EPHRAIM M. TURNER, OF FORT VORTH,
TEXAS.
WHIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,193, dated June 16,1885.
Application filed December 9, 1884.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EPHRAUI M. TURNER, of Fort Vorth, in the county of Tart-ant and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVhips, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention, while not restricted to any particular kind of whip, long or short, and however finished at its outer end, whether with a tail or with an attached lash for mere riding or for driving stock or cattle, and other purposes, is more particularly intended for whips used by stock-farmers, or those em ployed by them, and others of like calling.
The invention consists in a combination, with a metallic or other rigid handle, of a whip body or core composed of cotton or other vegetable fibrous material, in one or more strands, having wire wrapped about or incorporated with them, and in the combination therewith of a vulcanized rubber covering, the fibrous material giving the necessary flexibility to the body or core of the whip and the wire applied thereto, said material protecting the latter from injury during the process of covering or vulcanizing the rubber covering.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 represents an exterior longitudinal View of a whip embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a sectional longitudinal view, upon a larger scale, of the same in part; and Fig. 3, a longitudinal view of one of the strands, in part, of which the body or core of the whip is composed.
A is the body or core of the whip, which may either be made straight or tapering, and which is composed of one or more strands of cotton or other like loose vegetable fibrous material, I), each strand being made up of any number of yarns or minor strands twisted together as in rope-making, and having light wire 0 wrapped about them, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. In the case of a tapering whip, one of such compound strands may be used by doubling or bending it into a ring form, or otherwise, at what would form the outer end of the whip body or (No model.)
core, and then running it back and turning the divided portions of it over toward the outer end again for a portion of the length of the body or core; or two or more of such compound strands may be used. This body, stock, or core A of the whip is connected at its inner end with a rigid or metal handle or handle-section, B, either by looping it over or otherwise engagingit with a protuberance, d, on said handle or handle-section, by inserting it within a cavity therein, or otherwise. Said body, stock, or core may, if desired, be covered with any suitable material, but preferably with a rubber coating or covering, 0, arranged to extend over either a portion or the whole length of the handle-section B, and by com-. bining the wire 0 with the fibrous material I) the fibrous body or core is protected from injury in vulcanizing or heating and drying the rubber on it, and such covered body, stock, or core has all the desired strength, lightness, and elasticity which are required for a good whip, and is durable and not liable to split or break.
In the drawings the handle of the whip is shown as composed of a partially-hollow in nor metal section, B, which may be used to serve as a match safe or box, and an outer section, B, constructed to form a whistle at e, and of any desired shape, and made to screw into the inner section;
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A whip-stock body or core composed of a loose vegetable fibrous material in one or more twisted strands, the yarns composing which having wires wrapped about them, in combination with a metal or rigid handle to which said core is attached, and a vulcanized rubber covering to said core, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the hollow metallic handle-sections B and outer end sections, B, fitted thereto, and constructed to form a whistle, the fibrous and wire core A, and the vulcanized rubber covering or coating 3, substantially as specified.
E. M. TURNER.
