SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 320,021, dated June 16, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CLARENCE L. WATSON, of Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in the class of buttons and studs wherein the post is hinged to the shoe, the object of my improvement being to simplify the construction of articles of this character and to further provide a device which shall be economical in construction and durable and efficient in use;and with these ends in view my invention consists in the certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side view of a button embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is adetached viewof the post; and Fig. 4 shows the several parts of the shoe detached.

A represents the head of any desired construction, and B represents the post which is rigidly secured to the central portion of the head upon the inside thereof. The post is preferably formed with the broad base, as shown, and the same gradually tapers, forming the neck 0, the top thereof being provided with the cross head or bar D. This bar is preferably formed, as shown in the drawings, with the upper edge thereof curvedlongitudinally to enable it to conform in shape to the curve of the spring-metal disk H when the latter is bent, as shown in Fig. 2. The bottom of the bar is squarely cut away, thus insuring a square adjustment in the shoe, which is composed of any desired light metal. The shoe consists, essentially, of a cap, I, plate H, and spring-metal disk H. The plate H is provided with the elongated central slot, F, and on each side of the slot are stamped the recesses G, in which recesses is adapted to fit the bar D. The formation of the recess and the bar relatively to each other is such that when the bar is snugly in position in the said recess the upper edge of the bar projects above the surface of the plate H and engages the light plate or spring-metal disk H, located within and forming a part of said shoe. The disk holds the bar firmly in its seat, and when the shoe is partly turned it causes the shoe to immediately assume a position either to one side or the" other of the post. The spring-plate H is held in position on the shoe by means of the cap I, which is adapted to inclose the same, and to which the shoe is secured.

It will be observed that by employing a spring such as I have described that it is impossible for the bar and the spring to become separated, as the two are constantly bearing against each other, and as the spring is circular in shape it is impossible for the same to become dislocated, as its environments are equal on all sides. A spring of this construction is also exceedingly durable from the fact that the same is supplemented by the top cap, against which the same impinged, and from which it receives additional strength and durability.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with a shoe consisting of a plate having recesses and an opening therein, the single spring-metal disk, and the cap, of a button-head and a post rigidly secured thereto and provided at its free end with a cross head or bar, which latter is pivotally held by compression between the recessed plate and disk, all of the above parts constructed and combined substantially as set forth.
