CORN-PLANTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,223, dated June 2, 1885.
Application filed August 22, 1884. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J Asrnn G'ANNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ruthven, in the county of Palo Alto and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gorn Planters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to wheel cornplanters designed to be drawn by horses; and it has for its object to provide an implement of the class referred to that shall possess superior advantagesin point of simplicity, cheapness, durability, and general efficiency; and the invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan View of a eorn-planter embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical; section on the line as x in Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a vertical longitudinal section on the line y y in Fig. 1. Fig. 4. is an elevation of one of the seed-boxes, with its front wall removed. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the seeddisks, and Fig. 6 is a detail view of one of the scatterers. Fig. 7 is a detail view of one of the coverers.
Referring by letter to the accompanying drawings, A designates the outer frame of the planter, and B the inner frame of the planter. Both of these frames are provided with boxes 0, inwhich the axle D is journaled. The inner frame, B, is provided with a transverse rail, E, grooved longitudinally in its under face to receive the axle D, and is tenoned at its ends in the boxes Gof said inner frame, B. A screw is passed up through the axle D into the cross-rail E, to form the connection between the axle and rail E. Washers F areinterposed between the frame A and the wheels G, and the latter revolve on the axle D. The frames A and B, when connected in this manner to the axle, become oscille ting frames, the
journals of the axle being the pivotal points.
The frame A may be provided with a drivers seat, and a lever, H, fulcrumed upon the transverse rail E, engages the rear rail of the inner frame, B, and extends forward to a curved rack, I, at the front of the frame A, and is provided with a spring-actuated pin, 1, which may occupy any one of a series of holes in said curved rack 1'. This lever is within convenient reach of the driver, and is employed to regulate the depth of the cut of the opening-plows, and to elevate them to free them from the ground when desired.
The plows J employed in this planter are shovel-plows, and they are secured to the 1nner frame, B, in the following manner: D1- rectly beneath the axle D two short threaded bolts, K, are passed through holes in the side rails, L, of the inner frame, B, from the outside of said rails L, and these bolts K are provided with nuts K, which are turned upon them from their inner ends. in rear of these bolts K, through holes in said side rails, L, longer threaded bolts M are passed. Upon these bolts M sleeves N, having arms N extending forward at right angles to said sleeves at their outer ends, and shoulders N at their inner ends 011 their front sides, are slipped against the inner faces of the rails L, and notches O in the \upper edges of the arms N engage the short bolts K, and the nuts K are turned up against the arms N, to hold said arms in place. The upper ends of the plowstandards 1 are provided with holes, and the front edges of said standards are straight. The plow-standards P are slipped upon the bolts M and moved outwardly against the inner ends of the sleeves N, the front edges of said standards at the tops of the same resting against the rear faces of the shoulders N Nuts Q are then turned up against the plow standards and hold them firmly in place. Should the plow strike an obstruction, before the plow will break the arms N will be released from their hold on the short bolts K, and the sleeves will turn and permit the plows to pass over said obstruction. Still farther in the rear in the said rails L of the frame B are the longest bolts It, which are passed through said side rails, L, and through the seed-boxes S, which latter are held in place thereon by nuts S. The seed-boxes S are rectangular in shape in cross-section above the frame B, and are provided with sliding cover S. From their rear sides, below the rear rail of the frame B, the seed-boxes S are beveled forward to their lower end nearly to a point. At the lower ends of their rectangular portions the seed-boxes S are provided with bottoms T, which extend nearly to their front walls. Above these bottoms T, in the rear walls of the seed-boxes, are transverse openings T, extending entirely across said rear walls. The front walls have shorter transverse openings T. The seeddisks U are pivoted upon the bottoms T of the seedboxes S, their arms U projecting through the front openings. T", in said boxes, and their rear arms, U, which are angle-arms, projecting through the rear openings, T. The front arms, U, of the oscillating seeddisks are provided with slots V, made vertically through them, and the rear arms, U". are provided with vertical perforations V. The seed-cups V consist of two holes, V made through each seed-disk in front of the pivotal point and at angles of about forty-five degrees on opposite sides therefrom. The discharge-opening in front of the bottom T of each box S is covered by the seed-disk, and above the disk is a cut-off, W, under which the seed-cups work. This cut-off is to prevent the corn from entering the seed-cups when they are beneath it, at which time they discharge the seed into the seed-tubes WW below the bottoms T. The upper end of a pivoted lever, X, enters the slot V in each arm U, said lever X being fulcrumed to the front of the box below the front opening. To the lower end of the pivoted levers X are pivoted the arms X of the scatterers Y, which are secured to the front of the seed-boxes, near their lower ends, by screws Y, passed through slots Y, madein said arms X, into said boxes. The scatterers Z are in the form of hoe-blades bent back and up under the bevel of the seed-boxes. In the rear of each seed-box, but having their arms A attached to the inner faces of said seed-boxes, are the scrapers or coverers 13, their arms being twisted to give the coverers the proper angle of inclination. The arms A of said coverers are slotted at O, to receive the screws E, by which the coverers are rendered adjustable to suit the depth to which the plows are set to cut by adjusting the lever in its rack. In the rear of each coverer, and secured to the outer frame, A, is a roller working in bearings in forked arms of a hinged rod. These rollers follow the coverers and pack the ground upon the covered corn. The scatterers deflect the corn to opposite sides of the furrow alternately the seed-slide is oscillated. The rear arms of the seed-slides are connected by a horizontal bar, D", to which they are pivoted, and this bar I) is operated by a hand-lever, E, fulerumed in a bracket, F, secured to the inner rear corner of one of the seed-boxes, and is operated by hand. This lever may, however, be operated by any of the cheek-rowers that are adapted to oscillate the lever from side to side, thereby dispensing with the services of one man to operate the hand-lever.
This planter plants two rows of corn at one time.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. The combination, with the oscillating frame A, secured to the axle journaled in the wheels and provided with the curved rack at its front, of the inner oscillating frame provided with the short bolts K and nuts K, the longer bolts M, sleeves N, having arms N,with notches in their upper edges, near their forward ends, the shoulders N on the inner ends of said sleeves, the plows having their standards provided with holes near their upper ends, and the nuts 63, for securing said stand-- with laterally-extending bolts K M, in combination with the sleeves carrying the plows and j ournaled on the bolts M, and arms projecting forwardly from the sleeves and fitting under the bolts K, arranged and operating,whereby when the plow strikes an obstruction the arms will be released from the bolts K and work downward, causing the turning of the sleeves to permit the plow to pass over said obstruction, as set forth.
3. The combination,with the seed-box havin g the rectangular upper portion and the forwardly-beveled lower portion, and the front and rear opening and the bottom with discharge-opening at the front side, said bottom and openings being above the seed-tubes, of the oscillating seed-slide pivoted upon said bottom, and having its front and rear arms projecting through said front and rear openings, the lever pivoted to the front of the box and connected with the front arm of the seed slide, and the slotted scatterer pivoted to the front of the seed-box, connected to the lower end of the pivoted lever, and having its blade bent up along the bevel of the box under the seed-tubes, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the oscillating frames secured upon the axle, and means, substantially as described, for operating the said frames, ihe plows secured to the inner frame, the seed-boxes attached to the same near the rear of the plows, scatterers attached to the discharge end of the seed boxes, coverers, also attached to the seed-boxes, and a packingroller mounted in the outer frame in rear of the machine, as set forth.
5. In a corn-planter, the combination, with the seed-boxes and their seed disks or slides, of the herein-described scatterer connectedto the said disks or slides, so as to be actuated by the movement thereof, as and for the purpose set forth.
6. In a corn-planter, the combination,with the seed-boxes and their seed disks or slides, of levers attached to the latter and pivoted to the boxes, and scatterers connected to the levers, as set forth.
