(Cl. 333-194) The present invention generally relates to templates, and is more particularly concerned with a novel door template which is capable of being quickly and easily conformed to a door opening with the template subsquently being positioned upon a door whereby the door can be quickly and easily trimmed so as to conform to the door opening.
As will be appreciated by those familiar with the art, the hanging of doors can be an extremely difiicult and timeconsuming task both because of the cumbersome nature of the door and the necessity of allowing for a free movement of the door while maintaining only a minimum amount of clearance. While it is appreciated that various different types of door templates are known and have previously been used, it is a primary object of the instant invention to provide a template which constitutes a significant advance over the more conventional types of templates, this advance, based on novel structural features, resulting in a template incorporating all of the desirable features necessary to make it a highly useful tool in the performance of a normally difficult task.
As such, it is also an object of the present invention to provide a template which, by simple adjustments, can be made to conform to an extremely wide range of different size door openings.
Also, it is intended that the template of the present invention be capable of simple and rapid adjustment easily handled by a single workman.
Furthermore, it is an object of the present invention to combine both a rough heighth and width adjustment so as to quickly approach the right door opening size, with a fine adjustment so as to subsequently exactly conform the template to the door opening in both heighth and width.
In accomplishing these objects, it is also an object of the instant invention to provide a template which is generally simple in structure and easily used even by the layman.
Likewise, it is considered a significant object of the instant invention that the template be specifically constructed so as to, upon being positioned on a door, span the intermediate portion thereof thus making it equally adaptable for use on those doors having louvers, as well as the more conventional ilush doors.
Furthermore, it is considered a significant object of the present invention that the side plates of the template are substantially flexible so as to allow for a close conforming of the template to the doorjambs regardless of any irregularities which might appear therein.
Another significant object of the present invention resides in the fact that the template itself is both easy to assemble and quickly dismantled for transporting or storage.
These together with other objects and advantages which will become subsequently apparent reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Referring now more specifically to the drawings, reference numeral 20 generally designates the door template comprising the present invention. This template 20 con- .sists basically of two vertically elongated frame beams 22 adjustably maintained in spaced relation to each other by three vertically spaced laterally extending elongated rectangular extension members 24, and a flat vertically elongated guide plate 26 positioned laterally of and generally parallel to each of the frame beams.
The frame beams 22, being generally identical in shape, are generally channel-shaped with each including a flat relatively wide forward facing bight portion 28 and inwardly directed full length flanges 30 integral with the free ends of the channel legs 32, these flanges 30, among other functions, acting so as to rigidify the beams 22. Each of the frame beams 22 has rigidly aflixed to the face 28 thereof three vertically spaced transversely extending rectangular sleeves 34, each of these sleeves 34 receiving therein an end of one of the extension members 24 for enabling a lateral adjustment of the frame beams 22 toward and away from each other. As will be appreciated from the drawings, each of the extension members 24 includes a plurality of slots 36 along the lower edge thereof, these slots 36 being spaced a predetermined distance from each other, for example, one or two inches, so as to constitute a means for generally adjusting the template 20 to the proper Width as quickly as possible.
In order to achieve this desired rapid rough adjustment, three locking lugs 38 are provided in conjunction with each frame beam 22, these locking lugs being simultaneously engageable and disengageable within vertically aligned ones of the slots 36 through complementary slots 40 within the lower edge of the sleeves 34 whereby upon engagement of the lugs 38 through the slots 4-0 and into the extension member slots 36, each frame beam 22 is fixed relative to the extension member 24 and adjoining frame beam 22. In order to provide for this simultaneous engagement and disengagement of the locking lugs 38, a control bar 42 is slidably secured along the inner leg 32 of each of the frame beams 22, each of these control bars 42 including a laterally directed bifurcated flange 44 at its lower end, this flange 44 engaged about a stub shaft 46 upon which a biasing spring 48 is journaled, this spring 48 being positioned between the flange 44 and a plate 50 rigid with the adjoining frame beam 22 so as to bias the control bar upwardly, this upward biasing effecting the locking engagement of the three locking lugs 38, these locking lugs 38 being rigidly affixed to the control bar. It will be appreciated that the flange 44, by being located at the bottom of the template 20, can be pressed downwardly by the foot of the user of the template thereby leaving both hands free for adjusting the frame beams 22. Further, as will be noted from FIGURE 12, it is contemplated that one locking lug 38 on each frame beam 22, preferably the middle locking lug, be provided with a suitable notch or hole 52 through the upper edge thereof for the reception of a pin or nail 54 which will prevent reengagement of the lugs 38 within the slots 36 so as to enable the lateral adjustment of the frame beams 22 without interference from the locking lugs 38. In regard to this lateral adjustment of the frame beams 22, it is contemplated that gage lines 56 be provided on each extension member 24, these gage lines 56 each corresponding to an adjacent slot 36 and being alignable with the inner edge of the adjoining frame sleeve 34, this edge of the frame sleeve 34 having a recess 58 therein so as to facilitate the alignment and reading of the gage lines 56.
In order to provide an additional means for locking the frame beams 22 to the extension members 24, and to also provide for a more rigid interlocking therebetween such as might be desirable during the final adjustment of the template and during the movement of the template from the doorway to the door, it is contemplated that an elongated clamping block 60 be provided within each sleeve 34 directly above the adjoining portion of the extension member 24, the upper edge of the extension member 24 being in sliding engagement with the lower edge of the clamp block 60. A clamp screw 62, having an enlarged gripping head 64 thereon, is threadedly engaged through the upper portion of the rectangular sleeve 34 and has the lower end 66 thereof abutted against the upper edge of the clamp block 68 whereby -a turning of the clamp screw 62 will effect a downward movement of the clamp block and a clamping of the extension member 24 between the block 60 and the bottom of the sleeve 34. If so desired, in order to prevent a lateral movement of the clamp block 60 during the adjustment of the corresponding frame beam 22, the lower end 66 of the clamp screw 62 can be positioned within a recess in the upper end of the clamp block 60 or, if preferred, can be rotatably secured to the block 60.
In order to provide for a close conformance to the actual door opening, a guide plate 26 is adjustably mounted parallel to and laterally outward from each of the frame beams 22. Each of these guide plates 26 is .perfectly flat and includesa plurality of vertically spaced slits 68 along a major portion of the height thereof. These slits 68 extend inwardly from the outer edge of the guide plate to the guide rail 70 secured along the inner edge of the guide plate 26, this guide rail being L-shaped in cross section.
The final adjustment of the template 20 is effected by fine threaded adjusting screws 72, three being used in conjunction with each guide plate. Each of the finely threaded adjusting screws 72 is journaled through aligned apertures in the legs 32 of one of the frame beams 22, the outer end of the adjusting screw 72 being fixed to an extension plate 74 which in turn is rigid with a forwardly projecting leg of the angle-shaped guide rail '70 so as to offset the adjoining guide plate rearwardly from the frame beams 22 for reasons which shall be pointed out presently. Movement of the adjusting screw 72 is controlled by a handwheel 76, this handwheel 76 being mounted within a bracket 78 secured to the outer leg 32 of the beam 22, suitable bushings being provided on both sides of the handwheel 76. In utilizing these adjusting screws 72 in conforming the outer edge of each guide plate 26 to any irregularities which might be present in the door jamb, it will be appreciated that the slits 68, these slits extending at a 30 angle to the outer edge of the guide plate, allow for a substantial degree of flexing of the guide plate 26 while still maintaining its general planar shape as will be required for the subsequent final shaping of the door.
Turning now to the vertical adjustment of the template 2t), in order to obtain the desired initial rough adjustment, a support leg 80 is provided, this support leg 80 having a pair of vertically spaced bolt holes 82 therein for the selective reception of a securing bolt 84 therethrough, this bolt 84 also extending through a centrally located bolt hole in the bottom extension member 24. The leg 80 is to be positioned with the bolt 84 extending through the lower leg hole 82 when the template is to be used in the fitting of conventional six foot eight inch doors, and the upper bolt hole 82 is to be used when fitting seven foot doors. It will be noted that the support leg 80, like the adjacent frame beams 22, is provided with a rectangular sleeve 85 rigid therewith, this sleeve 85 receiving the lower extension member 24 therethrough and including a clamping block 86 which, when the lower hole 82 is used, is positioned above the extension member 24 and clamped thereagainst by the clamping screw 88. However, when the upper support leg bolt hole 82 is used, the clamping block 86 is positioned below the extension member 24 with the clamping screw 88 forcing the extension member 24 down against the block 86, in both instances a rigid unit being provided.
The final heighth adjustment is achieved by the use of elongated door length indicators 90 slida bly mounted at the upper and lower ends of each of the guide rails 70 between bearing plates 92 fixed to the guide rails 70 and elongated clamp members 94 by means of clamping bolts 95, being secured to the guide rails 70 and projecting therefrom through vertically elongated slots 98 in the indicators 90 and through the clamping members 94 whereby upon a loosening of the bolt nuts 100, a vertical adjustment of the door length indicators 90 can be effected. In order to facilitate this adjustment, it will be noted that the inner end 102 of each of the door length indicators 90 is bent laterally outward so as to enable the user of the device to obtain a grip on the indicator. The outer end of each of the door length indicators has been offset so as to extend substantially in the same plane as the guide plate 26 thus insuring a fitting of the template 20 to the door opening in the same plane throughout the periphery thereof. It will be noted that each of the door length indicators 90 has the side edge thereof engaged with the forwardly projecting leg of the adjoining guide rail 70 thus resulting in a stabilization of the door length indicator 90. Further, it is considered significant that the clamp member 94 used in conjunction with each door length indicator 90 is substantially elongated so as to provide a clamping force over a good portion of the door length indicator upon a tightening of the nut 100 thereby preventing any accidental knocking of the indicator 94 out of adjustment during the movement of the template 20.
In using the template 20, first, the support leg 80 is properly positioned in accordance to the general heighth of the door to be cut and then clamped to the lower extension member 24 by the bo-lt 84. In regard to this support leg 80, it should also be recognized that when cutting doors other than the above noted conventional six foot eight inch and seven foot doors, longer leg members can be quickly and easily substituted. After the support leg 30 has been fixed in its adjusted position, the frame beams 22 are laterally spaced from each other by first simultaneously disengaging the locking lugs 38 on one "beam 22 and moving this beam along the extension members 24 until the inner edge of the sleeves 34 thereon correspond to the proper gage line 56 after which the locking lugs 38 are engaged within the corresponding slots 36. T he other frame beam 22 is adjusted similarly. Next, the template 20 is positioned within the door opening with four positioning blocks 106, mounted on the guide plates 26, being engaged against the doorstep. Each of these positioning blocks 1%, consisting of a rectangular piece of wood having a shaft 108 surrounded by a compression spring 11ft extending therefrom, is normally positioned on a laterally projecting bifurcated bar 112 secured to the adjoining frame beam 22, the shaft 168 being received within the bifurcation with the bar 112 being clamped between the spring 111 and the block 106. In order to mount the positioning blocks 1% on the guide plates as, it will be noted that similar recesses 1 14 are also provided in the outer edge of each of the guide plates 26.
After the template has been positioned in the door opening With the positioning blocks MP6 engaged with the doorstep, one of the guide plates 26, for example the left hand guide plate of the template 2t) illustrated in FIGURE 1, is adjusted by means of the adjusting screws '72 into conforming engagement with the adjacent doorjamb, the necessary flexing of the guide plate 26 being provided for by the slits 68. After the first guide plate 26 has been adjusted in to conforming engagement with the doorjamb on one side, the other guide plate 26 is also adjusted so as to conform to the adjoining doorjamb, however, in the case of this second guide plate, clearance blocks 116 are provided, in line with each adjusting screw 72, between the outer edge of this second guide plate and the doorjamb, these clearance blocks 116 each being of a thickness corresponding to the total amount of space desired between each edge of the door and the adjoining jamb. For example, if one-eighth inch clearance is desired on each side of the door, the clearanc blocks will be one-quarter inch thick.
The desired final vertical adjustment of the template 20 is achieved by first vertically adjusting the upper door length indicators 9@ against the head jamb and subsequently vertically downwardly adjusting the lower door length indicators, suitable clearance blocks, similar to the clearance blocks 1-16 and for the same purpose, being provided between the lower door length indicators hit and the floor, thus providing for the desired clearance between the top and bottom of the door and the adjacent portions of the door opening.
While not specifically mentioned supra, it is intended that the template 263 of the instant invention be readily adaptable for use within an extremely wide range of door openings, such being possible by, in the instance of extremely wide door openings, substituting longer extension member 24, these extension members, generally formed of plywood, being easily fabricated even at a job site. Furthermore, inasmuch as each of the frame sleeves 34 includes a clamp block of and clamping screw 62, temporary extension members, such as might occasionally be required, can be rigidly clamped within the sleeve 34 without using the normally more convenient interconnected locking lugs 38.
After the template 20 has been properly adjusted, it is removed from the door opening and positioned upon a horizontally orientated door to be cut to conform to the opening, the positioning blocks 106 having first been removed from the guide plate slots 11d and mounted on the bifurcated bars 112 so as to not interfere with the flush positioning of the guide plates 2d on the door surface. As mentioned previously, the guide plates 26 are offset laterally from the frame beams 28 by means of the extension plates 74 and angled guide rails 70, this having been done so as to position the intermediate portion of the template 20 well above the door surface so as to avoid any interference with any projections, such as louvers 118 which might be on the door 120. Inasmuch as louvered doors of various types are in conventional usage, the significance of providing a template which is equally adaptable for such doors as well as flush doors is considered to be readily apparent. Further, it is contemplated that enlarged spacer blocks 122 be provided at both the upper and lower ends of the frame beams 22, these spacer blocks 122 having grooves therein for the reception of the inwardly directed flanges 3t bolt means 124 also being used to secure the spacer blocks. As will be appreciated from FIGURES 10 and ll, the outer surfaces of the spacer blocks 122 are aligned with the guide plates 26 thus assisting in the support of the frame beams 22 upon a positioning of the template 20 on a door to be trimmed.
As brought out supra, the slits 68 are provided so as to allow for a conforming of the guide plates 26 to any curves which might occur in the doorjamb without effecting a distortion of the guide plate out of its normal plane, thus allowing the guide plate to lie flat on the surface of the door 120 as illustrated in FIGURES 10 and 11. After the template 20 is positioned on the door 120, a door plane is used to dress the sides of the door, the fence on the door plane being set to the desired edge bevel and also set so as to contact the adjoining guide rail 70 when the desired amount of trimming has been effected. Next, the door 120 is marked at each end so as to correspond to the outer ends of the door length indicators after which the template 20 is removed and these ends trimmed by either a power saw or door plane. With reference again to the slits 68, it will be noted that these slits are arranged so as to extend in opposite directions on each of the guide plates 26, this being done so as to enable the smooth passage of the plane fence thereover without any danger of contacting exposed edges.
From-the foregoing, it should be readily apparent that a novel door template has been defined which can be quickly and easily set. This template, as described in detail supra, can, with slight modifications, be used in the fitting of doors of an extremely wide range of different sizes, the template combining both rapid horizontal and vertical rough adjustments and horizontal and vertical fine adjustments whereby the door opening frame can be quickly approximated and then closely conformed to. Furthermore, the template of the instant invention is particularly adaptable for use with all types of doors whether louvered or flush in that the major portion of the template, upon positioning of the template on a door, is spaced from the door a substantial distance thus avoiding contact with any centrally located louvers or projections which might appear thereon.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
1. In a door template, a pair of vertically extending frame beams, means extending transversely between said beams, means releasably securing said beams to said transversely extending means, said beams being transversely adjustable toward and away from each other on said transversely extending means, a pair of guide plates, one extending substantially parallel to each frame beam and laterally outward therefrom, adjustable means interconnecting each plate to the adjoining beam for varying the distance therebetween, said transversely extending means consisting of a plurality of vertically spaced generally elongated rectangular members, each of said beams having a plurality of sleeves fixed thereon for adjustably receiving the adjacent ends of the members, said means releasably securing said beams to said transversely extending means being associated with each sleeve for selectively fixing the corresponding member in a plurality of adjusted positions therein, and means for effecting a simultaneous engagement and disengagement of all of the releasably securing means associated with the sleeves on one of said beams.
2. In a door template, a pair of vertically extending frame beams, means extending transversely between said beams, means releasably securing said beams to said transversely extending means, said beams being transversely adjustable toward and away from each other on said transversely extending means, a pair of guide plates, one extending substantially parallel to each frame beam and laterally outward therefrom, adjustable means interconnecting each plate to the adjoining beam for varying the distance therebetween, said transversely extending means consisting of a plurality of vertically spaced generally elongated rectangular members, each of said beams having a plurality of sleeves fixed thereon for adjustably receiving the adjacent ends of the members, said members each having transverse slots spaced along the bottom edge thereof, each of said sleeves including an opening therein with which the member slots are selectively alignable, said means releasably securing said beams to said transversely extending means including lugs mounted on the beams releasably engageable through each sleeve opening with a slot aligned therewith in a manner so as to prevent relative movement between the sleeve and member, and a pair of control means mounted on the frame beams, each control means effecting the simultaneous engagement and disengagement of the lugs on one of the frame beams.
3. The structure of claim 1 wherein said members are loosely received within the sleeves, each sleeve having an elongated clamp block therein and means for selectively engaging said clamp block with that portion of the member received within the sleeve, thereby preventing relative movement between the member and sleeve.
4. The structure of claim 1 including a plurality of transversely angled vertically spaced slits in each guide plate, each slit extending inwardly from the outer edge of the plate and continuing for a major portion of the width of the plate.
5. In a door template, a pair of vertically extending frame beams, means extending transversely between said beams, means releasably securing said beams to said transversely extending means, said beams being transversely adjustable toward and away from each other on said transversely extending means, a pair of guide plates, one extending substantially parallel to each frame beam and laterally outward therefrom, adjustable means interconnecting each plate to the adjoining beam for varying the distance therebetween, a vertically adjustable support leg mounted substantially centrally between the frame beams and projectable below the lower ends thereof so as to constitute an initial rough vertical adjustment of the template, a plurality of vertically adjustable door length indicators mounted on said guide plates and projectable both above the upper ends thereof and below the lower ends thereof, being positioned laterally out-of the plane of the frame beams, and spacer blocks secured to the upper and lower ends of each frame beam, said spacer blocks having fiat outer faces located in the plane of the guide plates, thereby enabling, upon positioning of the template on a door to be trimmed, the spacing of the central portion of the template above the door surface.
6. The structure of claim 4 wherein said adjustable means interconnecting each guide plate to the adjoining beam consists of a plurality of vertically spaced threaded adjusting bolts having the outer ends fixed to the guide plate, the inner end journaled through the beam, and the adjustment controlled by a handwheel, thereby enabling an adjustment of the plate with one hand.
7. The structure of claim 2 including, a vertically adjustable support leg mounted substantially centrally between the frame beams and projectable below the lower ends thereof so as to constitute an initial rough vertical adjustment of the template, and a plurality of vertically adjustable door length indicators mounted on said guide plates and projectable both above the upper ends thereof and below the lower ends thereof.
8. The structure of claim 2 wherein the guide plates are positioned laterally out of the plane of the frame beams, and spacer blocks secured to the upper and lower ends of each frame beam, said spacer blocks having flat outer faces located in the plane of the guide plates, thereby enabling, upon positioning of the template on a door to be trimmed, the spacing of the central portion of the template above the door surface.
9. In a door template, a pair of vertically extending uprights, means extending transversely between said uprights, means releasably securing said uprights to said transversely extending means, said uprights being transversely adjustable toward and away from each other on said transversely extending means, a pair of guide plates, one extended substantially parallel to each upright and laterally outward therefrom, adjustable means interconnecting each plate to the adjoining upright for varying the distance therebetween, said transversely extending means consisting of a plurality of vertically spaced elongated members, each of said uprights having a plurality of guide units fixed thereon for adjustably receiving adjacent ends of the members, said members each having openings spaced along the length thereof, each of said guide units including a single opening therein with which the member openings are selectively alignable, said means releasably securing said uprights to said transversely extending means including lock means mounted on the uprights releasably engageable through each guide unit opening with a member opening aligned therewith in a manner so as to prevent relative movement between the guide unit and the member, and a pair of control means mounted on the uprights, each control means effecting the simultaneous engagement and disengagement of the lock means on one of the uprights.
10. In a door template, a pair of vertically extending frame beams, means extending transversely between said beams, means releasably securing said beams to said transversely extending means, said beams being transversely adjustable toward and away from each other on said transversely extending means, a pair of guide plates, means mounting one guide plate on each frame beam laterally outward thereof and substantially parallel thereto, said transversely extending means consisting of a plurality of vertically spaced generally elongated rectangular members, each of said beams having a plurality of sleeves fixed thereon for adjustably receiving the adjacent ends of the members, said means releasably securing said beams to said transversely extending means being associated with each sleeve for selectively fixing the corresponding member in a plurality of adjusted positions therein, and means for effecting a simultaneously engagement and disengagement of all of the releasably securing means associated with the sleeves on one of said beams.
11. In a door template, a pair of vertically extending frame beams, means extending transversely between said beams, means releasably securing said beams to said transversely extending means, said beams being transversely adjustable toward and away from each other on said transversely extending means, said transversely extending means consisting of a plurality of vertically spaced generally elongated rectangular members, each of said beams having a plurality of sleeves fixed thereon for adjustably receiving the adjacent ends of the members, said members each having transverse slots spaced along the bottom edge thereof, each of said sleeves including an opening therein with which the member slots are selectively alignable, said means releasably securing said beams to said transversely extending means including lugs mounted on the beam releasably engageable through each sleeve opening with a slot aligned therewith in a manner so as to prevent relative movement between the sleeve and member, and a pair of control means mounted on the frame beams, each control means effecting the simultaneous engagement and disengagement of the lugs on one of the frame beams.
12. In a door template, a pair of vertically extending uprights, means extending transversely between said uprights, means releasably securing said uprights to said transversely extending means, said uprights being transversely adjustable toward and away from each other on said transversely extending means, said transversely extending means consisting of a plurality of vertically spaced elongated members, each of said uprights having a plurality of guide units fixed thereon for adjustably receiving adjacent ends of the members, said members each having openings spaced along the length thereof, each of said guide units including a single opening therein with which the member openings are selectively alignable, said means releasably securing said uprights to said transversely extending means including lock means mounted on the uprights releasably engageable through each guide unit opening with a member opening aligned therewith in a manner 10 so as to prevent relative movement between the guide unit and the member, and a pair of control means mounted on the uprights, each control means effecting a simultaneous engagement and disengagement of the lock means on one of the uprights.

IN A DOOR TEMPLATE, A PAIR OF VERTICALLY EXTENDING FRAME BEAMS, MEANS EXTENDING TRANSVERSELY BETWEEN SAID BEAMS, MEANS RELEASABLY SECURING SAID BEAMS TO SAID TRANSVERSELY EXTENDING MEANS, SAID BEAMS TRANSVERSELY ADJUSTABLE TOWARD AND AWAY FROM EACH OTHER ON SAID TRANSVERSELY EXTENDING MEANS, A PAIR OF GUIDE PLATES, ONE EXTENDING SUBSTANTIALLY PARALLEL TO EACH FRAME BEAM AND LATERALLY OUTWARD THEREFROM, ADJUSTABLE MEANS INTERCONNECTING EACH PLATE TO THE ADJOINING BEAM FOR VARYING THE DISTANCE THEREBETWEEN, SAID TRANSVERSELY EXTENDING MEANS CONSISTING OF A PLURALITY OF VERTICALLY SPACED GENERALLY ELONGATED RECTANGULAR MEMBERS, EACH OF SAID BEAMS HAVING A PLURALITY OF SLEEVES FIXED THEREON FOR ADJUSTABLY RECEIVING THE ADJACENT END OF THE MEMBERS, SAID MEANS RELEASABLY SECURING SAID BEAMS TOI SAID TRANSVERSELY EXTENDING MEANS BEING ASSOCIATED WITH EACH SLEEVE FOR SELECTIVELY FIXING THE CORRESPONDING MEMBER IN A PLURALITY OF ADJUSTED POSITIONS THEREIN, AND MEANS FOR EFFECTING A SIMULTANEOUS ENGAGEMENT AND DISENGAGEMENT OF ALL OF THE RELEASABLY SECURING MEANS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SLEEVES ON ONE OF SAID BEAMS.
