EUGENE SPECHT AND LOUISv FIX, OF MILWAUKEE, W'ISCONSIN.
H'EATI NG-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 319,934, dated June 9,1885.
Application lerl February 1, 1884.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EUGENE SPncrrr and LoUIs FIX, citizens of the United States, residing at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating- S'toves; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of our invention is in a coal-burning stove to compactly and conveniently combine the characteristics both of a stove, a furnace, and Ventilating appara-tus, which we accomplish by providing a well-arranged combustion-chamber and ash-removing mechanism, in connection with suitably arranged hot-air chambers and Ventilating mechanism.
Referring to the drawings accompanying this specitication, Figure l is a front view of our heatingestove. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view ofthe same on theline .fvztot Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a View from above of a cross-section on a line ofy y of Figs. l and 2. Fig. 4 is a view from below of 'a cross-section on a line ofz e of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a side view ot' our heating-stove with the jacket or outer case removed. Fig. 6is arear view of same. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the cold-air duct. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view from front to rear of that portion of our stove below the combustion-chamber. Fig. 9 is a view from above of a cross-section at the bottom of the combustion-chamber.
The magazine or combustion-chamber A has the adjustable sliding grate a, the rearwardlyinclined front portion, b, the permanentlyaffixed grate c, and extending therefrom the tubular outward passage d, adj ustably opened or closed by the transparent door e, t-he smokepipe f, gas-pipe g, and usual fuel-admitting adjustable cover, h.
The ash-removing mechanism consists of the semicircular adjustable sliding grate a, supported in the horizontal grooves fi, rigidly-at 5o vtached rod-handle j, the chamber k, the opening therefrom, and door Z, and also the opening (No model.)
ning of the car, and lie against the rear side of 55 the opening through the car-iioor in which it swings, thereby directing cold air from below in front up into the air-chamber, the air-chamber bottom,D,having openings and adjustable sliding gates s, with their rigidly-attached rod-handle t, adapted, by the opening or closing of said apertures, to regulate the amount of cold air received. The vertical partition u, the circular horizontal partition t, the upwardly-extending and spirally-curving partition-wings w, the chamber 2, open at the top continuously from the chamber at the rear, in-y side the wings lw, and extending downwardly to and opening outwardly into and continuing asl the hot-air pipe 3, which pipe 3 may run the length ofthe room or car, andbeingfopen at its outer extremity, discharges the heated air into the room orl car.
The grate a, by its rod-handle j and the grooves i, is adapted both to be shaken from side to side for sifting out the ashes, the handlej moving radially in the slot 4in the outer case, and also to be withdrawnzto the front from the opening in the bottom of the combustion-chamber, allowing the contents of the combustion-chamber to fall through the same, the rearwardly-inclined part b being provided to furnish unoccupied space at the bottom in front to which to withdraw said grate, and also to carry the contents of the combustionchamber rearwardly to said grate-opening a.
The grate c, tubular opening cl, and transparent door e are adapted for applying a match in starting a tire in the combustion-chamber, and for obtaining the illuminating effect of the glowing coals in the combustion-chamber after the fire is lighted.
IOO
The ue g is adapted to carry oif smoke and unconsumed gases in connection with the smoke-pipe f.
From the chamber k ashes may be removed either,` through the doorlor through the opening m and chute o.
The arrangement of the air-chambers is such that the cold air coming in at theopenings s, as it is heated, rises up in front ofthe partition- Wings w, and passes over the top of them and down at the rear into the chamber 2 and out through pipe 3, the air being thus exposed to a great extent of heating-surface, becoming thereby thoroughly warmed, and also by said arrangementsecuring an ample supply of fresh air to the apartment or car into which the hotair pipe 3 opens.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a heating-stove, the hot-air chambers B B, provided with cold-air due C, having automatically-operating gate r, adjustable sliding gates s, upwardly extending and spirallycurving partition-Wings w, and downwardlyextending and outwardly-opening chamber 2, in combination with chamber A, having grated bottom a, and smokepipe f, adapted for combustion of fuel, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
