FASTENING FOR FREIGHT=CAR DOORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,239, dated June 16, 1.885.
Application filed April 3, 1855.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GILBERT ANSEL GER- MoND, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Freight Gar Doors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is an elevation of one of my im proved fastenings, shown as applied to the door and body of a freight-car. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the fastening,shown with its cover raised, part of the said cover and parts of the hasp being broken away. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same, the cover being shown raised, and the hasp and a part of the ear-body being shown in section.
The object of this invention is to provide fastenings for freightear doors constructed in such a manner that a seal can be readily applied to them, and that the said fastcnings cannot be opened without breaking the said seal.
' The invention relates to a fastening for freight-car doors constructed with a base part having an eyebolt and cross-grooves in its iaee, a cover hinged to the said base part and having a slot to receive the eyebolt, and eyes to receive the hinging and fastening pins, a fastening-pin perforated to receive in practice aseal-wire, and a hasp having one or more cross-heads to engage with the grooves of the base part, as will be hereinafter fully described.
Areprcsents the door, and B the body, of an ordinary freight-car. O is the base or stationary part of the fastening, which has holes in its corners to receive the bolt 1), by means of which the said base part is secured to the car-body B. One of the bolts D, as D, is made with an eye-head to pass through a slot, E, in the cover E and receive a padlock, when de- (ModelJ sired. The cover E is made with an eye, F, upon the inner side of one end, to enter a reeess or slot in the end of the base part 0 and receive the pin or rivet G, by means of which the two parts of the fastening are hinged together. Upon the inner side of the otherend of the cover E is formed an eye, H, to enter a recess in the other end of the base part 0 and receive a pin, I, passed through a transverse hole in the said end of the base part 0. The pin I is made with a head on one end and aperforation through its other end, in practice, to receive the wire of the seal, which wireisalso passed through a hole in the hasp J. The hasp J is hinged to the door A by a staple or other suitable means. The hasp J is made with a crosshead, J, at a little distance from its base, and with a second cross-head, J, near its outer end.
In the face of the base part 0 of the fastening is formed a transverse groove, 0, to receive the body of the hasp J, and a longitudinal groove, 0", to receive a cross-head ot' the said hasp. 'lhe hasp and its crosshead are secured in place in the grooves of the base 0 by the cover E. XVith this construction the door can be fastened fully or partly closed, as may be desired, and when fastened and sealed cannot be opened without breaking the seal, and thus showing that it has been tampered with.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A fastening for freightcar doors, constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and consisting of the base part 0, having eyebolt D and cross-grooves O O, the hinged cover E, having slot E and eyes F H, the perforated pin I, and the perforated hasp J, having one or more cross'heads, J J, asset forth.
