SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 320,075, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed March 533, 1895.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, AUGUSTINE F. LITTLE- FIELD, of Lynn, in the county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Beating Out Velts in the Manufacture of Boots and Shoes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, isa specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
In the manufacture of that class of boots and shoes known as welted work the welt stitched to the upper and to the inner sole has to be hammered or beat out by hand in order I5 to make the same smooth and level, that it may lie properly upon the outer sole, to which it is to be attached by stitches or otherwise.
The object of this invention is to provide a machine to automatically perform this class of work.
This invention consists, essentially, in an automaticallyoperated hammer, combined with a welt support or wheel the edge of which is reduced to extend between the upper and its attached welt, substantially as will be described.
Figure 1 is a side elevation and partial section representing a machine embodying my invention, the shoe being shown in section 0 with the welt in position to be hammered or beat out. Fig. 2 is a rear or right-hand end elevation of Fig. 1.
The frame-work A has bearings A A for the main shaft A upon which is secured the recessed part B of a clutch-pulley, the other part, B, of which is mounted loosely on the said shaft, and is grooved at B to receive a driving-welt and at B to receive a pin, 2, projecting therein from the forked upper end of 0 the lever O, pivoted at O on an extension of the frame-work, the inner arm of the said lever having connected with it a rod, 0 which by asuitable link, G, is joined with any usual treadle mechanism, (not shown,) by which at 5 will the part B of the clutch rotated continuously by a belt may be forced into contact with the clutch part 13 fast to the shaft A, to rotate the said shaft. The rod E is adapted to slide in the bearings A" A; of the frame-work and has applied to it two fast collars, a b, and between the collar 1) and the lower end of the loose sleeve D the rod has applied to it a strong spiral spring, 0, so that the blow of the hammer is made yielding, or so that the ham- 6o mer may yield to the differing thickness of material under it when the thickness or solidity of the material demands. The frame-work is provided with a vertical stud, (shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1,) on which is placed loosely a welt-support, G, made as a wheel having a thin V -shaped edge, 5, which is adapted to be inserted into the space between the welt w and upper 11, attached to the inner sole, i, by the stitches s. \Vhcn the shoe is held as in Fig. 1, the welt 20 may be placed between the weltsupport G and the hammer E, when it will be subjected to a series of rapid blows so long as the clutch-pulley B B is kept in rotation. The rod E, at its upper end, is provided with a fixed collar, h, which is provided with a 1101c to receive loosely the pin it, attached to the frame-work, the said pin and collar preventing revolution of the rod E. The spring it acts normally to keep the clutch parts B B separated. The collarm prevents the withdrawal of the pulley B from the shaft A I claim 1. In a machine for beating out welts at- S tached to the uppers and soles of boots and shoes, the welt-support shaped to enter the space between the upper and its attached welt, combined with the antomatically-reciprocated hammer to hammer the said welt, substantially as described.
