Description

(No Model.)
J. B. SANFORD.
WHARF.
No. 320,292. Patented June 16, 1885.
INVENT CIR- nor to a part of the pier.
Nirn STATES ATENT Erica,
WHARF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,292, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed February 13, 1585.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known than I, Josnrn B. SANFORD, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in XVharves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention consists in the combination, with a wharf or pier formed of stringers supported by piles, of a counterbalanced hinged platform and fastening devices, by means of which the swinging end of the said platform can be held at different heights to suit tidal variations.
In the further description of the said invention which follows, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, forminga part hereof, and in which- Figure I is a perspective view of my improved wharf or pier, and Fig. 11 a sectional view of parts thereof on an enlarged scale.
A A are stringers extending from a wharf of ordinary construction, supported by piles B. O is a platform situated between the stringers A, and hinged in any suitable man- D is a lever resting about centrally of its length on a rounded bar, 1), extending between the piles and situated underneath the platform. One end of the lever D is in contact with the under side of the platform 0, and the other end is provided with a weight, E, which counterbalances the platform 0. The outer end of the platform 0 is fitted with bolts 0, adapted to (No model.)
enter staples d on the end of the stringers or recesses e in the timbers F, supporting the outer end of the stringers. By means of these bolts the platform may be held in different depressed positions to suit the height of the tide. The platform 0 being counterbalanced, very little weight applied to its outer end will be sufficient to depress it. The platform with its supporting-1ever, being inclosed by piles and the frame-work of the wharf, as shown, is not liable to injury, and the platform being guided in its movement by the stringers, no lateral strain can be placed on the hinges at its inner end.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with a wharf, the stringers A, projecting from the said wharf and supported by the piles B, hinged platform O, situ ated between the said stringers, counterbalanced supporting-lever D, and. bar I), extending between the piles which support the said stringers, substantially as specified.
2. In combination with a wharf, a pier extending therefrom, which consists of the stringers A, piles B, hinged platform 0, counterbalanced lever D, supporting-bar b, and means to hold the said platform at various heights or depressed positions, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOSEPH B. SANFORD.
