(Cl. 229-74) This invention relates to a label which provides a pocket for containing an enclosure, such as an invoice, statement, and the like, pertaining to a mailing piece on which such label is attached.
A principal object of the invention is to provide a label of this character that may be produced inexpensively with standard envelope making machinery.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a label pocket construction which permits easy insertion of an enclosure prior to application of the label to a mailing piece; to provide a label pocket with upper and lower panels that are interconnected along two adjacent edge portions thereof to form an angular seat or stop to locate the enclosure and leave the opposite edges unconnected for facilitating insertion of the enclosure; to provide the upper panel of the label pocket with projecting portions that overlie edges of the lower panel to close said unconnected sides when the label is pasted onto a mailing piece; and to provide the upper panel with a window opening for exposing a mailing address on the enclosure.
When label pockets are applied to rather thick and rigid mailing pieces, they are difiicult to open for removal of the enclosure because it is difficult to lift an opening flap or to get a letter opener or the like into the pocket without damaging the enclosure. Therefore, further objects of the invention are to cover the window opening by a patch having a portion capable of being seen through fixed to the inner face of the upper panel, and which has a loose gripping portion to facilitate grasping thereof for making an opening in the pocket as the side edges of the patch guide the lines of tear; and to provide the lower panel with an extension that underlies the gripping portion of the window patch to prevent sticking thereof to the mailing piece when paste or other adhesive is applied for securing the label to the mailing piece.
In accomplishing these and other objects of the invention, we have provided improved structure, the preferred forms of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the face side of a label pocket constructed in accordance with one form of the present invention, and showing attachment thereof to a mailing piece.
FIG. 2 is a similar view showing the manner in which the gripping portion of the window patch is pulled upwardly and backwardly longitudinally over the window opening, so that the side edges of the patch guide the lines of tear, thereby opening up a relatively wide opening across the face of the label to permit removal of the enclosure.
FIG. 3 is a plan view of the inner face of a blank from which the label pocket is folded, and showing the window patch applied thereto.
FIG. 4 is a plan view of the label pocket showing the back face thereof which is to be attached to a mailing piece by paste or other adhesive.

Referring more in detail to the drawings, and first the form of the invention illustrated in FIGS. 1 to inclusive:

The slits l8 and 19 prefera terminate near the longitudinal side edges 26 and 27 the patch, and the adhesive 24 preferably terminates side of the slits l8 and 19, so that when the tab is pulI outwardly from the recess 14 the slits 18 and 19 st tears which continue along the edges 26 and 27 of patch when the label pocket is to be opened, as la described.
The back panel 5 is shaped at the edge thereof oppos the fold 3 so that the corners have notches 28 and (FIGS. 3 and 4) to expose face portions of the ext sions 12 and 13 of the panel 4, but the intermediate p tion 30 covers the portion of the patch that provides pull tab 25, to prevent any possibility of the paste or otl adhesive that is used in attaching the completed la pocket to a mailing piece from contacting the pull t- In order to further protect the pull tab, the outer edge thereof terminates short of the edge 32 of the portion 1 he patch 23 may be cut and applied to the blank, the panel 5 folded over the front panel 4, and the flap lded over to be sealed with the adhesive 9 by means tandard envelope making machinery, to provide the l pocket illustrated in FIG. 4.

'hen the label is applied, the pocket 33 is securely :d to retain the enclosure 34 and without smearing :of with paste. The pull tab also remains clean free of paste because it is protected by the underlying ision of the back panel, as shown in FIGS. 4 6.
hen the mailing piece 36 is received by the addressee, enclosure is easily removed by grasping the loose portion 25 of the patch 23 between the thumb and finger and pulling it upwardly within the recess 14, to e the slits 18 and 19 to start tears along the side s 26 and 27 of the patch. The pull on the tab 25 is inued toward the opposite side of the label pocket, town in FIG. 2, with the side edges of the patch conng to guide the lines of tear. When the tears are comd, a relatively large opening 37 is formed through h the enclosure is readily removed (FIG. 2).

In this form of the invention, the seam provided by the adhesive 51 and the fold 38 provides the closed sides of the pocket. Thus the construction is simplified through elimination of the flap 6 of the first described form of the invention. Otherwise, the construction follows that of the first described form of the invention.
The enclosure 58 is placed in the pocket 59 between the front and back panels through the free edges thereof until it seats in the fold 38 and the seam that is effected by the adhesive 51. In this position the enclosure 58, which is outlined in dotted lines, FIG. 8, is completely protected by the panel as.
In applying the label pocket to a mailing piece so, the surface 51 of the panel 46 and the portions of the panel 39 that project beyond the edges thereof are coated with a paste or other adhesive. The label pocket is then placed upon the mailing piece 69 and pressed in position, as shown in FIG. 9. Or, like in the first form, the paste may be applied to the face of the mailing piece and the label pocket pressed upon the wet paste.
The enclosure 58 is removed in the manner described in the first form of the invention. The loose tab 49 is gripped between the thumb and forefinger and pulled upwardly through the recess 46 so that the slits 13 and 19 start tears of the front panel 33 and which continue along the side edges of the window patch 48 as the tab 49 is V pulled across the window opening.

1. A label pocket for application to a mailing piece and the like, said label pocket including upper and lower generally rectangular panels having two side edges thereof interconnected to provide a pocket between said panels and open at the other two side edges for insertion of an enclosure into said pocket, the upper of said panels having marginal portions at the open edges thereof projecting over corresponding edges of the lower panel to provide faces cooperating with the under face of the lower panel for closing said insert opening when said faces are secured to a mailing piece, a recess in one of the prog'ecting marginal portions of the upper panel, a patch inside the pocket having an end thereof extending freely into said recess, and adhesive between said patch and said upper panel to seal the patch to the upper panel, said free end of the patch providing a tab for grasping and pulling the patch in a reverse direction over the upper panel for producing lines of tear in the upper panel guided by side edges of said patch to produce a removal opening in the upper panel at a point from the recess through which an enclosure is removed from the pocket after the label pocket has been applied to the mailing piece. 2 A label pocket for application to a mailing piece and the like, said label pocket including upper and lower generally rectangular panels having two side edges thereof interconnected to provide a pocket between said panels and open at the other two side edges for insertion of an enclosure into said pocket, the upper of said panels having marginal portions at the open edges thereof projecting over corresponding edges of the lower panel to provide faces cooperating with the under face of the lower panel for closing said insert opening when said faces are secured to a mailing piece by an adhesive,
a recess in one of the projecting marginal edges,
9. patch inside of the pocket, and
an adhesive securing said patch to the upper panel,
said patch having an end thereof extending into said recess to provide a tab for pulling the patch in a reverse direction over the upper panel for producing lines of tear in the upper panel guided by side edges of said patch to produce a removal opening in the upper panel for removal of an enclosur from said pocket after the label pocket is applied to the mailing piece,
and said lower panel having an extension underlying the recess for protecting the pull tab from tie adhesive used in applying the label pocnet to the mailing piece.
3. A label pocket for application to a mailing piece and the like, said label pocket including upper and lower generally rectangular panels having two side edges thereof interconnected to provide a pocket between said panels and open at the other two side edges for insertion of an enclosure into said pocket,
the upper of said panels having marginal portions at the open edges thereof projecting over corresponding edges of the lower panel to provide faces cooperating with the under face of the lower panel for closing said insert opening when said faces are secured to a mailing piece upon appli cation of the label pocket,
a window opening in the upper panel,
a recess in one of the projecting marginal edges of the upper panel in alignment with the window opening, and
a patch capable of being seen through covering the window opening from the inside or" the pocket having an end thereof extending into said recess to provide a free tab for grasping and pulling the patch in a reverse direction over the window opening for producing lines of tear in the upper panel uided by side edges of said patch when an enclosure is to be removed afer application of the label pocket.
4. A label pocket for application to a mailing piece and the like to carry an enclosure, said label pocket including upper and lower generally rectangular panels interconnected along one of their edges by an integral fold,
the upper of said panels having marginal portions at other edges thereof projecting over corresponding edges of the lower panel to provide faces cooperating with the under face of the lower panel for sealing contact with a face of a mailing piece by means of an adhesive when the label pocket is to be applied,
means connecting said panels together at one end of the fold to cooperate with said fold in closing two sides of a pocket between said panels and forming an angular seat for an enclosure to be inserted in said pocket,
a window opening for exposing an address carried on the enclosure,
a recess in one of the projecting marginal edges and aligned with the window opening, and
a patch capable of being seen through covering the window opening from the inside and having an end thereof extending into said recess to provide a tab for grasping and pulling the patch in a direction over the window opening for causing side edges or the patch to produce guided lines of tear across the upper panel when an enclosure is to be removed after application of the label pocket.

A label pocket for application to a mailing piece and the like as described in claim 4, and including an extension on the lower panel underlying the recess to protect the tab from contact with adhesive wl the label pocket is 6. said lower panel having a portion underlying said lo end portion of the patch for protecting the loose e portion of the patch from paste used in applying label pocket to the mailing piece, whereby said 10 end portion remains loose and provides a pull adapted to be pulled reversely over the upper pa for tearing the upper panel in providing an open for said pocket when removing the enclosure.
7. A label pocket adapted to be pasted to a mail piece for containing an enclosure, said label pocket or prising an upper panel having a Window opening and a rec spaced from the window opening and located ii marginal edge of said upper panel substantially aligning registry with the Window opening,
a transparent patch covering the window opening the under face or" the upper panel and having an t portion extending loosely into the recess of the up panel,
adhesive connecting marginal edges of the portion the patch that covers the window opening to under face of the upper panel, and
a lower panel having a portion extending across recess of the upper panel and underlying said lo end portion of the patch to prot ct said loose t portion from paste used in securing said label pocl whereby said loose end portion provides a pull adapted to be pulled from said recess and rovers over the upper panel for tearing through the up panel in providing an opening for said panel wl removing the enclosure.
8. A label pocket adapted to be pasted to a mail piece for containing an enclosure, said label pocket or prising an upper panel having a window opening therein,
a lower panel fixed to the upper panel to provide the between a pocket for an enclosure having an add: to appear in the window opening,
a transparent patch covering the window opening the inner face side of the upper panel and havin loose end portion projecting from the pocket,
adhesive connecting marginal edges of the patch marginal edges of the upper panel along the wind opening, and
said lower panel having a portion underlying said 10 end portion of the patch for protecting the loose portion of the patch from paste used in applying label pocket to the mailing piece, whereby said lo end portion remains loose and provides a pull adapted to be pulled reversely over the Wind opening for tearing the upper panel along said hesive in providing an opening in said pocket wl removing the enclosure.

Claims (1)

1. A LABEL POCKET FOR APPLICATION TO A MAILING PIECE AND THE LIKE, SAID LABEL POCKET INCLUDING UPPER AND LOWER GENERALLY RECTANGULAR PANELS HAVING TWO SIDE EDGES THEREOF INTERCONNECTED TO PROVIDE A POCKET BETWEEN SAID PANELS AND OPEN AT THE OTHER TWO SIDE EDGES FOR INSERTION OF AN ENCLOSURE INTO SAID POCKET, THE UPPER OF SAID PANELS HAVING MARGINAL PORTIONS AT THE OPEN EDGES THEREOF PROJECTING OVER CORRESPONDING EDGES OF THE LOWER PANEL TO PROVIDE FACES COOPERATING WITH THE UNDEER FACE OF THE LOWER PANEL FOR CLOSING SAID INSERT OPENING WHEN SAID FACES ARE SECURED TO A MAILING PIECE. A RECESS IN ONE OF THE PROJECTING MARGINAL PORTIONS OF THE UPPER PANEL, A PATCH INSIDE THE POCKET HAVING AN END THEREOF EXTENDING FREELY INTO SAID RECESS, AND ADHESIVE BETWEEN SAID PATCH AND SAID UPPER PANEL TO SEAL THE PATCH TO THE UPPER PANEL, SAID FREE END OF THE PATCH PROVIDING A TAB FOR GRASPING AND PULLING THE PATCH IN A REVERSE DIRECTION OVER THE UPPER PANEL FOR PRODUCTION LINES OF TEAR IN THE UPPER PANEL GUIDED BY SIDE EDGES OF SAID PATCH TO PRODUCE A REMOVAL OPENING IN THE UPPER PANEL AT A POINT FROM THE RECESS THROUGH WHICH AN ENCLOSURE IS REMOVED FROM THE POCKET AFTER THE LABEL POCKET HAS BEEN APPLIED TO THE MAILING PIECE.
