(Cl. 206-78) This invention comprises a new and improved display package adapted to be formed or set up from a blank or blanks of cardboard or other sheet material.

The general object of the invention is to provide a package in which one or more articles of merchandise may be securely packed and protected for shipment and in handling and alsodisplayed in an attractive and conspicuous manner upon the counter or in the show windows of various retail outlets.

The package of the invention is herein disclosed in its application to the packaging and displaying of a can of a toiletry commodity and a safety razor case, although it has a wider field of use for numerous other articles.

Important features of the package lie in its organization for securing a flanged can therein in such a manner as to expose the can to practically unobstructed view while at the same time locking it against displacement or pilfering. To this end the package is organized to present an upright multi-ply back having forwardly extending overlapping base sections of which one is a locking section apertured to fit snugly the body of the can above a bottom flange thereof. The plies of the back, or at least one of them, presents a forwardly and downwardly inclined section having an oval aperture through which passes the body of the can at a substantial height above its base. The can is thus locked at its base and held securely at a higher point against displacement from the back of the package.

These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings in which:

The blank as shown in FIG. l may be of cardboard or the like comprising two substantially square sections 10 and 11 set off from each other by a scored fold line 12. In the section 11 is cut a rectangular locking tongue 13 directed toward the fold line 12 or upwardly in the assembled package. At its lower edge as seen in FIG. 1 the section 11 merges into a flange 14 which is defined in part by a scored fold line and in the assembled package is adapted to be bent forwardly and at right angles to the section 11. A rectangular section 15 is partially separated from the rest of the section 11 and provided with an oval aperture 16. The section 15 merges into a slightly tapered base section 17 provided with a barbed locking tongue 13 at its outer edge.

In the section 10 is cut a transverse slit 20 so located as to receive the locking tongue 1S of the other section when the two are folded together and downwardly from the fold line 12. The section 10 also has a rectangular tongue 19 cut therein directed toward the fold line 12 and in a position to coincide with the tongue 13 of the section 11.

The section 10 merges into a flange 21 corresponding to the flange 14 and defined in part by a scored fold line.

The flange 21 merges into an outwardly extending rectangular section 23 having an oval aperture 24 therein and finally the section 23 terminates in a flange 25 which is set oil by another scored fold line.

The blank of FIG. 1 may be folded to contain andV display a safety razor case which as best shown in FIGS. 2 and 3 includes a transparent cover 30 and a base 31 having vertical undercut Ways 32formed on its rear face as best shown in FIG. 5. The base has also a pair of rearwardly projecting lugs 33 located slightly above the guideway 32 and a transverse ledge 34 below the guideway. The base 31 is preferably molded of polyethylene or other suitable synthetic resin. This case is mounted on one side of the assembled package upon the

13 and 19 as will be presently explained while a can 40 of aerosol shaving cream or other toiletry commodity is secured in the other side of the assembled package. The can 40 is provided with a screw cap 41 and with a slightly projecting bottom flange 42. The diameter ofthe can 40 is such that it makes a snug fit in the locking aperture 22 While its bottom flange 42 is locked in position between the flange 21 and the flange 17.

In assembling the package with the articles above described the blank is first folded on the line 12 and the flange 21 turned forwardly at right angles with the section 23 inclined upwardly and rearwardly so that the body of the can may be inserted up through the circular aperture 22 and the oval aperture 24. In this operation the flange 25 is turned downwardly in contact with the inner face of the section 10.

Before the can 40 is inserted the base flange 14 of the section 11 is folded forwardly at right angles as shown in FIG. 3. The section 15 is also inclined forwardly and downwardly so that the oval aperture 16 registers with the aperture 24 so that the body of the can 40 may be passed upwardly through these registering apertures. The base section 17 is also folded rearwardly beneath the flange 42 of the can and the locking tongue 18 is folded upwardly and interlocked with the transverse slit 20 of the section 19. It will be seen that in the manner described the package now has an upright two-ply back portion formed by the sections 10 and 11, a double base section formed by the

14, 21 and the base section 17. The safety razor case is now assembled by slipping into its guideway 32 the rectangular tongue of the back section 1t). In this operation the upper edge of the tongue 19 is sprung inwardly and cornes into positive engagement with the lugs 33 which project from the back of the base 31. The case is thus locked positively against upward movement in the package.

Meanwhile the tongue 13 of the back section 11 has been folded downwardly as shown in FIG. 6 and engages the transverse ledge 34 of the case, thus positively locking the latter against downward movement. The base 31 is of course held against separation from the multi-ply back by engagement of the tongue 19 in the guideway 32.

Having thus disclosed my invention and described in detail illustrative embodiments thereof, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A display package comprising an upright ply having a forwardly extending base flange with a circular aperture and a rearwardly and uprightly inclined section with an oval aperture therein, in combination with a can having a bottom flange larger than the circular aperture, the

can extending upwardly through the circular aperature of said base flange and the oval aperture of the said inclined section and so retained in position before said upright ply, and supporting means extending beneath said can and connected to said ply. Y

2. A display package comprising an upright ply having a forwardly extending base flange with a circular locking aperture therein and a section inclined upwardly and rearwardly from the -base ange and provided with an oval aperture, in combination with a can, having a bottom flange locked beneath said base llange, the can .extending upwardly through the circular aperture and the oval aperture and said inclined section merging into a flap turned downwardly in contact with the upright ply, and a second upright ply disposed in contact with said rst mentioned ply and merging into a 'downwardly and forwardly inclined section having an oval aperture registering with that of said rearwardly inclined section and having a portion extending rearwardly to underlie said circular locking aperture to form a support for the bottom of said can. 3. A display package comprising a two-ply upright back portion of which one ply merges into a forwardly extending base flange with a circular locking aperture, a section rearwardly and upwardly inclined from the base flange and having an oval aperture, the other of said plies merging into a section forwardly and downwardly inclined and laminated with said rearwardlyV and upwardly inclined section and having a registering oval aperture and merging into a rearwardly extending base section which underlies the locking aperture of the base ange of the ply rst mentioned and merges into a locking tongue connecting it to the back portion thereof; in combination with a can having a bottom ange larger than said circular locking aperture, the base of said can being supported on said rearwardly extending base section and said ilange being positioned under said locking aperture and the body of said can extending through said oval apertures. 4. Claims

1. A DISPLAY PACKAGE COMPRISING AN UPRIGHT PLY HAVING A FORWARDLY EXTENDING BASE FLANGE WITH A CIRCULAR APERTURE AND A REARWARDLY AND UPRIGHTLY INCLINED SECTION WITH AN OVAL APERTURE THEREIN, A COMBINATION WITH A CAN HAVING A BOTTOM FLANGE LARGER THAN THECIRCULAR APERTURE, THE CAN EXTENDING UPWARDLY THROUGH THE CIRCULAR APERATURE OF SAID BASE FLANGE AND THE OVAL APERTURE OF THE SAID INCLINED SECTION AND SO RETAINED IN POSITION BEFORE SAID UPRIGHT PLY, AND SUPPORTING MEANS EXTENDING BENEATH SAID CAN AND CONNECTED TO SAID PLY.
