TRIMMING' DEVICE WITH FINGER GUARD AND ANTI-'CURLING DEVICE Filed Nov. 14, 1965 I /G. 7 27 0 I IG. 9

INVENTOR ANGELO M/CAL E ATTORNEY United States Patent 3,203,382 TRiMMlNG DEVICE WlTH FINGER-GUARD AND ANTi-CURLENG DEVICE Angelo Micale, 995 Nassau St., North Brunswick, NJ. Filed Nov. 14, 1963, Ser. No. 323,845 1 Claim. (Cl. 112-422) This invention relates to a combination finger guard and anti-curling device which is especially useful when a pinking knife is used in sewing.
In simultaneously pinking and sewing cloth, a special foot is used, which foot carries a finger guard conforming to, and disposed adjacent to, the vertex of the pinking knife. Not only does the special foot involve extra expense, but the marginal portion of the cloth at times curls up and gets between the guard and the knife and thus is not pinked, especially as the distance between the needle and the knife is extended as required. With the present invention, a plain foot is used and curling is prevented.
The drawings illustrate the invention, and in these:
FIGS. 1 and 2 are respectively front and end views of the finger guard shown in relation to a sewing foot and as connected thereto and to a foot bar;
FIGS. 3 and 4 are respectively a left side and front elevation of FIG. 1 in relation to part of a pinking knife structure;
FIGS. 5 and 6 are respectively enlarged front and side views of the finger guard and of the connector to which it is attached;
FIGS. 7 and 8 are respectively enlarged plan and end views of the anti-curling pin which fits adjustably into the finger guard;
FIG. 9 is an end view of a set screw which locks the anti-curling pin in the finger guard; and
FIG. 10 is a section on line 1ti10 of FIG. 9.
Referring to the drawings for a detailed description, the finger guard 12 is a hollow cylinder having an eccentric bore 13. The guard is attached endwise to the forward end of a connector 15 and to a side thereof and at right angles thereto. The connector is angular, and its upwardly extending rear portion has a slot 17 extending downwardly from its upper end, through which slot a fastening screw 19 secures the connector to the shank 21 of a foot 22 and to a foot bar 23. The connector, and therefore the finger guard, is thereby adjustable up and down, and also angularly.
A pin 25, which comprises the pin proper 26 and a head 27 of larger diameter, constitutes an anti-curling means. The pin proper slidably fits into the bore 13 of the finger guard, being adjustable lengthwise therein, and is flat on one side (FIG. 8), against which side a set screw 30 (FIGS. 9 and 10) is tightened to hold the pin in a desired position lengthwise. The set screw 30 passes through a threaded hole 32 in the side of the finger guard.
FIG. 4 shows part of a usual pinking knife structure, includin the knife 35 itself and an upright member 36, and also shows how the anti-curling pin 25 is adjustable to close the gap between the end of the finger guard and the upright 36, so that the goods being sewed will be effectively prevented from curling to an extent that will avoid its being pinked. The upper surface of the base 3 of the pinking knife structure is level with the machine table and the upper surface of the feeder is substantialiy so, the feeder being under part of the foot 22.
The pin 25 not only acts to prevent curling of the goods, but also as an extension of the finger guard 12 to protect against the pinking knife 35.
What is claimed is:
Apparatus comprising a sewing machine, said sewing machine having a plain foot, a pinking knife positioned adjacent the plain foot, said sewing machine including a flat table, said pinking knife being level with the table, said sewing machine having a foot bar to which the foot is secured, a connector connected to the side of the foot bar opposite from the side on which said pinking knife is positioned, said connector being connected to the foot bar so as to be adjustable up and down and also angularly adjustable relative to the foot bar, a horizontal component integral with said connector and extending toward the other side of said foot bar, said horizontal component having a longitudinal bore disposed crosswise of the foot and constituting a finger guard, said horizontal component being connected endwise to the forward end portion of said connector, an anti-curling pin slidably disposed in the bore of the finger guard, fastening means for holding said pin in the finger guard at a selected position, said anti-curling pin extending to a point abutting said upright member and further extending in front of said pinking knife to function as a finger guard to prevent injury by the knife and, further, to prevent curling of material adjacent said upright member.
