means m', substantially as s-hown.
4. The combination, in an incubator, of an egg-supporting tray, S, provided with a serpentine opening or passage, fr, an endless chain located on the under side of the tray, as described, and a series of egg-carriers eX- tending through said opening or passage, and actuating means for said chain, substantially a-s set forth;
