CHARLES W. DIKEMAN, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
MACHINE FOR MAKING RUGS, 80C.
SPECIFICATIGN forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,339, dated #Time 16, 1885.
l Application tiled December 13, 1834. (No model.)
of a machine embodying` my invention. Fig. 2 is a frontendview ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a detail illustratingthe-operation of my device. Fig. '1L shows theaiature ot' the fabric made by the machine, and Fig..5 is a detail.
A'isa frame that may be clamped to the table of a sewing-machine, lathe, or any other machinery from whence it may get its power.
B isthc driving-shaft, and C C are eccentric-s that are keyed onto Ythe drivingshaft. Each of these eecentrics is encircled by a band, c, from which depends a swinging hanger, D, that connects by a universaljoint, d, with the rearend of a lever, D'orD. These'levers DD2 are pivoted to the arm of the frame A by a bolt o1stud,a.,tl1at passes through slots therein, and these 'levers may be adjusted and secured in adjustment on the pivot by any suitable means for changing the stitch. The front end of lever D'l is connected with a hub,E, by a link, D3, and the arm E' oli this hub slides vin a slot, f, in the head F o't' the machine.
G is an upright bar that passes through the hub and is secured in adjustment therein by a set-screw, (not shown,)andon the lower end of the bar G is secured a looping-linger, g. This inger may be formed with a hollow head to receive the lower end of the bar G,as shown in the drawings, or the har may be enlargedA and bored at its base and the head of the inger reduced and secured therein 5 but in either case a set-screw, g', will by preference be used to secure them together. The lever D is connected by precisely similar mechanism with another upright bar, H, the connectionJbeiug made by a'link, h, tothe arm h of a hub, H',
but on the lower end of bar H, I fix a needle, 5.o K. The head of this needle may be constructed with a bore to receive the bar H, or may be fitted into the bar, the needle and finger being alike in this respect.
That portion of the needle K that enters the fabric is flattened, and near its point it has an eye, k, to receive a strip of material that is to be looped into a backing of gunuy bagging or any other fabric of loose texture. The lower portion of the finger q is tapered and curved S0 that the point, which is rather blunt, ap- 60 proaches Very near the line of travel of the needle.
L is a hollow block or shoe that is secured to or forms part of a hinged platfori'n, L,and while the hinge supports one edge of this platform the other is supported hy a cam, l, of a shalt, M, that turns in a bearing,m, secured to the under side ot' the frame A,so that 'by turning the shalt M the cam can be made to drop the platform L and its shoe out of the` way in insertingor removing work.
N is the backing which, as before stated, may he ot' any loose-textured materiahand N -is a reel that carries the material a to be looped into the backing for the formation ot' rugs, carpets, &e.
The operation of my device is as follows: The iiy-wheel P is to be bolted to any convenient source of power, and. the needle is to be threaded with the material n on the reel, which may consist of yarn,or rags,or leather; in one continuous strip or piece. The backing N is placed .over the shoe or block L, and the shaftB started, and as it revolves its eccentrics will, through the mechanism that con- 85 nects them with the bars G and H, reciprocate them alternately, the result being that the material n will be carried through the backing N, and then, as the needle rises, the iinger will catch the material 'n and hold it down against the tendency of the needle to lift it, and at the same time the convexity in the v finger will by wedging draw the backing slightly, so that a new surface will be presented to theneedle on its downward stroke,'and thus 95 the yarn or other material will be distributed i-n the backing, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, alter which the loops may be sheared 'oft' to form a kind of fulling for the wearing surface ot' the rug or carpet. rihe lower end of finroo what I claim as new, and
ger is preferably notched that it may ltake rm hohl upon they material n as it ypresses down' upon it.
Having thus fully described my invention, desire to secure by Letters Patent, isv l. In a machine for making rugs, Snc., the
combination of a needle and ,looping-nger mounted on the ends of vertically-reciprocat in g bars, said bars vbeing connected by levers 'to cccentrics keyed on the driving-shaft of the 4:. In .a machine for making rugs, lte., thev combination of the frame A, driving-shaft B, eccentrics C C', keyed thereto, swinging hangcrs D, and slotted levers D D, pivoted to the arm of the frame and connected to the hangers I) by universal `joints at one end, and at their` other end connected to the upright bars of the needle and loopin'gffinger,.substantially as set forth.
5. In a .machine for making rugs, &c., lthe combination of the driving-shaft, its eccentrics and hangers, and levers D D,connected thereto,With the head F,havin g vertical, slots in its front face, and arms E and h,passing through and moving in said slots, said arms being connected tothe described levers by links h and D3 outside of said head, and to Vertical bars G H by hubs E and H Within said head, substantially asset forth. A
6. In a machine for making r'u'gs, Snc., the combination of the' alternatelyreciprocating needle and finger with the block L, hinged platform L,vbearing m, secured to theunde'r' side of' the machine-frame, and shaft M, ha'ving cam Z at one end adapted. to siipport one n asset forth.
f edge of the hinged platform or tofneri'nit itjto Abe loweredby turning said cam, substantialljy;l` 5o In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Mlwakeajin sin, in the presence of two witnesses," u
