Be it known that I, PETER NEFF, of (lam bier, in the county of Knox and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improve'- ments in Apparatus for the Manufacture of Carboullack; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip? tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which it pertains to make and use the same. 1
My invention relates to apparatus for the manufacture of carbon-black or lamp-black, in which a revolving collector, the bottom. of which serves as a depositing-surface for the car- I 5 bonblack,is mounted on ahollow uprightshaft that is provided with lateral openings below the table, and serves as a ventilator to carry off such gases and products of combustion as are not utilized in the manufacture of the carbon-black. My invention also relates to the details of construction hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is an elevation,partly in section,of 'an apparatus embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation in section of a plate and arm forming a portion of the table. Fig. 3 is a view in per* spective of the plate shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a View in perspective of a portion of one of-the depending rims, showing the elongated holes by means of which the rims are moved adj ustably vertically.
A represents an upright hollow shaft of considerable size, that is open at the top and has several lateral openingaa and c,located belowT the table. By means 0f these lateral openings the hollow shaft serves as a Ventilating-chimI ney to carry off the products of combustion that have not been utilized. Near the upper end the shaft is journaled in the boX A', that is secured to the framework of the building or otherwise. Below, the shaft is provided with a stepping constructed as follows: B is the base or bed plate, with a vertical cylindrical chamber, B', somewhat larger in diameter than the lower end of the shaft A. At the bottom of this chamber is located a steel disk, b, the upper face of which is concaved to lit a portion of the ball C. A similar disk, a', is inverted and fits the end of the shaft, and be- 5o tween these two disks operates the ball O. By
this arrangement of the disks and intervening ball the bottom of the shaft is held laterally, and may revolve without contact with the plate B; but the latter would support the shaft as against lateral displacement in case the shaft from any cause should be subjected to a heavy lateral pressure. Also, by means of the disks and ball aforesaid,the shaft and load may be revolved almost frictionless..

d', is provided with a driving-pulley or any suitable mechanism for transmitting power. As the shaft A should revolve slowly, the 6 5 worm-gearing furnishes a convenient means of reducing the speed from that of ordinary shift ing to the required movement of the said shaft A.

To the iiange E' of the collar E are secured the radial arms G, that support the plates I-l'.
The form of these arms in cross section is shown in Fig. 2, as are also the iianges h of the plates H, that rest on the flanges of the arms, 8o so that the lower surfaces ofthe plates and arms are inline and form a flat surface. rllhe arms G are provided with ears g, for attaching the brace-rodsI, that extend through the yoke J and have jam-nuts t' on either side of the yoke, 85 as shown. The yoke J embraces the shaft A, and is held in place vertically by the collar J', thatV is usually secured to the shaft A with setserews.
Around the periphery of the table and flange 9o E are respectively the depending bands Kand K. The holes in these bands through which pass the bolts k, that secure the bands, are elongated in a vertical direction, so that these bands may be adjusted to depend the required distance below the surface of the table, by means of which is regulated the depth of heated air and gases that forni a cushion for the gas-j et that impinges the table.
Through the-flange E are openings e, and roo surrounding these openings above the flange is located a chimney, L, usually of sheet metal, and is extended upward more or less, according to the draft that is desired to carry off the 5 surplus gases from under the table.
Through the plates H are small openings h', distributed over the table so that an opening is had for about every four square feet of tablesurface. These openings give a slight circulation to the gas-cushion aforesaid.
A series of burners is arranged in the usual manner below the table in such position that the iiames impinge the table,and scrapers are arranged to remove the deposit; but as these devices are common to all of these classes of apparatus and are in common use, it is not considered necessary to describe or illustrate Openings are also had through the collar E to. correspond with the openings a in the hollow shaft. At any convenient point in the hollow shaft, usually near the top, some suitable damping mechanism is had to regulate and control the ventilation through the shaft. Almost any ordinary damper can be made to answer the purpose, and as such devices are common they are omitted in the drawings.
What I claim is- 1. In apparatus for the manufacture of carbon-black, a revolving black-collector mounted on a hollow shaft,the1atter provided below the collector with lateral openings and ar- Y ranged to operate as a yentilating chimney or iiue, substantially as set forth.
2. In apparatus for the manufacture of car- 3 5 bon-black, a hollow upright shaft with lateral openings provided with worm-gears for revolving the shaft and load and a black-col lector mounted on the shaft, a flanged collar embracing the shaft to support the center 4o of the collector, a yoke or equivalent device embracing the shaft, and brace-rods attached to support the outer portion of the collector, the said yoke and iianged collar made adjustable vertically on the shaft, substantially as set forth.
3. In apparatus for the manufacture of carbon-black, the combination, with the shaft A and concaved disk a', of the bed-plate B, the disk b, and the ball C, substantially as set 5o forth.
