SCHOOL-SLATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,367, dated June 16, 1885.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD L. KRAUS, a citizen of the United States, of the borough State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SchoolSl-ates, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in school-slates; and it consists, essentially, in securing firmly to the edge of the slate-frame some inexpensive soft or elastic material which will deaden the noise of the motion of the slate.

Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates the slate-frame inclosing the slate A. The outer edge of the slateframe is provided with the lon gitudinal groove,
D, shown in section in Fig. 5. B B are si-miframe. The web E is of such width that when bent down against the sides and bottom of the groove 1) the cords or rolls, B, will be drawn forcibly together.
The manner of securing the invention to the frame is as follows: The web E is laid over the groove D, with the cords or rolls B resting on the corners of the edge of the slateframe. The strip 0 is then bent more convex, so that it can be readily introduced wit/:1 its concave side downward into the groove D \Vhen the strip is at the bottom of the-groove,itis released, and, springing outward, its edges bind the web against the sides of the groove, as shown in Fig. 7. The strip might be introduced with its convex surface downward, and would hold the web; but the former manner holds the web tighter. When the cords or rolls B B are thus secured to the frame, their adjacent sides impinge on each other, and the outer sides stand outward beyond the sides of the slate-frame. Thus the edge and sides of the frame are prc vented from making noise by contact with the desk.
In the modification shown in Fig. 8 the cords or rolls B are replaced by the cords b, much smaller in diameter. to is a cord stiflicient in diameter to drive the outer sides of lar endless cords or rolls, consisting of any l the cords, when pressed between the latter, outward beyond the sides of the slate-frame. The cord 10 is covered by the felting g, or other suitable material, and the strip Gis inserted between the cord and felting, as shown. The strip acts so as to bind both the felting and web E against the sides of the notch D.
I am aware that muliling material in cord form, has been attached to school-slate frames by means of notches formed therein, and such construction I do not claim, broadly but,
Having described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with the frame of a slate having a longitudinal recess or notch around its edge, of endless cords of soft elastic material the diameters of which united have a greater width than that of the frame, and
