CORN-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,594, dated June 16 1885.
Application filed February 11, 1885.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEVI J. ODELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairbury, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Oorn-Planters, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to an improvement in corn-planters; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line as 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation partly in section. Fig. 4 is a detailed vertical sectional view taken on the line 3 y of Fig. 1.
A represents an actuating-shaft, to which are secured the fixed wheel B and the loose wheel 0.
A tongue, D, is provided at its rear end with a transverse beam, (1, which beam is provided at its ends, on its lower side, with depending brackets d, through which passes the shaft A.

A transverse bar, E, is centrally secured to the under side of the tongue, near its rear end, and is provided at its extremities with pivotal projections e.
F represents a transverse beam, which serves as the frame for the corn-planting mechanism, and is pivoted to the bar E by means of the rods f, which rods are secured at their rear ends to the beam F and at their front ends are pivoted upon the projections 0.
On the ends of the beam F, on its upper side, are secured seed-hoppers G. The bottoms g of these hoppers areprovided with central upwardly-projecting studs, 9, and with circular grooves g". In rear of the stud, in each of the hoppers, on the inner edge of the circular groove, is made an opening, 9
From the under sides of the hoppers depend the seed-tubes H, which are wedge-shaped in horizontal cross-section, and are provided at their lower ends with runners h, which runners are pivoted on the projections e, similarly to the bars f.
By this construction it follows that the beam (No model.)
F is pivoted to the tongue, and that the tongue is pivoted upon the actuating shaft.
To the rear side of the beam (1 is fulcrumed a hand-lever, I, which is bent, as shown, and is provided with an arm, a, which extends rearwardly from the lower end of the lever.
A bracket, K, is secured central-lyto the un der side of the beam F, and projects beyond the front side thereof, and through this pro jecting end of the bracket passes the lowerend of a pin, is, which is pivoted to the arm 1'. A pin or nut secures the pin it on the under side of the bracket, and around said pin is placed a coiled spring, 70, which bears between the upper side of the bracket and the shoulders 7a, with which the pin 70 is provided.
By moving the hand-lever forward the beam F is raised and the runners lifted above the ground. XVhen the runners are at work in the ground when the machine is in operation, the spring 70 keeps them down to their work, but allows the beam F to rise should either of the runners come in contact with a stone or other obstruction, and thus prevent injury to the machine. 7
A rack-pawl, L, is secured to one of the tongue-braces, and engages with a loop or proj ection on the hand-lever, and thereby secures said lever at any desired point.
A drivers seat, M, is secured on the rear end of the tongue, within easy reach of the hand lever.
N represents a shaft, which is j ournaled on the upper side of the beam F, and to the ends of this shaft are fixed miter-pinions a, which mesh with the toothed circular seed-disks O, which are mounted on the studs 9. Each of these seed-disks is provided with a series of seed-cups, 0, which register successively with the openings when the shaft N is rotated.
Above the seeddisks are placed the false bottoms 1?, having seats 1) and side openings,p.
On the shaft Nis fixedachain-wheel, a, and on the shaft A is placed a loose chain-wheel, It. A clutch, r, engages with the chain-wheel, It, and rotates it with the shaft A when the machine is advancing, the chain-wheel being then pressed against the serrations of the clutch by a spring, T; but when the machine is backed the chain-wheel R is idle on the shaft.
An endless chain, S, connects the chainwheels and communicates the motion of the shaft A to the seed-disk-actuating shaft when the machine is drawn forward. The chain S is kept tight on the chain-wheels bya roller,
T, which bears against its under side, the said roller being journaled in a frame, t, that is secured to the under side of the beam F.
Crescent-shaped covering-wings V are secured to the beam F, and work in rear of the seed-tubes.
The rear walls of the seed-tubes are cut away for a suitable distance from the lower ends of the tubes, leaving said tubes open on their rear sides, as at h. Valves W are pivoted to the rear walls of the tubes, as at w, and said valves are connected at their upper ends by a rod, X, as at 00, while their lower ends are curved forwardly and enter the open sides of the seed-tubes, as at 10.
Having thus described my invention, I Claim 1. The combination ofthe aotnating'shaftA, having the driving and supporting wheels, the tongue D, hinged on the shaft A and having th transverse bar E, the runners h, pivoted or hinged to the ends of the bar E, the beam F, supported on the runners, and the planting mechanism and seed-hoppers on said beam, and actuating gearing therefor, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the actuating-shaft A,
having the driving and supporting wheels, the tongue D, hinged on said shaft and having the transverse bar E, the runners h, pivoted or hinged to the ends of the bar E, the beam F, supported on the runners and having the seedhoppers, the seed-disks O in the bottoms of the hoppers, shaft N, having pinions n meshiug with the seed-disks, chain-wheel a on shaft N, wheel R on shaft A, and the connectv ing endless chain S, substantially as described.
