SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,812, dated une 9, 1885. Application filed March 30, 1835. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JENS PETER HANSEN, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Odense, in the Kingdom of Denmark, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the'invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to'make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my improved machine for sharpening saws. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a front view.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
This invention relates to machines for sharpening band and other saws, and it has for its object to provide a machine of this class which shall possess superior advantages in point of simplicity, durability, and general efficiency.
With these ends in view, the invention consists in theimproved construction and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A designates the base of the machine, which is provided near its rear end with uprights B B, having bearings for the transverse main shaft 0. Bearings D D are also provided for alongitudinal shaft, E, which is driven by the main shaft 0 by means of bevel-gear F.
The saw, during operation, is held in a clamp,
consisting of a rigid jaw, G, and a curved spring, H, arranged to bear against the same in such a manner as to hold the saw securely, without preventing it from being moved laterall y, as the filing progresses.
I is a rectangular frame, arranged to slide vertically in suitable guides underneath the base. Said frame is provided with rods J J, extending upwardly through suitable openings in the base and partly accommodated in suitable recesses,K K,in the fixed j aw of the clamp so that the saw-blade, when placed in position in the latter, shall rest upon the upper ends of the said rods, which, by adjusting the frame I, may be raised or lowered so as to support the saw at any desired elevation, or in its proper position with relation to the file.
L is a longitudinal shaft, journaled in suitable bearings under the base, and having an eccentric ring or disk M working in the frame I. The outer end of the shaft L has ahandwheel, N, by means of which it may be manipulated; and it is partly screw-threaded, as at O, and provided with a thumb-nut, P, whereby it may be retained securely in any position to which it may be adjusted,'as' well as the frame I, which may be raised or lowered thereby.
Q designates a file-holding clamp of suitable construction,in which the file R is secured. Said clamp is provided with laterally-extending friction-rollers, whereby it is held and guided in a slot, S, in an arm, T, which is suitably pivoted upon a bolt, U, near the rear end of the frame. 'The file -holder is connected by apitman, V, with a wrist-pin, WV, upon a disk, X, at one end of the main shaft 0, by which a reciprocating motion will thus be imparted to the said file-holder.
The movement in an upward direction of the pivoted arm T is limited by means of a setscrew, Y, mounted in the outer end of a springarm, Z, which is suitably attached to the frame. Thesaid arm rests upon and is operated by a set-screw, A, adjustable in the upper end of a rod, B,arranged to slide verticallyinasuitable bearing formed upon the base, and supported upon one end of a lever, O, pivoted underneath thebase or table. The forward end of the said lever supports another vertically-sliding rod, D, the upper end of whichis provided with a friction-roller, E, arranged to bear against the periphery of a disk, F, mounted eccentrically upon the front end of the shaft E.
Pivoted eccentrically to the face of the disk F is an arm or pointer, G, the outer end of which has a segmental slot, H, through which passes a set-screw, 1, whereby the said arm may be retained securely in any position to which it may be adjusted.
Pivoted to the face of the arm G is a dog or pawl, J, adapted to engage the teeth of the saw-blade so as to feed thelatter the space of one tooth for each revolution. The stroke of the dog or pawl may be regulated so as to correspond with the fineness of the saw-teeth by properly adjusting the arm G, and an index may be provided to indicate the length of stroke at any point to which the arm G may be adjusted.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed, the operation and advantages of this invention will be readily understood.
The main shaft may be driven either by hand or by any suitable power, and is for the latter purpose provided with a fixed and a loose pulley. When the shaft 0 revolves, the disk X by the pitman V will move the fileholder in a forward direction. While this forward motion takes place the pivoted arm '1 is depressed, thus causing the file to engage the space between two saw-teeth. When the rearward movement of the file-holder begins, the lever G will be vibrated by the eccentric disk F, thus raising the pivoted arm '1 and lifting the file-holder and file out of contact with the saw. At the same time the pawl J engages the saw, feeding the latter forward the space of one tooth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. In a machine for sharpening saws, the herein-described saw holding device, the same consisting of a fixed or rigid jaw, and a curved spring bearing with its curved side against the face of the said jaw, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
2. In a machine for sharpening saws, the combination,with the saw-holding device, consisting of a fixed jaw and a bent spring bearing against the face of the same, of the vertically-adjustable saw-rest, consisting of a, vertically-sliding frame having rods fitting in recesses in the face of the holding-jaw,and mechanism for vertically adjusting and retaining the said frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
to bear against the upper side of a vibrating arm, a vertically-sliding rod having a set-screw supporting the said vibrating arm and resting upon one arm of a lever, a vertically-sliding rod resting upon the other arm of said lever and having a friction-roller at its upper end, and an eccentric disk arranged to bear against the latter, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose hereinset forth.
5. In a machine for sharpening saws, the herein-described device for feeding the sawblade, the same comprising an arm pivoted to a revolving disk, and having at its outer end a pointer and a segmental slot, a set-screw passing through said slot into the face of the disk for the purpose of retaining the arm in any position to which it may be adjusted, and a dog or pawl pivoted to the face of the said arm, and adapted to engage the teeth of the sawblade, substantially as herein described, for the purpose set forth.
