FLY-WHEEL CLUTCH.
PLCIFCATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,968, dated June 16, 1885.
Application filed July 19, 1884.
To @ZZ whom t/.mcty concern:
Be it known that I, WARREN L. FIsH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State 0f New Jersey, have invented certain new and usef'ul Improvements in Clutches for Fly-Wheels for SewingMachines; and I do hereby'declare the following to be a full, clear',and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains-to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
rIhis invention relates to certain modifications and improvements made in a device a patent for which was granted to `me on the 15th day of April, 1879, No. 214,289, the object of said invention being to enable the bobbin-winding attachment of the sewing-ina` chine to be 4operated from the driving mechanism of the said sewingmachine while the sewing mechanism remains motionless.
rI`he invention consists in the arrangements and combinations of parts substantially as will be hereinafter set forth, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.
Referring to the two sheets of drawings, in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the several figures, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sewing-ma chine flywheel and pulley combined, having certain clutching mechanism connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof.l Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of a certain washer, and Fig. 4 is a section thereof through line x. Fig. 5 is a plan of a cap oriinger-piece, showing the side thereof toward the fly-wheel. Fig. 6, Sheet 2, is asectional view showing a modified construction of the device. Figs. 7 and 8 are respectively plans of a washer and finger-piece employed in said modified construction, and Fig. 9 is a sectional view showing a modified form of cap.
The arrangements of parts preferred in carrying out my invention are illustrated in Figs. l and 2, in which a is a flanged sleeve arranged on the driving-shaft A, to revolve therewith, a suitable set-screw, a', or other device, being provided for the purpose. Upon said sleeve the combined fly and pulley wheel (No model.)
contact therewith, as will be understood. The
ysaid sleeve projects beyond the opposite side of the wheel, where it is threaded to receive a claniping-screw, nut, cap, or fingenpiece, c. Around said projecting portion of, the sleeve, and between said finger-piece and the side of the wheel,is arrangeda washer, d, constructed so as to be carried around with the said sleeve, the construction I prefer being as shown `in Figs. 3 and 5, in which d is shown to be a crossbar adapted to be inserted in a cross-slot, c4, in the end of the sleeve or the shaft A. The outer edge or face of said washer is provided with suitable projections or stops, d, forming recesses therebetween,in one of which a projection, lug, or Vpintle, c', of the capcis adapted to be inserted, so that the lmovement of said cap or finger-piece on the sleeve is limited, and is thus prevented from falling off by unscrewing. The said projection c is preferably a screw, and is caused to project into the recess between the stops d after the cap or finger-piece is screwed up. It will be understood that the recess between the stops is sufficiently extended to allow enough action to clamp the wheel, whei`i the same is used lin sewing, or to loosen said wheel so that it may freely move independent of` the shaft A in winding the bobbin.
I do not, as before intimated, wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact con# struction and arrangements of parts shown in Figs. 1 and 2, inasmuch as various changes can be made without departing from the spirit of this invention. For example, the sleeve ma1 be dispensed with, as in Fig. 6, theflange a being secured to the shaft, which latter in that case may be threaded to receive the finger-piece. The washer may be dispensed with, in which case the limiting projections or stops may be transferred to theshaft; or the washer may be changed in shape or construction, as in Figs. v6 and 7 to prevent its turning upon the shaft independent thereof.
The projections d may be unequally disposed, asin Fig. 3, or arranged at irregular intervals on the edge or face of the washer. When the cap or finger-piece is screwed down, should one of the said stops fall in the path IOO of the screw c', so that the latter would be prevented from entering the recess, or so close to one of said stops as not to allow sufficient play to t-he cap and enable the same to properly fasten or unfasten the wheel, by reversing the position of said washer the relations of' the lugs or stops are changed with respect to t-he said screw c', and the objection before mentioned is avoided. Should said reversal still be insufhcient, the lug or stop d is made very slight in size, so that it can be readily knocked oh.
I may provide the finger-piece with a setscrew to accomplish substantiall y the same object.
I do not wish to be understood as claiming anything shown or described in my previous patent, above mentioned.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is- 1. In a sewing-machine, the comblnation of a hanged and threaded shaft or sleeve, a loose belt pulley, and a threaded finger-piece adapted to clamp said pulley, substantially as and for thepurposes set forth.
2. In a sewing-machine, the flanged and threaded sleeve, Aand a screw finger-piece adapted to clamp the pulley, substantially as set forth.
3. In a sewing-machine, the combination,
with the combined pulley and fly wheel and the shaft A, of the flanged and threaded sleeve carrying the said wheel, land a threaded fingerpiece, arranged and operating substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. the combination, with the hanged sleeve and the washer thereof, of a tightening-cap provided with a projection adapted to limit the play of said cap, substantially as described.
8. In sewing-machine clutches forhy-wheels, the combination, with the hanged sleeve and the washer thereof, of a tightening-cap pro- Y provided with a set-screw or pin projecting through the same to said sleeve or washer, as set forth.
10. The combination of a flanged sleeve having a screw-threaded end and capable of be ing placed upon and secured to the main shaft of a sewing'machine and of receiving a loose pulley, and a screw-clamping nut or hngerpiece having a set-screw or pin projecting through the same inwardly toward the washer or sleeve to enter a limiting-recess in said washer, sleeve, or shaft, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
11. In a sewingunachine, the combination of' a flanged sleeve having a screw-threaded end and adapted to be secured to the main shaft ofl a sewing-machine, the fly or band wheel fitting loosely upon said sleeve, a washer provided with pins or projections on the side or face thereof' and constructed or adapted to hold a fixed relation with said sleeve or shaft, and a cap having a set-screw or limiting-pin, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
