UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN WOOD, OF OONSHOHOOKEN, PENNSYLVANIA.
ADJUSTING DEVICE FOR ROLLING-MILLS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Wool), residing in Conshohocken, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Adjusting Device for the Rolls of Rolling-Mills, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is the accurate and convenient adjustment of rolls used for rolling sheet, plate, and bar iron, such adjustment being required in order to keep the rolls parallel, so as to draw the sheets or plates straight and of the same length at each edge. The usual method of adjustment is either to alter the gearing which works the screw or to insert liners under the point of the screw; but these methods involve a loss of time and are not wholly reliable.
My invention consists in a wedge operated by a screw, and fitted between the breaker and bolster at one end of the top roll, whereby the adjustment of the roll to the lowerone can be accomplished readily, accurately, and without loss of time.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a front elevation, partly in section, of one end of a rolling mill with the improvement. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bolster and breaker with the adjusting wedge and screw, and Fig. 3 is a front View of the same parts.
The mill with housings A, rolls B B, bolster G, brass D, breaker E, and screw F is of ordinary character, and the screw F is geared, as usual, to the shaft G, by which the screws at the two ends of the rolls are simultaneously operated for setting the rolls.
In a mortise formed in the top of bolster G is a flat wedge, H, on which the breaker E rests, and to the outer end of this wedge a screw, I, is connected by a collar set in a slot in the wedge. The screw is carried by an arch, K, that is attached firmly to the bolster, and the screw is provided with a hand-wheel.
By turning the screw, and thus moving the wedge in or out, the top roll is forced down at that end or allowed to rise, and in that manner adjusted with reference to the lower roll, so that its ends are kept exactly the same distance from the ends of the lower roll, and the sheet or plate will be drawn straight and of the same thickness at both edges. This adjustment can be made instantaneously and while a plate is passing through without stopping the machine.
This adjusting device can be readily applied to any set of rolls by grooving the b01- ster.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The adjusting device for the rolls of rollingmills, comprising the wedge applied between the bolster and breaker of the housing, the screw with one end fitted to revolve in said wedge, and having a hand-wheel at its other end, and the yoke or bracket secured to the bolster and having a screw-threaded connection with the screw, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
