EXERCISING-NIACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 319,686, dated June 9, .1885.

To all whom t may concern:
employed for exercising the muscles, especially those of the arms and back, and the object of the invention is to provide a convenient device for indoor exercise.
The invention consists in constructing an apparatus in substantially the following man- Upon a suitable stationary frame there is carried a pivoted arm provided with a suitable handle, designed to extend horizontally above the head of the person using the apparatus and within reach of the outstretched hands. rlhis handle and its supporting arm or crank are so constructed that the arms may be thrown forward, carrying the handle downward with it. It is desired, however, that the handle shall offer a certain amount of resistance to this movement, and for this purpose a balance-wheel is placed in the lower portion of the machine, and coupled with the axis of the arm or crank by means of suitable mechanical connections which, when the arm or crank is moved downward, cause the balancewheel to be revolved against the force of suitable yielding springs which are placed under increased tension as the wheel is revolved by the forward movement of the arm and handle. When the handle is released, however, the springs tend to return the wheel to its normal position, again elevating the handle and arm.
The apparatus is provided also with a suitable rest for the back and shoulders of the per son exercising, and this rest is rendered adjustable in a convenient manner.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a front elevation of an exercising-machine embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the machine.
Referring to the figures, A represents a suitable base, which is preferably supported upon three supports, a', a2, and ai.v rlwo standards, B and B2, extend from the base A vertically,
and between the upper ends of the same there is carried an arbor or shaft, C, upon whichis carried a suitable arm or crank, D. At they extremity of the arm or crank D there is placed a handle, d, extending laterally a sufficient distance to allow the person employing the machine to st-and beneath it and to grasp that it may turn downward in the direction indicated by the arrow.
' For the purpose of affording a resistance to the movements of the same, and thereby securing the required amount of exercise for the operator, a balance-wheel, E, is supported upon a suitable shaft, e, between the lower portions of the uprights B and B2. Upon the axis e of the wheel E there are carried two drums, f and f`l,which are designed to receive the cords e3 and et, respectively` These cords extend from corresponding drums or pulleywheels, e5 and es, which are carried upon the shaft or arbor C. One of the cords e3, however, is so applied that when the handle is in its normal position it is wound asuitable number of times about the drumf in such a manner that whenthe handle d is thrown down- Vward it will be wound upon the drum e5, and
will cause the wheel E to revolve in the direction indicated by the arrow. The cord d, however,- is so applied to the pulleys f2 and e6 that the same movement of the handle d and wheel'E will cause the cord to be wound upon the pulley f2 and unwound from the pulley e. When, however, the handle dis moved upward, the direction of movement of the wheel E will be reversed, and likewise the cord e3 will be wound upon the pulley f and the cord e* will be wound upon the pulley e6.
For the purpose of relieving the cords from any sudden tension which might be sufficient 'to break them, suitable spiral or coil springs,

The arm k, however, is secured to an extension, K, ofthe upright B by means of a setscreW, k2, and nut k, extending through the slot k, formed in the extension K. By means ofthis set-screw and nut therest may be ad;- justed not only toward and away from the front of the machine, but its vertical position may also be adjusted by turning the arm k upon the bolt or screw kz as a center. The handle d is also preferably adjustable in alike manner in the arm or crank D.
I claim as my invention 1. In an exercising-machine, the combina'- tion, substantially as hereinbefore set forth,

of a crank, an axis upon which said crank is carried, a handle for turning said crank upon its axis, with a balance-wheel, two cordsror bands winding upon'` the respective axes in opposite directions, whereby said balance' wheel is turned in'one direction or the other y accordingly as said crank ismoved in one direction or ,the opposite, an adjustable support or rest, an arm carrying the same, a support for saidarms, and means, substantially such as described, for securing said arm to said su pport in any required position.A
5. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, with the arm D, the handle d, thewheel E, and the'connections between the same, 'substantially such as described, of the rest k, the arm k', the extension K, having the slot k, and the set-screw and nut forA uniting the last-named arm with said extension.
