HANS J. MULLER, on NEW YORK, N. Y ASSIGNOR TO THE ZUGKER & LEVETT oHEMIoAL ooMrANY, or sAME rLAcE.
CORE FOR THE ARMATURES OF DYNAMO-ELECTRIC MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,158, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed January 20, 1885.
' useful improvements in the cores of the Siemens armature; and the object of the invention is to provide means for ventilating the core to prevent overheating of the core, which overheating is the great defect of the Siemens armature and renders it useless in many cases.
The invention consists in a solid cast Siemens armature-core, provided with transverse apertures for ventilation.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is aside view of an armature-core, parts being broken out and others in section. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, parts being broken out and parts being in section. Fig. 3 is across-sectional view of the same.
The solid cast Siemens armaturecore A has a double T-shaped cross-section of the usual shape, and is provided at the ends with the shoulders B for the axle-pieces. The core is provided witha series of transverse slots or apertures, 0, extending from side to side (No model.)
and through the central portion, D, and from top to bottom of the same, and divides the same into a series of gridiron-bars,D, uniting the side pieces, E. The Wires are wound longitudinally in the two opposite grooves and over the gridiron-bars D. The slots or apertures 0 thus serve as ventilating openings and keep the core cool and prevent overheating of the same.
I am aware that armaturecores have been provided with ventilating-openings; but these armatures were formed of a series of plates bolted together, and the ventilating-openings have been arranged longitudinallyand are not as effective as the transverse ventilating-open ings.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A Siemens armature-core formed of a single block of metal, provided with a series of transverse ventilating apertures extending from side to side and dividing thecentral portion into transverse gridiron-bars, the said transverse apertures between the bars having the same cross-section from the outer surface of one side of the armature-core to the outer surface of the opposite side, substantially as herein shown and described.
HANS J. MULLER.
