Description

lNrTE STATES JEAN A. MATHIEU, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PROCESS OF DRAWlNG AND GALVANIZlNG WIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,918, dated June 9, 1885.
Application filed May 31, 1882.
1'0 (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEAN A. MATHIEU, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State 01 Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Process of Drawing and Galvanzing Wire, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention consists in the process for drawing and galvanizing wire, or covering wire with other metals, hereinafter described and claimed.
The wire is drawn in the usual manner through a draw plate, and the process of drawing the wire now in common use need not be described.
My improved process consists in passing the wire to be drawn through a mixture of acetate of zinc, acetate of soda, and acetate of potash in equal or nearly equal proportions, either in a melted state or in solution with Water. The mixture will deposit a thicker coating of zinc when used in a molten state than when used in a solution with water, and I therefore prefer 'to use it in solution for fine wire and molten desired, and the only object is to lubricate the wire, acetate of soda or potash, separately or (No specimens.)
mixed, may be used. If acetate of copper or any other metal be used in lieu of acetate of zinc, the wire will be coated with the metal contained in such acetate. The proportions of the acetates of zinc and potash should be varied according to the diameter of the wire. When the wire is large, the proportion of acetate of potash should be increased; when small, the proportion of acetate of zinc should be increased. This increase may vary up to forty per cent. of the normal proportion. For wire of oneeighth of an inch in diameter the mixture should be of equal or nearly equal amounts of the ingredients named.
1 do not here claim, broadly, the process of drawing wire, consisting in passing the wire before it reaches the draw-plate through acetate of soda or acetate of potash, or a mixture of both, whereby the wire is lubricated, as such will constitute the subject-matter of a separate application for Letters Patent.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein -described process of drawing and coating Wire with metal, consisting in passing the wire before it reaches the drawplate through a mixture of acetate of soda and acetate of pot-ash and acetate of zinc, either in a molten state or in solution with water.
JEAN A. MATHIEU.
